ELVIS PRESLEY

American singer and actor born on 8 January 1935 in East Tupelo,

Mississippi One of the most significant cultural icons of

the 20th century Central figure in the development of

rockabilly His musical influence came from gospel His flamboyant, custom made outfits of silk

and velour were the beginning of the modern rocker look today.

Elvis set some of today’s classic and coolest rock inspired trends:

Bold and independent style The Elvis hair would always be

slicked back, black, with long sideburns, still remains the ‘look’ for followers of modern rock genres

He began the whole way people dress nowadays to express not only their status, but to truly dress for yourself

brighter colours and sharp, flashy suits, loose, unbuttoned shirts with upturned collars also became fashionable

Elvis’ home in Memphis, now a museum dedicated to himself. Displayed there is his gun collections, study, pool room and of course his legendary wardrobe.

Elvis was the one to start wearing leather in the form of a garment

He introduce the use of leather in jackets and pants and stood out in the crowd

He is also a painter and collector of fine art.

A major figure in the world of popular music for over four decades

Known for his distinctive baritone voice as well as the intellectual depth and eclecticism of his work.

Also recognized for his androgynous beauty, an iconic element to his image David Bowie is an English singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, arranger, and actor.

BOWIE AS AN ICON David Bowie is a style icon today for two

reasons: He was part of a generation that

rebelled. In the late 60s and early 70s, fashion and music came together as a powerful force against convention and sartorial indifference.

Bowie brought a sense of reality to his own dream world while at the same time injecting fantasy into the real world. His music and the clothes he wore were the result of his vision. It turned out to be a vision that many people shared and identified with. That's the definition of an icon. 

INFLUENCE ON FASHION

His main characteristics were the clothes, haircuts and make-up he chose

His most famous look was with platform boots, face paint and tight silhouettes

His sense of style was mainly clean, minimal, monochrome and sleek

Bowie in Berlin was all about black leather and suave suits. He used to be covered with black leather garments from head to toe

 

FREDDIE MERCURY

Freddie Mercury was a British singer, songwriter and producer

Born in the Sultanate of Zanzibar

Grew up there and in India Best known as lead vocalist

and lyricist of the rock band Queen

Was known for his flamboyant stage persona and powerful vocals over a four-octave range

One of the greatest singers in the history of popular music

INFLUENCE ON FASHION One of the most influential men of all

time. Freddie Mercury inspirations can be

found anywhere and everywhere His work was expansive, influence on

fashion undeniable. Wore signature outfits when he

performed. In Queen’s earlier years he wore more

outlandish and glittery costumes. In the latter years Freddie went with a

more relaxed and slick approach.

He was known for infamous yellow leather jacket and garments of leather from head to toe
