$1,000 FOR BEYOND BLUE I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Year 12 who raised $1,000 for Beyond Blue from their auction and Year 12 Formal. Well done to Year 12 and Miss Norman for this amazing effort as well as to everyone who made donations. Beyond Blue plays an important role in supporting people who are struggling and it is fantastic to be able to provide such financial support. MOVEMBER The Movember Foundation is the only global charity focused solely on men's health, so this Movember we are getting on board. We are raising funds to tackle some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and poor mental health. Help us stop men dying too young. Some statistics: Australia men on average die 4 years younger than women. 5 men each day in Australia take their own lives. More than 3,300 Australian men will die from Prostrate cancer this year. I will be getting involved along with a team from Deniliquin High to raise awareness of men’s health issues and to raise funds for the Movember campaign. Please feel free to support us by visiting http://moteam.co/deniliquin-high-school Figure 1 Shaved and ready for Movember TERM 4 EVENTS The next few weeks promises to be a busy time for staff and students. A number of students will be heading off on the end of year excursions with Year 9 off to Howmans Gap and Year 11 making their way down to Melbourne to explore post school options. Year 8 students have begun their VALID Science test which will run over the next week while Year 10 are busily preparing for their end of year exams which will run from November 14-16. A very special day for our Aboriginal students will be held at the RSL Club on Thursday 17/11 starting at 11am. The Proud and Deadly awards acknowledge the achievements of our Aboriginal students across a broad range of areas. This is a joint celebration with all of the schools in the local area and it promises to be a great day for all involved. Things are beginning to build towards the Great Vic Bike Ride in week 8 and the very important Year 10 Driver Education program which will run in week 9. Both of these programs provide students with skills that will help them for the remainder of the lives and will create memories that some will keep forever. Thank you to all of those involved in the organisation of these events. The huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes is what makes them so successful. EXCITING TIMES IN YEAR 7 SCIENCE This term in Year 7 Science, students are undertaking a unit called Camping in the Aussie Bush. As part of this, we are learning about forces including contact and non-contact forces and friction. 7 Red, under the guidance of Mr Proudfoot, a pre-service teacher from UNE, have undertaken a special project. Learning about buoyancy, groups of students have spent the last few lessons designing boats with limited equipment, these boats were designed with the aim of holding the maximum amount of mass. This came to a climax on Wednesday when there was the great sink-off. While most boats held less than 300 grams, the winning boat, ‘SS Volcano’, stayed afloat until 1050 g had been added! The winning design was constructed by Duncan Hughes, James Bradford, Jack Michael and Jordy Doidge. Well done, boys! Miss Burton and Mr Proudfoot

NEWS FROM THE M.A.D. Squad (Make a Difference)

On Wednesday 26th October Deniliquin High School

held their annual Big Blue Day. Students were able to wear casual clothes for the day if they brought a gold coin donation. Tiarna Condren spoke at assembly. The theme for NSW Mental Health month is “Learn and Grow”. There are times in all our lives where we need that extra bit of support. 1 in 5 people suffer from a mental health condition some time in their lives. It does not mean you are crazy or anything, it just means you may need that extra bit of support from someone else. It's normal to sometimes have feelings of sadness and worry. It's when these feelings are consistent and have an impact on our lives, a disorder may be present and you may need that extra support. Mental health is more than people being diagnosed with a disorder like depression, everyone has mental health. Just like our physical health, we need to look after our mental health. We can call this our mental wellbeing.

There are some important things we can do to improve and maintain good mental well-being. Sleep is important, school students need about 8-10 hours of sleep a night. Enjoy healthy food. This means eat regular balanced meals and drink enough water throughout the day. Plan and prioritise homework to

reduce stress. Alcohol, cigarettes and other drugs have an effect on your mental wellbeing. These substances cause changes in your mood and can cause depression and anxiety. The MAD Squad made and sold chocolate chip cookies and brownies at recess, these sold out within ten minutes, next time we will have to make more. At lunchtime we set up sensory tables. These tables were staffed by our MAD Squad, at each table students go to do a sensory activity. It’s a lot of fun and good for your mental health. They are soothing activities. We had our Positivity Tree on display, students were able to write a positive message and in return they received a beyond blue wrist band. The tree is now displayed in the Henry Street Office area. Remember if you need that little bit of extra support you need to talk to someone. There are many organisations that can help you online and in person here are just a few: Beyondblue, Headspace, Kids helpline and Accessline. Here is Deniliquin there is the ROAR program that is run through Intereach and also Vinnies Support program. There are also lots of apps you can get for your electronic devices. The MAD Squad raised $388 on the day, but we had to take out expenses for the ingredients for our cookies and brownies. Thank you on behalf of the MAD Squad. This way we all Make a Difference.

GVBR TRAINING RIDE TO MAYRUNG Last Wednesday 18 out of our 26 GVBR students rode out to Mayrung Primary School where thanks to the cooperation of Mrs Jacobs and her staff we were able to feast on sausages and have a refreshing soft drink. The sausages were cooked to perfection by Ben Howitt and his student helpers. Aden Bermingham and Jack Michael gave a talk to the primary school students about bike safety and riding in a peloton. The ride out there and back was 84kms in total and we had a nice tail wind on the way out to help us make good time. We were supported by Ronan Water’s mum Fiona and Rachel and Cam Crockart’s mum Julie, who drove support vehicles behind the groups and carried drinks and bike pumps. We had 3 parent riders, Nat Shaw, Sue Pitts and Carrie Kelvy assisting us with the riders and DHS staff Matt Kiley, Alex Glowrey and Sue Laing
