TEACHING DESCRIPTIVE WRITING WORKSHOP
Learn research-based writing strategies that increase students’ writing performance from 13 to 86 percent.
Teach interactive lessons that get your students excited about writing. Analyze short videos of different descriptive writing strategies. Use a variety of manipulatives, scaffolds and collaborative writing
exercises that will engage your students. In this interactive workshop, Dr. Schacter will show you how to increase your students’ writing skills by incorporating picture prompts, specific writing goals, model text, and collaborative writing activities. These skills are integrated into planning, organizing, revising, and self and peer evaluation processes that dramatically improve writing performance.
PARTICIPANTS WILL
Combine explicit instruction with modeling and collaborative writing activities to teach descriptive writing effectively.
Incorporate think-alouds and model texts to show students how experts think and revise while they write.
Learn a variety of specific writing skills (e.g., incorporating precise language and strong verbs; making comparisons; using hyperbole; writing topic sentences that engage readers, etc.)
Plan and teach descriptive writing strategies & lessons to colleagues. Use picture prompts, planning, organizing, and editing devices, along
with cooperative learning to motivate and support emergent writers.
This workshop includes
The Master Teacher Series: Descriptive Writing book. A grade level specific CD-ROM with over 300 Teacher PowerPoint
Slides and a student workbook that includes materials for all 33 writing lessons in The Master Teacher Series: Descriptive Writing.
A participant packet with lesson plan templates, collaborative writing activities, and instructional prompts to reinforce the writing strategies and skills taught during the workshop.
