Winches

The world’s first ratcheting winchsaves time and helps prevent injury.With Ancra’s SilverCap™ Ratcheting Winch, you don’t have to remove thewinch bar until the load is secure. That can save you time while preventingwinch bar slippage or kick-back. Functioning just like a ratchet wrench,the SilverCap is one of those ideas that makes perfect sense, and youwonder why someone didn’t think of it sooner. Like other Ancra wincheswhich are some of the strongest in the industry, these new patented wincheshave a working load limit of 6,000 lbs. and a breaking strength of at least18,000 lbs. unless otherwise indicated. They comply with all DOT andCalifornia CHP regulations, WSTDA-T3 and Canadian Standard 905.

Silver Cap Winches are available in weld-on, sliding or portable mount models and are all powder coated to resist abrasion and rust. Forlongevity, the ratcheting mechanism is permanently sealed againstmoisture and road grime.

Ancra’s Overdrive™ is the easy upgrade for welded-on winches and winches too new to replace. With a ratcheting winch, youwork faster and safer because the winch bar stays in the winchuntil the strap is tight.

To install on any existing winch: 1. Simply slide the OverDrive unit over the cap of the old winch,2. Spin it in place and 3. Secure it with the bolt. It’s that simple. All necessary parts are included.

Our Standard C track (42357) is available in both steel and aluminum and is designed for usewith our standard slider winches (43565-12 and 43565-15). Our newest style (49242-10-120) is our Double L aluminum track and is designed for our49207 Double L slider winch models. Steel track is constructed of roll-formed 1/4" plate steel. Though winches don’t actu-ally come in contact withthe load, their function oftightening and anchoringthe webbing or cable iscritical to the safety of over-the-highway cargo hauling.With their versatility, winchesand straps or cable can

secure nearly every kind and shape of load, and even allow periodictightening of the load as necessary. They operate in all types ofextreme weather and rarely fail. Yet in spite of their importance,winches are often neglected and abused.

To give the winches the care they deserve, a quick inspection before each use will insure they are undamaged and working properly.Damaged or non-operational winches should be replaced immediately.

For optimum performance, winches should be cleaned to remove dirt,mud, road salt, and ice. Lubrication ensures that gravity will allow thewinch pawl to drop freely into the sprocket teeth, and the sprocketwill rotate freely. When not it use, portable winches should becleaned and stored in a dry location. With a little care, your wincheswill go a long way.

Ancra presents GlideLock, an efficient and economical way to meetthe latest Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) stan-dards for fleets operating flatbed trailers with either, trailer rails, double Ltrack or standard C winch track.

As the name implies, it glides into any position along the trailer railor winch track to ensure the correct pull-angle for securing the cargo,while keeping the strap inboard of the rub rails and fastened againstcoming loose as the standard requires. Once in place, it locks the winchstraps in place for safe securement of the load. It works with any standardflat hook strap.

Load Securement Products

GlideLock works in four easy steps.

Length: The distance between extreme end bearing points of the web

tiedown assembly, including the fittings. Standard fixed end length is 18"

(33" for chain anchor straps). This puts ratchet in optimum position on side

of trailer for driver tensioning. Handholds are typically 6" in length and can be sewn to prevent the

webbing from sliding back through the buckle or winch.

Webbing

Webbing will have a longer life if stored in a dry, dark location. Continuous exposure to ultra-violet light can degrade the strength of synthetic webbing.

Webbing Characteristics

Nylon’s elongation characteristics make it suitable for slings and tow straps, but less desirable for heavy-duty tiedowns. It displays good UV,abrasion, alkaline resistance and color fast properties.

Polyester is well suited for webbing because of its low cost, high-strength,and resistance to abrasion. It also withstands acid environments andresists elongation in high-moisture applications. Its durability and abrasionresistance can be increased even further with coatings of latex or othermaterials. Call customer service for specific details and color availability.

General Information

Breaking StrengthThe minimum load a component or assembly will withstand

before failure.

Working Load LimitThe maximum load a component or assembly should be sub-

jected to during routine use. For your safety, Ancra recommends

that “working load capacity” not exceed one-third (1/3) the com-

ponent and/or assembly “breaking strength capacity.”

Rated Load CapacityRatings are generally established and/or regulated by industry

or legislative standards and may vary from industry to industry.

For example, the 1987 California Highway Patrol rating for

flatbed tiedowns is established at 70% of the breaking strength

capacity of web binders or 80% of the breaking strength capac-

ity or force required to cause permanent distortion of compo-

nent hardware, whichever is less.

Note: All strengths referenced in this catalog unless noted, are

based on a straight pull application.

Strength of strap assembly can be doubled when used in a loop

application.

Important Notice:It is the owner’s and user’s responsibility to determine suitability

of a product for any particular use. Check all applicable industry,

trade association, federal, state and local regulations. Read all

operating instructions and warnings carefully.

All ratings shown in this catalog are based on the product

being new, and used in normal environmental conditions.

Special consideration must be given to item selection when

unusual conditions can be expected. Particular caution should

be exercised to avoid exposing the product to sharp edges or

acids.

Products are subject to age, wear, and deterioration, all of

which cause a reduction in the product’s breaking strength

capacity. We recommend that all products be regularly inspected.

Any worn, deformed, misused or overloaded products should

be replaced immediately.

Remember! The component with the lowest breaking strength

capacity in the entire restraint system will probably fail first.

Each component of the entire system plays an important part in

restraining cargo. It is important that tiedowns be attached to

components that are of sufficient strength to properly secure the

load. For example, if one anchors a standard web binder

assembly with a rated load capacity of 12,000 lbs. to a device

with a breaking strength capacity of 5,000 lbs., then that system

will fail at 5,000 lbs.

We believe that those who purchase and use these products

must understand the correct application and strength of the

Ancra products purchased.

WarrantyAll Ancra International LLC products are warranted to be free from defects in material or workmanship fora period of three (3) months from date of shipment. During this period Ancra International LLC will at itsoption repair or replace without charge any products or part thereof found to be defective in material orworkmanship. Ancra has provided the following information as a service to our cus-tomers as well as end-users. This information is intended to promotethe safe and informed sales and use of our products.

SYNTHETIC WEB TIEDOWNS SHALL BE USED IN ACCORDANCEWITH ALL STATE, FEDERAL, PROVINCIAL, LOCAL AND INDUSTRY REGULATIONS, AS APPLICABLE.

U.S. Department of Transportation regulations subchapter B-MotorCarrier Safety Regulations, 49 CFR, Part 393, Paragraph 393.102 (b)requires that : “The aggregate working load limit of the tiedownassemblies used to secure an article against movement in anydirection must be at least 1/2 times the weight of that article.”

It is the responsibility of the user to determine the proper WorkingLoad Limit (WLL) requirement for specific applications. User shallconsult vehicle manufacturer for anchorage strength rating.

An example using this regulation follows:– Determine the number of synthetic web tiedowns required

when using the Working Load Limit (WLL) value marked on the Synthetic web tiedown assembly.

– Weight of article being secured is 24,000 LBS (10,910 KG).– Working Load Limit of the 3 inch synthetic web tiedown is

4,000 LBS (1,820 kg) as marked on the label. – Required Aggregate WLL

1/2 x 24,000 LBS (Article Weight)=12,000 LBS (5,455 KG).

– 12,000 LBS (1/2 x Article Weight)=34,000 LBS (Web Tiedown WLL)

A minimum of 3 synthetic web tiedowns is required to secure anarticle, based only on the weight of the article.

Factors to be considered when determining the number andlocation of synthetic web tiedowns, as specified by state, federal,provincial local and industry regulations are:• Article weight• Configuration of load to be secured (pipe, coil, equipment,

stacking, etc.• Number of tiers• Length of load to be secured• Minimum number of synthetic web tiedowns required• Stakes, blocking and bracing• Tension in the synthetic tiedown shall never exceed the WLL

strength rating of anchorage• Any other factors that may affect safe securement of the load

during normal and emergency conditions

Operating ProceduresThis section provides recommended guidelines for the operation,care (maintenance), use and inspection of synthetic web tiedowns.

Mechanical Considerations• Determine weight of the cargo to be secured, including

expected Dynamic “G” forces.• Select synthetic web tiedowns having suitable characteristics

for the type of load and environment.• Synthetic web tiedown assemblies shall not be loaded in

excess of their Working Load Limit (WLL). Consideration should be given to the angle from the vertical (cargo tiedown to load angle), which affects working load limit capacity.

• Synthetic web tiedown shall be attached to provide control of the load, and positioned in accordance with applicable regulations.

• Synthetic web tiedown assemblies shall not be dragged on thefloor, ground, or over an abrasive surface.

• Synthetic web tiedown shall not be tied in knots, or joined by knotting.

• Synthetic web tiedowns shall not be pulled from under loads if the load is resting on the tiedown.

• Synthetic web tiedowns shall always be protected from being cut by sharp corners, sharp edges, protrusions or abrasive surfaces.

• Synthetic web tiedowns shall not be dropped.• The opening in fittings shall have the required shape and size to

insure that the fitting will sit properly in the vehicle anchorage orother attachments. If the anchorage is inadequate to support the rating of the synthetic web tiedown assembly, then the load rating will be limited to the strength of the anchorage.

• Synthetic web tiedowns shall not be used for lifting. Lifting includes raising, lowering and suspending.

• Before operating any tiedown assembly, the user shall secure his footing to prevent slipping or falling.

• In freezing temperatures caution shall be exercised when operating frozen tiedown assemblies

• A minimum of two (2) wraps of webbings shall be on the winch or ratchet buckle mandrel. Caution: Additional wraps of web-bing on the mandrel will reduce the working load limit of the winch or ratchet buckle.

When tightening or loosening winches, always maintain a firm gripon the winch bar. Never release a winch bar without checking thepawl to ensure that it is fully engaged between ratchet teeth. Releasing a winch bar without the pawl being properly engagedcan cause serious injury to the user or bystanders. The use of aslip resistant handle winch bar specifically designed to tighten orloosen winches is recommended. Only winch bars designed to beused with winches shall be used to tension and release thetiedown.

“Cheater Bars” (“extenders”) shall not be used with the winchbars. User shall stand clear (to one side) of the winch bar handleduring operation of the winch bar in case the winch bar slips. Thetip of the winch bar shall be inserted through both holes in the endcap to prevent the winch bar from “slipping out” and overloadingthe tip and or end cap.

Synthetic web tiedowns shall be used, checked and adjustedduring the transportation of cargo per applicable federal, state,provincial, local and industry regulations.

Environmental ConsiderationsEnvironments in which synthetic web tiedowns are continuouslyexposed to ultra-violet sunlight can effect the strength in varyingdegrees ranging from slight to total degradation.

Out-of-Service Criteria (Replacement)Criteria for placing vehicles out of service at roadside inspections has been established jointly by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and took effectApril 1, 1996. A vehicle will be placed out of service if 25% or more of its tiedowns are loose ormissing, or are defective. Synthetic web tiedowns shall be removed from service if any of the following are visible:

Anchor Point The location to which a tiedown is attached to a vehicle. If the anchor point is inadequateto support the force of the tiedown system, then the load rating of the tiedown will be limited to the strength of the anchor point.

Breaking Strength The tensile load in pounds or kilograms at which any part of the synthetic web tiedown assembly fails.

Bulked Nylon Qualitative term to describe textured nylon yarn

Cargo All articles or material carried by a vehicle, including those used in operation of the vehicle.

Chain Load Binder A binder incorporating an overcenter locking action.

Cross-Docking The movement of goods directly from receiving dock to shipping dock to eliminate storage expense.

Cubic Capacity The carrying capacity of a piece of equipment according to measurement in cubic feet.

Cyclic Test A test to determine the cyclic life or acceptable cyclic rating of a tiedown component or assembly.

Design Factor The ratio of the breaking strength to the Working Load Limit (WLL) assigned to each synthetic web tiedown assembly.

Direct Tiedown A tiedown that is intended to provide direct resistance to potential shift of an article.

Elongation The length of stretch at a specific amount of pull divided by the original length multiplied by 100%.

Fabrication Efficiency The synthetic web tiedown assembly break strength, as a percentage of the webbing strength prior to fabrication.

Heavy Duty Truck Truck with a gross vehicle weight generally in excess of 19,500 pounds (class 6-8). Other minimum weights are used by various laws or government agencies.

Indirect Tiedown A tiedown whose tension is intended to increase the pressure of an article or stack of articles on the deck of the vehicle.

Keeper A device used on a hook to prevent the hook from inadvertently releasing.

Length The distance between extreme end bearing points of the synthetic web tiedown assembly,including the fittings.

Proof Load Test A non-destructive load test of a web tiedown assembly to some multiple of the working load limit of a web tiedown assembly.

Selvage The woven or knitted edge of synthetic webbing, so formed to prevent raveling.

Sew/Stitch Pattern The pattern of the stitches used to sew the webbing together.

Shoring Bar A structural section placed transversely between the walls of a vehicle to prevent cargo from tipping or shifting.

Stuffer A longitudinal load bearing yarn in webbing.

Ultimate (Destructive) Test A straight tensile load test of the synthetic web tiedown assembly tested to failure. The

failure load is the average breaking strength value of minimum of five (5) test samples.

Winch A device for tensioning a webbing or wire rope tiedown that is fitted with means to lock the initial tension.

Working Load Limit This is the maximum combined static and dynamic load in pounds or kilograms that shallbe applied in direct tension to a straight and undamaged tiedown assembly.
