Turner Tattler, 1966 by: Garl Whitson (son)

Sarah Turner, daughter of Elias D. and Mariah Huggins Turner was married to Wes Whitson in 1884. Two

children were born to Wes and Sarah; Garl, who married Sula Anderson in 1907, and Estelle who married

Walter Harris in 1909.

Garl and Sula's children are; Weaver, of Ozark, Harold of Clarksville, Arkansas, and Garl Jr., of California and

16 descendants. Estelle and Walter's children are; D.C., of Mulberry, Arkansas, Raymond of Ozark, Mrs. Ruby

Floys, and Mrs. Edith Yeager, Ozark, and Mrs. Opal Beck, Dixon, California, and 25 descendants.

Wes and Sarah married against the wishes of her father Elias D. who had forbidden young Whitson to come to

the Turner home. But when the love bug bites there is nothing much a parent can do. Sarah's brother Wallace,

aided and abbeted in the elopement.

They met Wes a short distance from the Turner home and went on horse back to the home of a Justice of the

Peace where the ceremony was performed and they were pronounced man and wife. Elias D. finding out what

had happened forgave them and gave them his blessing. The next night the neighborhood gave them an old tim

Charivari. Three weeks later the Justice of the Peace, who had married them, sent word that he had made a

mistake in the ceremony and that they would have to come back and be remarried. They went back and he

performed the second ceremony and again pronounced them man and wife. He got it right this time. On the

night of the second ceremony, the neighborhood gave them their second Charivari that drew the largest crowd

ever in the community.

When Sarah died, Garl and Estelle were very young and their aunt Jeanette Weaver took them into her home

and looked after them for several years until Wes married again.

Wes Whitson was a farmer and a music teacher and song leader of the old school, using his tuning fork to "hist"

the key to the songs.

Letter from Garl Whitson dated Aug 3, 1961, Ozark, Ark to Luna Huggins

Miss Luna Huggins Hot Springs

Dear Luna,

We got your letter yesterday, and were indeed surprised but agreeably so. Sula and I were both sick last week. I

was in Bed about all week with a virus. Sula didn't have it quite so tough as I, but we are better now.

Aunt Jenette was my mother's sister. They were daughters of Elias D. and Mariah Turner. Mariah was Mariah

Huggins before marriage. My mother Sarah died when I was hardly four years old, and aunt Jenette took my

sister and I and took care of us until my father married again. After Uncle Buck died she lived with us until her

death 14 1/2 years later.

The folks in Texas that she used to visit were the John Turners who reared a large family at Honey Grove,

Texas. He was a brother.

Another one, Eli Turner, moved to Mena, Ark. and also had a big family, as did another sister Eliza who

married Dr. E.R. Weaver. I think the three families had about thirty children to adults.

I don't know who John Duncan's parents were, but I know the family was related in some way to the Huggins.

Aunt Harriet McAllister nee Huggins, made her home with him after her husbands death. If I can find out more

about that I will write you later.

Florence is all torn up. She is in a rest home in Ft Smith, and in poor health.

Yours Truly, Garl Whitson

Notes by Virginia McPhail, on copy of letter above:

"Garl's wife was Sula Anderson sister of Florence who married Walker Michell Milton son of William Carrol

Milton and Elza Elvira Bourland.

Turner Tattler 1969: A letter from Garl Whitson to all the Turners

Last October 25, my wife Sula passed to her reward. we had been married 61 years, 4 months. Her death was

not the one I was prepared for. I had been the one to be sick most often, and the one expectd to go first. It didn't

turn out that way. I'm sure it was best that she go first. I can get along better alone than she could have done.

Sula was one of ten children of John and "Clem" Anderson -- all living when we married July 26, 1907. All are

dead now, the last three in just two months. Sula and I didn't get to attend any of the Turner Reunions, but we

were steeped in Turner Lore. Aunt Jennette lived with us for the last 14 years of her life, and believe me, she

was a Turner, and proud of it. Since she passed away I have wished so many times that I had written down so

many things she told about the family.

I suspect that I am one of the few left, who ever slept and ate at the original Turner house, plowed corn in the

Turner fields, or climbed the bushes to gather muscadines from the same vines, or drink from the same spring

that the Turner boys and girls did so many years ago.

I'm well past 82 years old and am living alone -- doing my own cooking and housekeeping. I am starting a big

garden. I am living in Ozark at 604 School Street. I have a son and his wife, their son and family, and their

daughter and family living near by. They look after me pretty closely.

Short Stories from a Pioneer Teacher - Walter Clay Harris - 1964

HISTORY OF NEW ENON PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH IN NORTH FRANKLIN COUNTY

The history of the New Enon Primitive Baptist Church in North Franklin County, Arkansas, and it s

organization includes a history of the people who settled and developed the Mulberry Valley from about where

the present bridge across Mulberry is located on Highway 23, north through Franklin County, up stream to

Beach Grove near the low Water Bridge.

Page 14: Descendants of Isaac WHITSON Everett H. Turner on Descendants of Isaac Whits… · Descendants of Isaac WHITSON Everett H. Turner April 25, 2004 Generation No. 1 1. ISAAC1 WHITSON

The fertile soil, the abundance of fish in the streams and game and fur-bearing animals in the forest, along with

the fIne timber, climate and other natural resources which provided the early settlers with about everything they

used or needed for maintenance, were evidently the reasons some of the first settlements in Franklin County

were made here.

When the population in the community grew sufficiently, they built a house for school and church purposes.

These at first were log houses. Church services were held at various times and places in this valley. Several

denominations established and maintained churches here, but the New Enon Primitive Baptist Church is the

only church in this locality that I know about that has a complete written record of its proceedings from the time

it was organizcd to the pre-sent day.

John W. Anderson, over 80, lived at 805 Gibson Street, Ozark Arkansas, until his death in 1964 W. P.

Anderson, his father, wrote the minutes of the church meetings for a number of years. Elder J. L. (Jimmy)

McClellan, now in his 84th year, lives on Highway 64, In the western limits of Ozark, He also has written

records of the church from the time it was organized to the present time.

Many of the early records were evidently written with goose quill pens and by an accomplished penman. Several

pages are yellowed and dimmed by age, but they furnish a consecutive record of this church and it s activities

for one hundred and fifteen years.

I spent a few hours with Mr. Anderson and Mr. Mc Clellan locking over these records while they commented on

them. My object was to select material for an article I wanted to write about this church for publication. I found

these church minutes would furnish enough Information to write a book. Every few pages, a new story or item

would appear. Mr. Anderson s grandfather, L. Kaner Anderson, and Elias Turner settled near the present Post

Office at Cass at the beginning of the Civil War. Elias Turner owned several hundred acres of land and operated

a in which Mr. Anderson remembers seeing as a small boy.

Tradition here says that Joe Turner brother of Elias Turner, built the first store at Cass, a log building, and that

the Post Office was named after an old settler, John Cass.

The minutes show that the New Enon Primitive Baptist Church was organized the first Sunday in May, 1841, at

a neighbor s house near Cass and that the members who formed the congregation were with-drawing from a

church already in existence in this valley, known as the Mulberry Baptist Church. They also show that Elders

Jobe, Hobbs, Eli Paty, and G. Horner formed themselves into a presbytery and, after some questions were asked,

they were found to be sound in doctrine and practice. Elder G. Horner was the first pastor, and the following

were listed as charter members: George Horner, W. B. James, J. R. Horner, W. A. Hill, Lewis Durning,

Elizabeth Horner, Winey Hill, Poly Turner, Leletha James, Sarah Turner, Mary Hamm, Nancy Durning, G. W.

Durning, William McLaughlin, G. W. Barham, Cliga Horner, Mary McLaughlin, and Elizabeth Jane Turner.

The New Enon Church has changed its location or meeting place three times since it was organized at Cass. It

held its meetings here for more than 40 years, moving to Grassy Flat in about 1885. It next moved to Sulphur

Springs in about 1905 and then to its present location on Highway 23, seven miles north of Ozark, in 1935,

where it constructed a frame building which was completed in 1951 by rocking the outside. It is now known as

the Little Stone Church on Highway 23.

One of the members of this church told me that New Enon Church had never owned it's own home until they

built the little church house now in use, although it was then nearly one hundred years old.

Page 15: Descendants of Isaac WHITSON Everett H. Turner on Descendants of Isaac Whits… · Descendants of Isaac WHITSON Everett H. Turner April 25, 2004 Generation No. 1 1. ISAAC1 WHITSON

The old school, or Primitive Baptist, do not use the title, "Reverend", before their pastor s name. They are

referred to as Elders. The service record of two of Enon's Elders is interesting. Elder W. A. Barham had a

service record of 60 years. He died in 1935. He lived on Mulberry River for several years. Later he moved to his

little farm near Sulphur Springs on Highway 23, now owned by Dan Woolsey, who married one of his

granddaughters. Here Elder Barham reared a largo family. He worked on his farm for a livelihood while he

served his home church as Elder and met his appointments in other parts of the county and sometimes in

neighboring states. It has been said of him that he married more couples and preached more funerals than any

other minister in the county during his services.

His means of transportation for local service was a little pony named Jake. I do not know if horses receive a

future reward for their services here on earth but, if they do, Jake certainly deserves his. Elder Barham was

loved and trusted by all. He was noted for his gentleness, humility and devotion to God. He has gone down in

local history as one of Franklin County s most loved pastors.

Elder J. L. (Jimmy) McClellan came to Franklin County from Kentucky in his early boyhood days. His father,

Hugh McClellan, found employment on the Dave Harris farm and moved his family here. He cleared land and

built the old Spring House on this farm. For his labor, he received mostly provisions, such as meat and meal.

Later he acquired a farm of his own and reared his family. He served a number of years as jailor and deputy

sheriff in Franklin County.

Jimmy took advantage of all the school opportunities he had. These were very limited when he was growing up,

but he made the best of what he had. He became interested in religion and the Bible at an early age. He became

a member of New Enon Church on August 21, 1921. When Elder Barham became superannuated, Jimmy

became presiding Elder in 1921. He is now in his thirty-seventh year of service as pastor. He has proven a

worthy successor to Elder Barham in every way. He is not only loved by his congregation, but is held in high

esteem by all who know him. His devotion to his family, his church and his God is an example of a serene noble

life which is one of the most powerful influences In the world.

Elder Barham's sixty years of service, in one church with one congregation, and Elder McClellan's thirty-seven

years service, in one church, the same church, is certainly something very unusual in any organization anywhere.

Regular communion services are held at this church, annually, the third Sunday in May and October. Foot

washing is part of such services. This feature of communion service, once widely practiced, Is now scarcely a

memory in the minds of many church members today. Churches of this denomination appear to be the only ones

to continue this practice. If this seems to you to be a little singular let me tell you that this church has never

assessed it's members or solicited anyone for funds of any kind for the pastor or the church, The pastors have

supported themselves and their families in other fields of work while serving their church.

Anyone who reads these old church records will find plenty to think, talk or write about. For illustration, you

will find the regular monthly date for meeting is the third Sunday in each month and has been for more than one

hundred years. This regular monthly service has been conducted except for a few years during the Civil War or

occasionally a meeting would be omitted because of illness, bad weather, or similar reasons.

The present membership is about. as large, or larger, than it has ever been. They have a beautiful little church

house, one of the few now left in the rural sections of Franklin County. The present pastor is Elder J. L. (Jimmy)

McClellan. The church clerk is Mrs. Freddy Kenner. The deacons are John W. Anderson, Leon Maxwell, John

L. Young and Curtis Barham.

Page 16: Descendants of Isaac WHITSON Everett H. Turner on Descendants of Isaac Whits… · Descendants of Isaac WHITSON Everett H. Turner April 25, 2004 Generation No. 1 1. ISAAC1 WHITSON

The fact that this little church has survived through the years is evidence of what a few devoted people can do.

This little church will never die. The influence on lives of members and of people who lived in this community

and visited the church will live on endlessly.

The New Enon Baptist is a cherished land mark. This bit of history should never go un-printed. Through the

years, people should be able to read of the little stone Primitive Baptist Church at Enon.
