In 1951, a Swedish orthopedic surgeon called Per-Ingvar Brånemark was working on a research project to determine how bone heals. In order to examine blood flow within the bone, he, together with a clinical team, implanted a titanium cylinder into the thighbone of a rabbit. Over the ensuing months, they recorded their observations, wrote up their results and completed their research. Little did Per-Ingvar Brånemark know that he was about to make a discovery that would forever change and shape the landscape of orthopedic surgery.
