The Association for Dementia Studies

The Association for Dementia Studies, established in May 2009, under the leadership of Professor Dawn Brooker, is a multi-professional university research centre with many years of experience in the field of person-centred dementia care and support.

We make a cutting edge contribution to developing evidence-based practical ways of working with people living with dementia, their families, friends and carers that enable them to live well.

We draw on and contribute to the international evidence base for person-centred dementia care.

Using this evidence, we deliver education programmes that empower people to provide skilled, competent and compassionate care.

Our work influences policy change at a local, national and international level and changes practice on the front line.

Our research informs practice and policy for people living with dementia, their families, and the professionals who support them. We work in partnership with organisations across the public, private and third sectors.

People with dementia, their families and their carers inform our work at all stages.

Education and Development opportunities provided by the Association for Dementia Studies for organisations and individuals The Association for Dementia Studies (ADS) provides a broad spectrum of development and education opportunities, ranging from short continuing professional development (CPD) sessions to 6 day courses. We also provide academic modules held within the University of Worcester.

The Association for Dementia Studies team, led by Professor Dawn Brooker, have a track record in providing consistently high quality education. As a multidisciplinary team from a wide variety of professions we are able to create an education package that meets the needs of your workforce. Education courses can be delivered at a location that is convenient to your employees.

We work from a position of evidence-based practice. We bring to all our workshops and courses the latest and most up-to-date evidence from research and best practice. We work from an international perspective, drawing on an international evidence base.

We can provide you with evaluation of the improvements in confidence and knowledge of the staff who attend. We can also undertake an assessment of impact of the training on practice in your care setting by completing a more in-depth evaluation

Depending on the length of the course, delegates have the opportunity to undertake a piece of independent study and be awarded university credit at level 6 (degree) or level 7 (masters), by completing the Negotiated Learning module or via the Acute or Community Course assignment. We also provide a range of continuing professional development (CPD) options to meet the needs of the acute care workforce. Our programme builds on the tier 1 awareness training1 already provided by organisations as part of their mandatory training.

Other shorter programmes, workshops and masterclasses can be tailored to meet the needs of specific sectors of the multi-disciplinary workforce. For example, we are currently delivering a 3 hour education programme is aimed at GPs and senior members of the Primary Care Team with responsibility for or an interest in dementia.

As well as bespoke non-accredited education courses, the Association for Dementia Studies is also able to work with partners to develop university accredited modules. For example, ADS has worked with Dementia UK to develop a university module for Admiral Nurses.

If you would like to know more please contact us and we will work with you to ensure that we understand the learning outcomes that you require from the education, and the course will be developed to meet these outcomes.

Examples of bespoke courses that we currently have running:

Leading person-centred services for people living with dementia This 4-6 day course is delivered in two-day blocks over a number of months, with approximately one month spacing between each block. This enables the use of an Action Learning approach to ensure that learners have the opportunity to put into practice what they are learning in each block. The course enables learners to reflect on ways of developing their service through exploring current thinking on person- centred care, policy, research and best practice. They will be empowered to achieve change through application of the VIPS framework. This course is aimed at people with operational responsibility for the management of care in addition to strategic and policy leaders. We believe in creating change from the leadership level and then helping it filter through the system.

Specialist Practice in Dementia Care This 6 day course is delivered in two or three day blocks over a number of months, with approximately one month spacing between each block. This enables the use of an Action Learning approach to ensure that learners have the opportunity to put into practice what they are learning in each block. This course is aimed at people who have responsibility for developing care plans or providing day-to- day care to people with dementia. The course enables learners to reflect on ways of developing their service through exploring current thinking on person-centred care, policy, research and best practice. Some of the main learning outcomes are developing care plans based on the enriched model of dementia care; developing and applying cultural competence and helping people who have extreme distress and complex needs.

Excellent Care for Patients with Dementia in Hospitals and Community Settings This course is aimed at professionals in the health system this is generally delivered as a 6 day course in two-day blocks over a number of months, with approximately one month spacing between each block. This enables the use of an Action Learning approach to ensure that learners have the opportunity to put into practice what they are learning in each block.

Shorter courses, Workshops and Masterclasses We can also offer a number of shorter courses, workshops and masterclasses which can be commissioned and tailored to your organisations needs. They can also be delivered at the University, at your own location or at another venue of your choice.
