The Israel E n d o d o n t i r S o c i e t y , together with the Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine at Tel Aviv University invited Dr. Herbert Schilder to present two courses: "Predictably successful endodontics" and Three-dimensional obturation technique." More than 100 dentists attended the two courses.
Dental services extend beyond office visit It's the last round of the Master's Golf Tournament, the pro lines up his shot, but suddenly he steps back and grabs his jaw. How can he finish this round with the excruciating pain in his tooth? Fortunately for him, as well as the other players and guests, the Medical Emergency Dental Service for the annual Masters Golf Tournament is there to help. Started in 1965, the MEDS has two dentists on call, 24 hours a day, to take care of dental emergencies. The AAE's Manuel Weisman helped to develop this vital service which has treated players such as Sam Snead, patrons of the sport, TV personnel and guests.
Similarly, the Washington State Dental Association will provide emergency dental care for the 1990 Goodwill Games, which will be held in Washington state this summer. AAE President-elect James C. McGraw heads up the Emergency Dental Care Steering Committee for the WSDA which is coordinating the recruitment of staff and supplies. Dr. McGraw said an estimated 45 volunteers will be needed in Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane and Tri-cities. It is expected that over 150 participants may require emergency dental care, based on studies of the Pan Am Games and U.S. Olympics.
EPA to evaluate waste disposal Dentists and other generators of medical waste in Connecticut, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, New York and Rhode Island will be part of a two-year pilot program which will track medical waste. The generators of waste in these states will be divided into two groups: those who generate 50 pounds of waste or more per month and those who generate less than 50 pounds a month or per shipment of regulated waste. Both groups must separate, package, label, mark and track medical wastes according to the document provided by the Environ- mental Protection Agency, Managing
and Tracking Medical Wastes: A Guide to the Federal Program for Generators. (This 19-page document is available through the EPA by calling 1-800/424-9346, or 382-3000 in Washington D.C.)
The EPA has been required to evaluate this federal experiment through mid-1991 and make a recommendation to Congress on whether it should be extended to cover waste generators in other states. Generators disposing of waste on site or in the sewer system are not covered by the program but must keep certain records.
Dental boards retain authority on licensure Of the 31 dental boards which have statutory authority to recognize the license granted to a dentist by another jurisdiction, 22 choose to use this authority. The other nine jurisdictions either have not adopted rules to implement a license recognition system or have suspended the practice, either formally or informally. Once the jurisdiction decides to have a license recognition system, it gives the dental boards the right to decide whether or not to use the statutory authority, called licensure by creden- tials, by endorsement, by criteria or by reciprocity.
The dental boards which have statutory authority to grant license recognition and actually exercise that authority are Connecticut, Washington D.C.*, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa*, Kansas, Kentucky*, Maine, Maryland, Massa- chusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire*, New Jersey*, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma*, Pennsylvania*, Washing- ton and Wisconsin*. (* indicates those jurisdictions that accept applications only from licensees of states that also grant license recognition.)
Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming have chosen not to use this authority.
For further information concerning a state's current practices and specific criteria for license recognition, contact the state's dental board.
