APPRENTICESHIPS

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?

Apprenticeships are industry specific and designed to develop appropriate skills from junior to management level. They are available to employers of any size.

They combine theory and practice using assessments in the workplace alongside assignments and exams at College.

The apprenticeship frameworks will include a Diploma or NVQ as well as English, maths, ICT* and may also include a Technical Certificate.

Apprenticeships are available at different levels. The Apprenticeship levels offered at the Hugh Baird Business Development Centre are:

Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2)

Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3)

*not included in all frameworks

WHY RECRUIT AN APPRENTICE?

Apprentices are young people and adults who show great motivation and determination to learn and progress in their chosen field.

An apprentice is an extremely cost effective solution for any business wanting to develop.

Apprenticeships are designed to provide the skills required to improve business efficiency and competitiveness.

It is also possible to train existing staff by offering them the opportunity to progress onto an apprenticeship.

HOW TO RECRUIT AN APPRENTICE

The Customer Relationship Team is dedicated to helping you recruit the apprentice you need. We will advertise your vacancy free of charge on the National Apprenticeship Service website and also across all students at Hugh Baird College. Our access to a list of full-time college students means that many candidates will already have achieved some relevant qualifications.

Once we receive applications, we will shortlist candidates who meet your requirements and arrange interviews for youto make your selection as easy as possible.

The Customer Relationship Team will also make all necessary arrangements for the delivery of the qualification.

Once you have selected your apprentice, an assessor will be assigned. The assessor will also support and guide you and the apprentice and ensure you are both meeting national quality standards that are integrated into the programme.

WHAT OUR EMPLOYERS SAY ABOUTAPPRENTICESHIPS AND THEIRAPPRENTICES

MAUREEN WALKER-MILLER

Settings Manager, Tweenie Tots 2, Litherland

“I’m a firm believer that we have to investin developing a quality workforce for thefuture. Apprentices are the ideal way todo that because we are able to ensurethat they’re trained to our own highstandards. I have already employed twoof my former apprentices. In the past, Ihave had trouble recruiting high qualitystaff but by taking on an apprentice, I canmake sure that by the time they achievetheir qualification, they are fully prepared for the workplace. Asan employer, I feel it’s up to us to give our young people thehighest standard of training we can so that we build a qualityworkforce for the future.”

SHIRLEY HEATON

Salon Owner, Exclusive Hair Design, Maghull

“I’ve always had apprentices and I’m afirm believer in investing in them. I feel it’sdefinitely a two-way commitment. If theyinvest their time and do well, I’m happy toinvest in them for a third year to help thembecome competent and confidenthairdressers. All of my apprentices attendHugh Baird College one day a week tostudy towards their qualifications and, over the years, I’ve established anexcellent working relationship with the college.”
