WS provides Thermal Analysis and Design of curtain wall and exterior cladding systems, utilizing the current version of LBNL’s THERM and WINDOW software programs. Many Specification Sections require computer simulation of enclosure systems in accordance with NFRC guidelines. WS can prepare thermal computer simulations of designs and products for project applications. Therm Analysis is offered as a comprehensive or standalone service.

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) establishes standards for the simulation and testing of building enclosure products for thermal performance. The Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory (LBNL) wrote and maintains Therm, Window and Optic software for the NFRC. These software programs are used by the building envelope industry to validate their products meet the requirements set forth by the NFRC and building codes

A Therm Simulation is beneficial:• For determining thermal separator materials

and positions within the extrusion assembly• Can be used to verify a system U-Value and cold

spots for condensation potentiality• Beneficial for determining expected product

thermal performance prior to die release, manufacturing & installation

A Project Specific Thermal Simulation:• Can show expected performance and be used

to prepare average wall system conductance and condensation resistance

• Adjacent substrates can be included in the modeling to show suitability and/or deficiency in the Architect’s details.

BLAST ANALYSIS & DESIGN

The protection of people and of structures is vitally important to WS. Whether to prevent an intentional act of devastation or an accidental explosion, it is critical that a member of the design team has specialized expertise in the design and analysis for blast and weapon effects on the curtain wall or facade of the building.

Wheaton Sprague offers the following blast analysis and design capabilities:• Analysis of glass lites utilizing Wingard Software to determine if a particular glass lite meets the specified

response criteria, then determine the ultimate glazing capacity of the glass lite based on specified requirements.

• Balanced design philosophies and designing curtain wall or cladding systems based on that philosophy.• Understanding of ISC Security Design Criteria, UFC 4-010-01, ASTM F-1642-04, and meeting those

standards.• Determination of the acceptability of curtain wall and window framing systems in meeting specified

requirements using Single Degree of Freedom (SDOF) Dynamic Analysis. • Capable of providing curtain wall or facade designs based on SDOF Dynamic Analysis in response to a

specified threat• Analysis of connections of framing members based on specified requirements.• Analysis of anchor conditions based on specified requirements.• Complete calculation packages for glass analysis, vertical mullion design, horizontal mullion design,

framing connection design, and anchor design for window systems and curtain wall systems.

The Department of Design, Drafting and Modeling at Wheaton Sprague provides system design, delegated design, production design and drafting for custom or standard curtain wall systems and other building enclosures. This is done primarily through the expression of proposal, profile, die, shop, fabrication and as-built drawings using CADD and BIM technology, working to achieve the architect’s vision and expression for the curtain wall or enclosure of the building.

WS employs staff members with architecture, engineering, technology and many related backgrounds, who work in integrated teams led by project managers. With this system we achieve a working design for the cladding system or curtain wall that will meet the performance criteria for the building while achieving the aesthetic goals of the architect.

DESIGN, DRAFTING & MODELING

PRE-SALE and POST-SALE SERVICES • Proposal Drawings: When a client is bidding on a job, WS can create a representation of what they are

bidding in order to assist them in obtaining the project. WS facilitates the client’s desire to meet the architect’s design intent, as well as providing coordination with the designer. The deliverable to the client shows the overall profile of the dies.

• Pre-Sale Drawings: WS providets systematic designs for a new custom or a modified existing curtain wall or cladding systems. This can range from a conceptual design to a complete system design package, depending upon the client’s needs and requirements. WS gives clients the ability to present design intent drawings for a design build project, offer a completed system for a particular project, or even to have as an in-house base product system. These services can be provided as part of our client’s proposal submittal package in an effort to secure the project.

• Profile Drawings: Profile Drawings are the next evolution from proposal drawings. With these WS provides solid, realistic and accurate calculations for finished dimensions, die profiles, fasteners, etc. While leaving room for minimal variation and change, the profile drawings are the virtually ‘set in stone’ set of details that the client will use once the job has been awarded. (Profile drawings may also be used during the job bid phase of course)

A BIM (Building Information Modeling) model for a curtain wall or building’s exterior cladding system, is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of that system. The model represents the definitive and authoritative guidelines from which the construction contractors and subcontractors will build with minimal deviation.

The goal of providing a model for the enclosure system of a building is to have design issues and conflicts between facade building components worked out prior to the commencement of construction; in an effort to save time and money at all stages of the construction process. At the heart of our process is an authoritative model from which to extract the data to create a complete, accurate set of construction documents.

Using Revit* architecture software, Wheaton Sprague has the capabilities to provide Building Information Modeling for the Building Envelope.

Benefits of a BIM model prior to construction:

• Safer worksite due to more pre-assembled items coming from offsite.

• Design issues resolved prior to construction• Onsite trade construction at a minimum• Instant changes perpetuate throughout the

drawing package as one feature is revised• Minimized down time due to conflicts

Visit curtainwallbim.blogspot for more topics relating to BIM as it relates to exterior cladding and curtain wall systems.

Wheaton Sprague features the following BIM Services:

• Clash Detection Modeling to meet architect/GC requirements for coordination between trades

• Sales & Marketing Modeling to showcase client’s product as a presentation tool to aid customer in winning projects

• Construction Modeling and Shop Drawings detailed model according to customer’s needs

• Material Take-Offs for use in material orders

COMPANY HISTORY

WS Logo Through The Years

1994: Wheaton & Sprague Engineering, Inc,, also now registered as Wheaton Sprague Building Envelope, was formed by John Wheaton, P.E., LEED AP, and Richard Sprague as a professional services company with technical focus on building facades, building envelopes, and custom and standard curtain wall systems. Beginning in John’s dining room, the two forged their way to a dedicated office space within only a few months.

1995: Small office space at the corner of Portage Trail and Broad Boulevard in Cuyahoga Falls is acquired. More space as granted as more people were added to the fledling firm. Steady and strategic growth ensued throughout the years as Wheaton Sprague’s reputation, expertise and staff grew to accommodate larger projects in building envelope engineering. WS was providing building envelope engineering, engineering for the primary building structure, and forensic investigations.

2008: Having completely outgrown the Cuyahoga Falls office, WS moved to a completely new and expanded space in Stow, OH. Room to move and room to collaborate for the staff. and opportunity for continued growth for the company.

In response to increased client demand for expert knowledge of building envelope systems, and the desire to be a complete building envelope specialty company, WS formed a Building Envelope Consulting Division. Mark Coulis, a highly qualified senior design consultant with a distinguished career in the building envelope consulting field, was appointed as Vice President. The BEC Division advises architects, owners, and related clients on all matters related to curtain wall and other exterior cladding systems and system design, solving complicated design problems and providing workable solutions. The growing BEC Division has expanded to included highly qualified experienced Design Consultants that work out of any of the WS offices for projects and clients around the globe.

2009: In response to the market crash of 2008, it was time to downsize, shore up and get stronger. A committment to complete and total focus on the building envelope ensued.

2010: WS adds a Minnesota branch

2012: WS Minnesota branch moves to an expanded and more accommodating space

Wheaton Building Envelope, PLLC, (WBE), a separate, but affiliated company authorized to do business in the State of North Carolina, was created to provide professional services for North Carolina based clients and North Carolina projects. WBE PLLC is led by North Carolina PE’s, Craig Mertz, and John L. Wheaton.

2013: Cary, NC branch expands and moves to a larger space in Cary.

2015: The addition of Michael K. Smith, RA, RRC, RCI as Design Consultant to the Building Envelope Consulting Division, afforded WS with the opportunity to expand yet again to an office in Cincinnati, OH

Headquarters in Stow, OH is bursting at the seams, so a construction project is underway for a new building across the street from our current location. Presently, with a staff of designers, consultants, engineers, and LEED AP’s, that exceeds 40 professionals, the company is poised for continued growth and expertise with consultants servicing projects and clients in any of the WS Office regions throughout the U.S. and around the globe.

Client testimonies can be a decisive factor when making the choice for which firm to use. Clients want to know that their hard-earned money and their hard-won project is in safe hands. Rather than hearing from us about our capabilities and client care, it’s much more important that you hear from those who have worked with us:

Testimonies about WS Engineering ServicesTestimonies about WS Design, Drafting and Engineering ServicesTestimonies about WS Creating Structure® for our clients

“Given the short time you have had with this job and the fact that this is the first work you have done for us, I would have to rate this as very impressive. Thank you for all your hard work.” - Billy F., Vistawall

“You have been very competitive with your pricing on previous work. Your metal panel and CW shops are certainly first class work.” – Dave V., A-1 Glass

“I really appreciate the detailed approach your team takes on all of our projects.” – L. Rolfes, Celina Glass

“I have reviewed the steel reinforcing that you sent through this morning and I gotta tell you that you’ve done an outstanding job of selecting the reinforcing...!!! 98% of this project utilizes the custom shaped channel that we did a layout for and the other 2% uses our PP-25 steel channel... Both shapes fit inside the different verticals nicely and both shapes miss the shear block fasteners, which makes them easier to apply.

Your approach is greatly appreciated.” - Paul H., OBE“With the work you did do, even though it was small, we were treated with the same level of importance and expedience as, I assume, a larger project would receive. Thank you for help on past projects, & hopeful for future

experiences.” – Emory C., D-M Products, Inc.

“Your firm does a wonderful job attending to the needs of our company. We appreciate all you do! Thank you!” – Charae M., Custom Glass

“Excellent work!! Thanks so much! Just what I needed, and on such short notice.” – Paul B.,
