Welcome Last year was an exciting and successful year for the Friends of SWGS, which was highlighted at our AGM at the beginning of November. Our two regular fundraisers, the 1000 Club and the Easter Raffle, both raised more money than in the previous year, and School Fund donations also increased. As a result, we achieved our aim and raised £10,000 to refurbish the two new computer rooms. We were also able to spend £1,200 on Speech Day prizes. A big “thank you” to everyone who headed up an event, and all our brilliant volunteers. Mrs Stratton, as President, took the opportunity to tell us more about the future Academy status of SWGS. She also thanked the Committee for all they have done – we’ll soon have a school full of plaques saying ‘donated by the Friends of SWGS’! We are now busy fundraising for a new 12-seater minibus. As it is slightly smaller than the vehicle it is replacing, it can be driven by those with newer driving licences. This will save the school the cost of driving tests to enable staff to drive the larger vehicle – about £1,000 each. The good news is we are already halfway there! The committee voted in the same Officers as previously, and we’ve swelled our ranks with three new members: Christophni Kolin, Di Cross and Jo Sutherland, all Year 7 parents. This is good news as a number of us will be leaving at the end of this year. We are always pleased to see new faces at meetings, or helping at our events. More information on the AGM can be accessed via the website (http://www.swgs.wilts.sch.uk/ defaultPage.asp?Page=8), along with past newsletters that give details of our fundraising activities. Finally, have an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. See you next term! Sarah Snell, Chair Skittles Night The Year 7 family skittles evening at Laverstock Village Hall on 2nd October was a great success, with nearly a hundred people attending. Weʼre sorry we didnʼt have room for everyone, and weʼre looking at ways of increasing capacity for next year. The event gave new Year 7s and their families a chance to get to know each other a little better and it was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to the Year 7 Sixth Form Prefects who ran the skittles and helped bring out the killer instinct in students and parents when it came to knocking down that last pin! BOOK IT! FSWGS ran a book stall at Salisbury Market on Saturday 4th December. Many thanks to everyone who contributed books for us to sell. It was an icy Saturday morning and business was slow until the thaw had set in. We kept warm with plenty of hot tea, thermal layers, laughter and good company! Thank you to all our helpers and especially to Ali Hall, who had a fall on the ice and later found she had a fractured elbow. We all send our love and hope it gets better really soon. This gives you the opportunity to commemorate a loved one while helping the Learning Resource Centre keep up with the growing demand for new books. Your personal bookplate (designed by sixth formers) will be placed at the front of your book, written by hand in beautiful copperplate. We are seeking £5 per dedication, and either a selection will be made for you or you can suggest a specific category (visit the website for further details and to download a form). Our thanks to all the staff for keeping school open during the snow – from the kitchen serving hot food to the Maintenance Officer and Head shovelling snow at 6am – and for the clear and efficient communications.
