Depot aligning workforce to declining workload

ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala. – With the completion of the war in Iraq, the need for repairing our military equipment is also declining. Faced with decreasing workload requirements, Anniston Army Depot is not expecting to renew its temporary and term workforce appointments scheduled to expire in fiscal year 2012. Individuals affected may be released based on workload requirements. The first release of temporary and term employees will not occur earlier than March 30, 2012. "Our workload is declining because of the end of operations in Iraq and projected reductions of troops in Afghanistan, ” said Depot Commander Col. Timothy Sullivan. During the last 15 months, the depot has taken several steps to align the workforce with the workload by:

• Implementing a temporary hiring freeze in October 2010; any hiring actions required

beyond this date were approved at the command level.

• Executing Voluntary Early Retirement Authority (VERA)/Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment (VSIP) opportunities; resulted in 292 retirements in FY11 and 12.

• Establishing a Transition Assistance Office, consisting of representatives from the

Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce, the Civilian Personnel Advisory Center, and the depot's Training Office to assist displaced workers.

Sullivan also said that management is going to do everything they can to help make this a smooth transition. "I wish the news was better, but there is no easy way to deliver this type of information."
