After the previous semester, where issues of form, symbolism through memory, analysis of human behavior through ritual, considering the building envelope via mediation and finally harnessing all in a final project; the second semester raised the bar of architectural progression.

Semester II was a design studio lesson in a host of design initiatives; but chiefly tectonics and sustainability, the manner in which building elements connect and their materiality, fusing in a pleasing architectural gesture. Sustainability meant achieving designs that impacted minimally on their environment and its in-habitants; the ability to sustain themselves as works of architecture.

1d e s i g n c h a r r e t t eCharrette [suh-ret] - a french term that refers to a collaborative and intense period of design activity which a group of designers drafts a solution to a design problem.

The first project of the semester, called for an understanding of tectonics. The charrette required us to design an interactive piece of outdoor furniture; it was an opportunity to create respite for the archi-tecture students

Lecturer: Laurie Ferron Students in group: Stein Carrington, Jheanelle Campbell, Janice Neil, Owayne HamiltonDuration: one weekDate: 18 – 25 January, 2011

Design Charrette as a group project, made us react critically to a design challenge, it was the first exploration in tectonics. We made a conscious effort to examine the materials and their ability to connect in a simple manner.

Page 6: Design Studio 4

d e s i g n c h a r r e t t e

The blue box as we dubbed it, was conceptually de-rived as a portion or extension of the elevator shaft, taken and placed on the ground outside the Archi-tecture school.

The construct was made of PVC pipes filled with sand, stacked to serve as seating. They would be placed in a ply board framed box, which articulated the form of the street furniture. Its positioning and relationship to the school represented a casual means of socializing.

It had to fit the requirements of being made form locally available material, allow for alternate use, be able to be easily constructed, facilitate 3 -7 people and have a maximum size 7m3.

A true lesson in expeditious design.

2s i t e a n a l y s i s - m a s t e r p l a nA site analysis is an inventory of basic data & conditions - physical and otherwise, involving research, examination, and synthesis as it relates to a specific site or location.

The goal of this project was to captured the essence of an on campus site located between the de-partment of languages and the department of business.

Lecturer: David Cuthbert, Allison West-Martin, Michael Stanley, Mlela Matandara, K. Shaw-Hines, Laurie Ferron Students in group: Entire classDuration: one weekDate: 25 January - 01 February, 2011

The site analysis required us to examine the area bounded by the faculty of education & Liber-al Sciences (FELS) to the north, to the east and west by the Utech Printers and Human Resourc-es Department respectively, and by the School of Business Administration to the south.

The importance of the site analysis was to under-stand the human and natural relationships of the space. Also the establishing of genuine traditions and history of site were vital. Observation of the site enabled us to document and subsequently analyses the site conditions. Additionally observ-ing the materials on the site allowed for a more informed design decision.

3m a s t e r p l a nTo develop or improve an area of land via a long-term plan that achieves balance through the fusing of all elements.

The goal is to spark the interest of the plan’s users, where change would be experienced over the short, medium and long-term. The master plan called for a larger scale of design for a public space, without designing specific structures.

Lecturer: David Cuthbert, Allison West-Martin, Michael Stanley, Mlela Matandara, K. Shaw-Hines, Laurie Ferron Students in group: Stein Carrington, Jheanelle Campbell, Janice Neil, Owayne HamiltonDuration: one weekDate: 01 February - 08 February, 2011

Views of the proposed design

The process of design called for a group effort, given the scale of the area, various zones were able to be achieved. Areas of study and eat, movement and pause and respite were created. The overall design was comprised of a host of ar-chitectural elements, pathways, ramps and plat-forms helped to delineated the spaces.

Homogeneity of materials was used with the ap-plication of perforated metal, as seating, and screening elements.

Beyond the specifics of design an effort was made to preserve the existing trees and add to the flora, to create an environment, that would be pleasing and evoke the spirit of the space.

Specifically the respite and study areas cre-ated ideal spaces to develop focal elements, via the water feature and the Chinese bam-boo inspired barrier.

The project called for an exploration of tectonics, how and why we use building materials and the manner in which they connect. The issues of form, balance and proportion, helped to evoke a structure where the limits of the materials were appreciated.

Some of the criteria for the work of architecture was it could not have any load bearing walls, a controlling grid of one metre intervals was used, a maximum of four loading points to the ground, a maximum of 4m from the ground and a maximum floor area of 12m2. governed the design.

The site analysis was a visit to rural area of Maryland, St. Andrew, Jamaica. The genius of the rural site was to be captured, through observation and documentation.

Bridge made of bamboo and high tension wires

The intervention, inspired by the works of artist and sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, was titled ‘Fallen leaves of tone’. it was an intervention that described the sea-son and essence of the site.

Additionally the project required the design of a bridge that would recycle or use the materials that existed on the site. The bridge proposed was to be eas-ily constructed.

The site analysis separated the river course into 3 sites of 50 meters long and 30 meters wide, attempting to capture the cascading element of a river course and the valley that the cross section depicts. The data col-lected was vast and made for a thor-ough investigation of the site, when it was put together.

6r u r a l - s h e l t e rThe shelter reintroduced tectonics in a more comprehensive manner. Tectonic [tek-ton-ik] - originally in Greek to mean the art of knowing how to build, it has come to mean the technical, physical and intel-lectual expression through construction.

The design would require the development of a work of architecture that fuses thorough detailed con-nections , that would achieved appropriate scale, meaning and shape.

The shelter began as an idea of recy-cling the materials that were available on the site, then progressed to design-ing around the notion of the materials, texture and visual they created.

The materials chosen were predomi-nantly timber for structure and gal-vanized corrugated sheet metal for cladding. The structure was anchored to the ground via anchor plates bolt-ed to the timber posts and concrete pad footings.

7p r e c e d e n tPrecedent [pres-i-duhnt] - any act, decision, or case that serves as a guide or justification for subse-quent situations.

The precedent of Fathy House, Sidi Krier, Egypt, by Architect Hassan Fathy served as the guide and in-spiration for the subsequent project. The precedent acts as an opportunity to analyze issues of climate, form, section and plan, symmetry and balance, circulation and hierarchy among others.

exploring form and site section

The Live+ Work project, was an oppurtunity to in-vestigate how the house becomes a dwelling when it is designed to be inhabited by a specific client. For this project I was asked to design a suit-able live + work dwelling for a barber.

Page 34: Design Studio 4

l i v e + w o r k

The design had some criteria it had to fit, the resi-dential space had to be 60m2, the work space had to be 25m2, parking was granted 25m2 and designed green space had to account for 50% of the total 85m2.

The project lessons in understanding sections, this designing in section, was one of the main focuses of the project.

Early exploration was done through the making of models, this continued to the final model it was used to consistently develop form.

The barber as provider needs a simple living space yet a nearby work space that can afford him the conviences he desires. As a designer I chose to re-spect the site and community creating a design that communicated with the flat roofs of the neigh-bourhood, while giving the dwelling strong archi-tectural elements of courtyard and thresholds.

The live space is separate but not aloof from the work, making the overall design pleasing and functional
