The role

The purpose of this role is to provide coordination of the physical health interventions for the young people who attend the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) at Orygen Youth health – Clinical program. This role will be part of a clinical trial, named PHAstER, and the involvement of a Physical Health nurse in the treating team will be the intervention being assessed. This role includes performing physical health screening (metabolic monitoring) and facilitating clients attending the interventions at Orygen Youth Health that have been established to address the physical health of young people, including but not limited to:

Exercise physiologists – individual & group programs

Dieticians - individual & group programs Gym group Yoga group ‘Tackling tobacco’ intervention in conjunction with QUIT Victoria Interventions aimed at reducing and/or ceasing alcohol or substance use Promoting the use of medications that have a low propensity for weight gain

or metabolic disturbances as first line treatments

The Physical Health Nurse Co-ordinator will also liaise with external agencies such as general practitioners, endocrinologists and sexual health services depending on the specific needs of the individual client.

About you

Essential

Experience working with young people with a diagnosis of mental illness

Extensive experience working as a physical health nurse within a multidisciplinary care team in a community setting

A sound understanding of the physical health co morbidities associated with serious mental illness

Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience, in the provision of comprehensive physical health assessment, metabolic monitoring, planning of therapeutic interventions, and evaluation of clinical outcomes

Demonstrated provision of high quality, person-centred evidence-based nursing care in the contemporary community mental health context

Experience in working in clinical leadership roles

Experience working collaboratively with primary health care providers e.g. GP practices

Enhanced knowledge of mental health medications

High level of reliability and professional conduct

Experience in the provision of nursing clinical supervision

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to problem solve, negotiate and communicate with staff, patients and other service providers

Successfully undergo a Police Records and Working with Children’s Check for pre-employment screening

Desirable Nursing: Evidence of current Continuing Professional Development as outlined by

ACMHN or RCNA. Evidence ACMHN Credentialed Mental Health Nurse (CMHN)

A working knowledge of community-based organisations and human services organisations.

Commitment to the development of integrated clinical research within the service

Understanding of the Children & Young Person’s Act, Mental Health Act 1986 and other Acts/ legislation relevant to working with young people in a mental health setting.

Knowledge of relevant guidelines, plans and strategies related to the mental health service system (E.g. Victorian Mental Health Reform Strategy, National Standards for Mental Health Services, etc)
