Crisp winter in warm Bodent h e s m e l l , t h e s o u n d a n d t h e f e e l i ng of winter will go straight to your heart when you greet Boden for the very first time. The cold lightly nipping your cheeks, your eyes watering from the wind as the dogsled rushes through the snow covered forest, the sound of your footsteps creaking against the white, soft and beautiful snow. Whilst you’re here, take the opportunity to collect as

many snow-white winter memories as you can, they will last a long, long time.

When you go exploring in this little town of ours, you will notice that everything is close: cafés, restaurants, people and experiences. Discover the exciting military history and what still remains of it all over Boden. Breathe the crisp air, experience the smell of snow. When your feet are cold and you’re starting to feel peckish, venture inside for a snack, a Swedish “fika”, like a cup of smoking hot chocolate and a freshly baked cinnamon bun. Have a tasty meal cooked using local ingredients. The outdoors is close by too. As a matter of fact,

Boden is surrounded by nature. The forests and the rugged landscape surrounding our two river valleys become a natural playground which we visit all winter. You are invited to come out and play as well.

Discover the fantastic feeling of travelling on untracked ground, between snow covered trees. Choose between gliding silently at your own pace, on cross-country skis or getting up on a snow- mobile and going full throttle. If you pay attention, you will find wild animal tracks and if you’re really lucky, you might spot the King of the Woods – the moose – between the trees. If you’re still full of

energy after a day outdoors and would like some-thing a bit warmer, visit the Nordpoolen aqualand with tropical temperatures and lots of fun.

If you would like to experience local culture, you mustn’t miss the regional art gallery Havre-magasinet, featuring both international and local artists. We who live here love the crisp winter, the cold and most of all, the snow. You will find us on the ski slopes, on the frozen river or riding along the snowmobile trails. You are welcome to share our everyday life, we guarantee rosy red winter cheeks.

From the top of Storklinten, the chances are that you will be treated to Boden’s best

view of the snowy-white forest landscape.

m a k e yo u r c h i l d h o o d d r e a m s come true, experience freedom high up in the treetops, in your very own nest. The experience is magical, seeing the forest from above, from within the canopy, becoming at one with the whispering wind, sharing the secrets of the forest. What began as an experiment in the Harads forests, offering accommodation in a homemade treehouse, resulted in this brilliant idea, accommodation in designer tree hotel rooms.

At the Treehotel, well-renowned architects have been given full artistic free-dom to create innovative and aesthetically perfect hideaways where you can relax and just be. Here, you will find a contrast to everything that defines life in the city: tranquillity, quiet, plenty of room, clean air and natural experiences. Just walking through the woods is an adventure in itself. Take the opportunity to experience the scent of the forest, the fresh winter wind and the feeling of being a small part of something greater.

You mustn’t miss the cosy, homely atmosphere at Brittas Pensionat (Britta’s Guesthouse) right next door to the Treehotel. Imagine opening the door and walking in to the smell of home cooked food, made using local ingredients, pot-boiled coffee and freshly made bread. Ah, it’s great just to be here.

YOUR OWN NEST

amongst the treetops

RELAXING WARMTHA steamy bath provides much needed relax-ation after a long day out in the fresh winter air. At Treehotel there are two saunas with beautiful views of the river and forest. The smaller tree sauna has room for 8 people, and adjecent to this, there is also the opportunity to enjoy the warm, steamy hot tub under the stars. If you are a bigger group, the large sauna is a perfect alternative. At Britta’s Guesthouse you will find the cozy relaxation area in the old-fashioned environment with whirlpool, classic bath and sauna. One tip is to book an entire evening at the Guesthouse with relaxation area in combination with pizza baking in the wood-fired oven. In the future there are also plans for the construction of a cold bath house in the middle of the Lule River close by.

ZIP THROUGH THE TREE-TOPSExperience the feeling of flying! Hanging in a harness you are swishing among the treetops in the beautiful nature of Harads. Zip-line promises an adrenaline filled ride with speeds up to 50 km/h, 8–10 metres above ground over 6 plat-forms where the longest distance is 125 m. Of course with Treehotel’s experi-enced guides that take you through the experience step by step.

TASTY FOOD IN VINTAGE SETTINGMidst of the northern forest with views of the Lule River, you will find Britta’s Guest-house. Here you are welcomed in a homely environment where the decor has been selected from the 30 to the 50-century Sweden. The atmosphere breathes warmth and coziness and you can feel like home but without everyday stress. In the restaurant they serve delicacies from Swedish Lapland and Swedish comfort food. The menu changes seasonally to keep the ingredients to top quality. Nearly all ingredients are local and as far as possible, organically grown. The staff will gladly help you if you would like to tailor your own menu.

t h e ro l l i ng fo r e st l a n d s c a p e that surrounds Boden is a blessing. Here, in the proud, tall coniferous forest, peace and tranquillity reigns. Drift away in fantasy, let the tree trunks become pillars – and go exploring this snowy white cathedral, made for adventure. The best thing is that the forest is easily accessible, also with activities for the disabled.

See how the light shifts between the trees and makes them glow as the sun finds its way all the way down to the snow cover that we’re walking on. Here, under the snow-covered trees, our sounds are muffled as we look for animal tracks – it’s really quite exciting to guess who walked here just before us. The most exciting thing of all is sitting in complete silence together with Mikael Suorra of Hide and See, in his bear hide, looking for a newly awakened teddy. You could also join a truly skilled guide for a small game hunt in the winter forest.

In the evening, darkness lays its soft cloak over the forest and we get to experience the magical polar light, shining on the horizon. Yes, night is far from black. The Northern Lights dancing in the sky shift from green to violet and reflect upon the white snow. The glistening, starry sky and the full moon, lights the world in silver. It’s difficult to get enough. So, hurry up and get here – we can’t wait to show you all this and more.

BECOME AT ONE WITH THE FOREST

Our winter cathedral

After a long day outdoors, few things are as relaxing as a hot sauna, here at Sörbyn Lodge.

NORTHERN LIGHTS – AURORA BOREALIS Capture the light in the darkness. You will always remember your first Aurora. When solar flare hurls huge amounts of particles into space and when those particles reach the earth’s magnetic field, they are led into a circle around the North Pole and comes in contact with the upper atmosphere. This forms a light in different colours and the solar winds control the Northern Lights spectacular show. It can be a challenge to perpetuate the beautiful Aurora. The camera captures the light better than your own eyes and with Pure Lapland’s photo guide, you can learn to photograph Northern Lights when it is dancing in the sky above you in the arctic winter night.www.pure-lapland.com

ENJOY THE SILENCEIce fishing is a big part of our culture, both for relaxation and a way to catch the evening dinner. Ice fishing through the thick ice after the beautiful char on the cold source lake, Vitträsket, so still and quiet that you can almost hear the fish. With something isolating to sit on and coffee in a thermos, a beautiful winter day on the lake is promised. When your cheeks get red and the toes are freezing you can seek comfort inside with its warmth close to the crackling fire and enjoy a delicious dinner at Restaurant Kallkällan.

Create new snowy tracksExperience the vast winter landscape. Along with CreActive Adventure you can move through the snow-heavy woodland with snowshoes or touring skis. With a little luck you can discover animal tracks for example of reindeer, weasel, fox, hare and the king of the forest, the moose. Seated comfort-ably in a sled behind a snowmobile you have a good starting point to look out for this majestic animal on a Moose safari. End the tour with a warm fire and a nice sandwich. With the sandwich it will taste good with a nice cup of hot coffee. Genuine Swedish boiled coffee is prepared over an open fire in a “sotpanna”, a kind of coffee pot, and of course the coffee is served in a “kosa”, the traditional mug.www.creactive-adventure.se

sto r k l i n t e n ’ s s u r ro u n d i ng s are reminiscent of a fantasy landscape – rolling, forest-clad moun-tains and valleys swathed in pure, white snow. It is the snow that makes the winter more fun than anything else, as you rush down the well-prepared slopes of Storklinten. There are a wide variety of options for the entire family – from beginners to more advanced skiers. The backside of the mountain offers challenges for the off-piste enthusiast. The terrain is also ideal for cross-country skiing. Follow the trail around the mountain that will take you through the wonderful environment of the Eco-park that surrounds the facility.

For those of you who would like to improve your technique, skilled instructors are happy to share their knowledge. If you don’t feel like packing your own skis, you can rent equipment

on location. We recommend rounding off your day together with other skiers at the après-ski in the restaurant, featuring troubadour music and high-quality food based on local ingredients.

The accommodation at Storklinten is of a high standard, spacious cottages with room for several families, cosy, personal and with all kinds of conveniences. They are perfect for lying back and enjoying yourselves after long, pleasant days out-doors. Some cottages have their own saunas and all have a great view of the slopes and the majestic forest landscape. You can sit here for a long time, just enjoying the tranquillity.

The best thing about Storklinten, however, is the total skiing experience, so surprisingly close to the coastal cities. Hurry up and come here this winter!

Well-groomed runs and child-friendly slopesFor those who want to go skiing, Storklinten offers well prepared slopes. For the glider and the curious there are long varied loops, and the adventurous can enjoy the resort’s funpark, Parkatjakka or try the off piste, on the backside of the mountain. Those who are experiencing shaky legs or are a bit insecure can join the Flying Fox Gunnard’s ski school for the younger ones. No experience is required from the skier and for those who do not have their own equipment, all necessaries are available at Storklinten’s ski rental. When the small children are ready to hit the slope, they can easily go up to the top with the kids ski-track. End the lovely day of skiing with some live music at the After Ski, where the kids’ favorite Gunnard comes to dance and play with the children.

FUEL UP WITH TASTY FOODWhen your stomach starts to rumble and the body needs to be refueled, food is always close by. Bring your own and barbeque at one of the barbeque places in the area or step into the warmth at Restaurant Storklinten. In the newly renovated restaurant you will find a popular buffet with varied cuisines and a children’s menu during daytime. Some evenings Storklinten invites you to join special events and festivities with menus in different themes, other evenings you can order from the á la carte menu. Anyone celebrating a birthday? Host a children’s party with winter games, cake and the Flying Fox Gunnard! The cozy restaurant is also an ideal place to have a party with nice accommodation adjecent.

Get close to the elements and experience the tranquility on a beautiful walk in the woods. The area surrounding Storklinten offers many different activities. Here you will find a hilly terrain, ancient forests and closeness to lakes and rivers. Around the mountain run a cross-country ski track of 8.5 km and a shorter ski track of 2.4 km in flat terrain with

For those of you who want to sit and capture the nature with a cup of hot coffee in one hand and a jigging rod in the other, you can try out ice fishing on Lake Lapptjärn. Here you fish for the beautiful char. For a nice and quiet stroll in the forests, snowshoes are a good option. These allow you to walk easily in the heavy snow.

t h o s e o f yo u w h o l i k e s p e e d and action have lots to explore when you visit Boden. Especially if you want most activities to focus on nature and the outdoors. Why not challenge yourself and your company to try as many different ways of getting around the snow-covered landscape as possible?

Snowmobiling is a given thing for all of us who live here. You must try it too. The feeling of free-dom, covering long distances of white, untouched ground, is delightful. You will love the wind on your cheeks and the closeness to nature as you get to know the powerful vehicle. Maybe going along Malmens Väg (The Ore Trail) or looking for pack ice in the archipelago.

Dogsledding could be described as a work of art, a fascinating interplay between man and dog, with a language of its own. The sense of speed is second to none as the sled floats, silently between the

Nature in the limelighttrees or out on the ice, close to the snow, dusting up from the paws and landing on your glowing cheeks. It’s an experience that you want never to end. The Treehotel offers an exciting expedition tour where you get the chance to drive your own dogsled and stay overnight in a cosy forest cottage. Or you could opt for an Isdimma Husky Adventure in Sörbyn, with only purebred Siberian Huskies pulling the sleds, to live the dream of a wilderness adventure. Laplandhusky is yet another option, offering unique dogsled tours in the winter forest.

There are of course plenty of pleasant indoor activities as well. The tropical setting of the Nord-poolen aqualand offers a nice contrast to the arctic surroundings. Each action-packed day can best be rounded off in a steaming hot sauna. You’re ready to throw yourself headlong into adventure now, aren’t you?

GET TO KNOW OUR CANINE FRIENDSAlaskan Husky is the breed that is bred to be a good sled dog. Actually it is not a breed of dog, in fact it is a crossbreed, usually with Siberian Husky in the intersection and very often a bird dog breed. The look of an Alaskan does not matter, the only thing that matters is the ability. While a Siberian Husky, sometimes called ”Real Husky”, is a pure breed that is used for its capacity, they can run longer distances. They also have a nice psyche which is often calm and stable. The appearance of these two breeds differs. A Siberian Husky usually has thick fur with a bushy tail and often the characteristic blue eyes. In another word, a real beauty. What is common for both is the incredibly cheerful willingness to run and pull a sled.

Defrost in tropical heatAfter long days of adventures in the winter landscape it can be wonderful to get a feel of the tropical warmth offered at Nord-poolen. This indoor aqualand offers a world of boundless bathing adventures. Here it is always tropical climate, regardless of the season and much to do for both adults and children. Fast water slides and a wild rapid river brings out your inner child. And you can wind down afterwards in comfortable saunas and whirlpools.

JOIN AN EXPEDITIONDo as the locals and try to drive a snowmobile. The freedom and the closeness to nature are amazing. The old transport route for iron ore, Malmens Väg, offers many opportunities for the snowmobile trip and take you all the way from the coast in the east to the mountain area in the west. If you join CreActive Adventure guide expedition to the Arctic Circle you drive through the woodlands of Råne River Valley and cross the latitude in the great wilderness. Another exciting tour by snowmobile takes you to the outer parts of the Luleå archipelago in the Bay of Bothnia. If the weather permits you try to reach the drifting ice, which with its spectacular view reminiscent of Arctic. The cultural soul

We go backwards in time to find the images, the words that describe Boden today. It is the story of a fortress that was built on five high mountains that together shaped an important, guarding ring around the city. A fortress, which was without comparison in the Nordics; the Boden Fortress, also known as the “Lock of the North”.

Boden became a place whose population was heavily increased by people from all over Sweden, working in the military or at the garrison hospital, however, up until 1997, Boden remained a very closed and secretive place to outsiders. This mix-ture of people became the breeding ground of the city’s cultural life as it is today; art, music, revue and theatre, film and not least the literary heritage of the proletarian author Eyvind Johnson.

In present time you can visit Havremagasinet,

a regional art gallery featuring exhibitions not only of an international standard, but also local art from the Boden School. Close to the library, you will also find the art gallery of the local Arts Society. The local music scene spans everything from rock to classical choral arrangements and is active all year round in several venues. In the cosy darkness of the award winning Saga movie theatre, many people have been introduced to the world of film.

Today, Boden is an open place, an warm meeting place for all the cultures of the world. The barbed wire has been torn down and the five high moun-tains are now popular vantage points. You are welcome here to explore the exciting cultural life in Boden – a dynamic meeting between then and now. We look forward to showing you the way./Cecilia Mörck, Cultural Developer, Boden Council

“We will soon be in Boden. First, the long bridge over the Luleå River at Trångfors. I feel the bridge echoing of an early winter’s day. I sense some-thing of the river, thundering below and narrow ice edges that have not yet stretched across. The sensation of going back, somehow backwards in time, exists, fleetingly, in the exact sensation of entering something quite new.”

Excerpt from “Vinterresa i Norrbotten” (A Winter Journey in Norrbotten) by Eyvind Johnson, winner of the 1974 Nobel Prize in Literature, born in Boden.

THE GLORIASTwo years ago the pop-band from Boden, The Glorias, released their debut album. An album that quickly climbed the charts. Nowadays the band consists of Jill Holmgren, Emma Larsson and Signe Lindahl, and this fall they have released a new single, Teenage Heartbreak. With the safety of having BD Pop and Up Sweden holding their back, the band launches a new single and video and then sets off on a tour in Sweden. Boden is always in the heart of the members and even if it involves a lot of traveling they have chosen to stay in their hometown. Here they can develop at their own pace and they have their inspiration just around the corner.

Havremagasinet – Regional Art GalleryThe impressive building Havremagasinet is one of Boden’s largest buildings, a house with a total area of 3,600 m2, spread over six floors. This listed building is today over 100 years and used to store horse feed, oat, to the horses at the Swedish Armed Forces. Nowadays, Havremagasinet houses one of the largest art halls in Sweden and shows exhibitions of contemporary art dealing with topical international themes. Here you can also attend lectures and workshops, and the cozy café invites now and then to music nights and other cultural events.www.english.havremagasinet.se

Local ingredientsMAKE DELICIOUS MEALS

g e t to k now t h e v e ry h e a rt of our character through the regional culinary culture: the taste of Swedish Lapland. For thousands of years, our forefathers learned to handle the generous gifts of nature – the wild meat from elk, reindeer and hare with its characteristic taste of wilderness, the game fish from our clean waters and the sweet, sour berries, vegetables and herbs from our rich ground.

To all this, we must of course add pot-boiled coffee, strong and black that warms and rejuvenates us, it is best made over an open fire in a soot-black pot. The Swedish fika culture is intimately connected to the coffee culture and we like dunking sweet cookies of all kinds, or even a cinnamon bun,

in our coffee. A perfect energy boost as we pause between activities.

That’s how our food works: it’s part of our culture, part of us and a natural part of your experience. Regional restaurants hand-pick selected ingredients that are prepared with skill and great care. At the Kallkällan Restaurant in Sörbyn, for example. If you choose to go fishing or hunting during your stay here, they are happy to prepare your catch for you, to complete your experience and make your day even better. Being able to trace every ingredient on your plate is an amazing privilege. It can hardly get more locally produced than this. Welcome to the table!

At the Kallkällan Restaurant, there is a strong focus on high-quality ingredients

RUTER RETRO CAFÉIt always suits nicely with a refreshing cup of coffee. In this nostalgic café, it is not just all the tasty home-made pastries you can enjoy, also take the opportuni-ty to look around among all the old stuff. The café is almost a museum and takes you on a journey back to the 50s and 60s. This is also a gem for anyone keen on some vintage shopping.

Country-style shop and CaféAt Vittjärvs Lanthandel & Kafé you will find tasty homemade pastries and good coffee, and a cozy country store with locally produced and organic products. The entire range is well thought out and everything is handpicked. Natural Soaps, wool slippers, marmalades and crafts become perfect gifts along with amounts of goodies such as eco tea, bear sausage, fine chocolates and bark bread.

Game, berries and more at SvantesIs there anything more natural than to eat what comes directly from forests and fields? What is trendy today, has been an integral part of the north-ern food culture since ancient times. Centuries- old traditions of the northern reindeer herding, hunting and fishing ensures fine ingredients with pure flavors. At Svantes Vilt & Bär in scenic Harads outside Boden, you can buy refined delicacies like smoked, dried, cured or fresh meat from reindeer, fish and forest birds from local hunters. The different preparation methods give a superb flavor and make the products sustainable in a natural way.www.svantesvilt.se

w h e n yo u v i s i t us in Boden, we would like you to stay really comfortably. This is why we offer a range of options so that you can find your very own favourite. A fundamental principle is that accommodation goes hand in hand with nature. Yes, because we know just how magical it is to both fall asleep and wake up close to nature, in silence, with a beautiful view to rest your eyes upon.

A bonus for those of you who choose to stay downtown is the ability to ski between the hotel and the well-prepared tracks at the Pagla Stadium. Imagine just gliding along, almost in the middle of town. You can of course do the same when staying surrounded by nature. Why not try walking on the snow, using snowshoes? It is a magical feeling, choosing your own paths across the snow cover, between the trees or out on the ice. Maybe on the lookout for the Northern Lights or the unfathomably starry sky.

We are incredibly proud to offer glamping – glam camping – at the comfort-able Aurora Safari Camp in the Råne River Valley, cosy rooms and cottages at Sörbyn Lodge or designer tree rooms at the Treehotel. They are all experiences in their own right – more than just accommodation. A given option to let you share our everyday lives and become at one with our spectacular, arctic environment.

By the Råne River you will find Aurora Safari Camp, a glamorous camping or “Glamping”, founded and owned by photographer Fredrik Broman. Here you stay in the middle of nowhere, with no artificial light at all to be seen, in four comfortable Lavvu Rooms (Sámi tents) that can be set as double, twin or family rooms. There is a firewood heater in each Lavvu, and even if there are very low temperatures outside, your room is still warm on the inside. Go on a photo safari and develop your photography skills among snow heavy trees and in the evening, if you are lucky, you will be able to catch the northern lights with the camera. Try the tented sauna on a float that is freezed into the ice and at the end of an eventful day enjoy fine dining served in the lounge area by the fireplace. The recommendation is to not have too tight of a program to maximize your stay. The Aurora Safari Camp is a very relaxing but still intense experience just as it is.www. aurorasafaricamp.com

In Swedish Lapland you will find unique arctic experiences. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, here high up by the Arctic Circle, you can experience seasons with great contrasts between polar nights with sparkling northern lights in a white winter landscape and warm summers filled with swimming and hundred days without night under the midnight sun. In the east – a 300-km coastal stretch facing the world’s largest brackish water archipelago, with thousands of islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and unique produce. In the west – vast mountains, brooks with water so clean you can drink from them and lots of adventures around the corner. In between the quiet, enigmatic, open-handed forest and river valleys from Skellefte River in the south to Torne River in the north-east, all with their unique distinctive characteristics to offer. Traditions and cultures are strong here, and love of nature is even stronger. This is our everyday-life, and we invite you to share it with us. www.swedishlapland.com
