Coverage All weekend long!!

By COURTNEY WESTLAKEFor the Herald & Review

DECATUR – Twenty-fiveyears ago, Camilla McKinneywas a local business owner whowas dining with someemployees at the oldAmbassador Inn in Decatur.“At the end, there was myself

and an employee left, and somestranger came up and asked meabout getting involved with acommunity event,” McKinneysaid. That stranger was Fred Puglia,

who was putting together thefirst Decatur Celebration. Andsince that first year, the DecaturCelebration has grown andthrived to become one of thelargest street festivals in thestate, thanks largely in part toits willing volunteers, especiallythose who chair the event.McKinney, who is now thedirector of hospitality, and DeanSevere, who is the director ofoperations, have been a part ofthe Celebration since virtuallythe beginning. That first year, McKinney was

put in charge of the party for thechairman, before the event, andthe after-party for everyone, aswell as the handicap parking.“Then I took over the Kids

Block and totally revamped it,and we made it into a totallyfree place where kids can have afestival inside of a festival,” shesaid. “I also ran the show stageand then hospitality.”“I’m in a nice, air-conditioned

building now, and I feed andtake care of people, so I don’thave a problem with that at all!”she laughed. “I always told FredI’d move anytime they want meto.”After McKinney’s first year of

volunteering at the Celebration, she saw a need for anoperations team when shecontinually called her husbandto come help set up tables andstages and for other jobs. SoSevere entered the picture and

has been in charge of theoperations ever since.“Little did I know what I was

in for, but it’s been a lot of fun,”Severe said of approachingPuglia about volunteering. “Idescribe it as a family reunionwhen you see the vendors andvolunteers year after year.”Both Severe and McKinney are

thrilled with how much theCelebration has expanded overthe years and all of the changesthey’ve seen during that time.“There were only a few stages

that first year,” McKinney said.“And I used to know all of theacts and I don’t know who theyare now – my kids do! There’sbeen expansion, but we are stillkeeping it such a good, clean, wholesome place. Becauseusually when these thingsexpand, something slips. (At theCelebration), everyone knowswhat we’re doing and pitchesin.”“It’s been kept a family affair,”

she added. “You never worryabout bringing little childrendown there. I’ve never been to afestival anywhere where it’s likethat. You just don’t see that atother places.”McKinney said she has always

been and continues to beimpressed with the acts thatcome to the Celebration toperform. To keep them comingback, she makes sure that herteam treats the performers well.“We have the whole second

floor of the Madden ArtsCenter; everyone comes to myplace to have lunch, supper, cooldown, change clothes,” she said.“We’ve got a farmer who bringsfresh vegetables every year. Alot of the people are on the roadall the time and never getanything like that, so they loveit. We try to make itcomfortable, homey so they canperform their very best and lookforward to coming back everyyear.”The word has spread among

artists about the Celebration,

McKinney said, and many arenow clamoring to play at theevent.“It’s amazing to realize the

level of these stars who comein,” she said. “We’ve had actscome in and say they’ve beenwanting to play here becausethey heard good things aboutit.”“I love the hospitality side of

it,” she added. “I can’t think ofanything else I’d rather do. A lotof times I don’t get to see theiracts so I have a joke now thatthey have to sing a chorus fortheir supper.”McKinney said she has been

proud to see younger membersof the community come in tohelp run the Celebration andcontinue its success. Things arecoming full circle this year fromthe start of their careers asMcKinney’s son Scott is now inthe process of taking over theoperations scene from Severe.“The first year started with

Scott’s dad, and Scott was threeor four years old then,” Severesaid. “Now Scott’s going tofurnish his own crew, and I’ll bethere to direct him. I’m justgoing to be a mouth this year.”It’s hard to explain why they

do what they do, butvolunteering for the Celebrationhas been very fulfillingpersonally for its chairpersonsas well as gratifying to see thecity of Decatur come alive andbring joy to families across thearea.“I think it’s one of the best,

most positive things we have,”McKinney said. “Whatever I cando to help in any way, I’m goingto keep helping. Everybodypitches in together; it’s just beena good atmosphere.”

When asked if she wouldcontinue for years down theroad, the answer came quickly.“If there’s still a need, sure,”

she said. “I’ve got grandkidsand great-grandkids starting tocome down for it, and I want tobe a part of it for them. I can’tname on one hand activities thatare this positive and involve somany people, so it needs tostay.”The volunteers are “what

make the Celebration,” Severesaid.“The best thing I like is that

people enjoy themselves,” hesaid. “We’ve really put togethera first class weekend ofentertaining. And the thing somany people don’t understandis that it’s not only a good time– there are so many non-profitgroups who make their budgeton parking cars or sellingstrawberry shortcake.”Though time is spent year-

round to plan the event, and theweekend itself makes for someincredibly long hours – Severe isdowntown working fromSunday early morning toMonday morning at 5 a.m. – itswell worth it to the volunteers.“It has to be a labor of love

because we put a lot of hours in,but it’s worth it because peopleenjoy it,” Severe said. “To thinkthis has gone on for 25 years, that’s pretty special.”Without hesitation, he added,

“I hope it continues for another25 years. I think the people ofDecatur need it. Anytime wecan sell our town to that manypeople for a weekend, it’s goingto be a win-win situation foreveryone.”[email protected]

Charles parlier Chapter #24 of the

Korean War Veterans Association

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. The 105 members of the Charles Parlier Chapter #24 of the Korean War Veterans Association are proud tohave served in defending a country they never knew and people they had never met. There were 26 killed in action from Macon County and 1744 from the Stateof Illinois. Their message to all citizens is to please remember to support the armed forces because freedom is not free.

Seamus McDonagh

Seamus McDonagh, a native of Ireland, is best known as theworld ranked #3 cruiser weight boxer who fought EvanderHolyfield for Heavyweight Title in June 1990. Although

McDonagh, who was then 27, had a degree in English literaturefrom St. John’s University, he was a brawler with a big left hookand a fighting heart. From the first bell, he attacked Holyfield with the rugged

determination that had made him a New York fan favorite. But ashard as McDonagh tried, Holyfield would not be beaten that night. He fiercely stopped McDonagh in the fourth round and went on tomassive successes in bouts with Buster Douglas, Mike Tyson,Riddick Bowe, George Foreman and Larry Holmes.“Fighting Holyfield was my 15 minutes of fame,” said

McDonagh, who amassed a record of 19-3-1 (14 KOS) during acareer that lasted from 1985-91. “But it has already lasted 16 years.”McDonagh fought just once more after the Holyfield fight, one

year later against journeyman Jesse Shelby and was beaten in theseventh round. After his final fight, McDonagh was overcome byalcoholism and later moved to San Francisco. He got sober wellover 15 years ago and has not had a drink since.Since the late nineties, McDonagh has operated the Moscone

Shoe Shine Concession at the Moscone Center in downtown SanFrancisco. A first class raconteur with an abundance of Irish charm,he has no shortage of repeat customers.McDonagh is currently one the lead characters in a movie called

"The Shankill Road" which is in production in Los Angeles,California, about the notorious loyalist-conducted paramilitaryactivities in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the 1970's.He was also the lead in the Off-Broadway production of a new

play called "Kid Shamrock" written by Bobby Cassidy Jr. about hisfather's life as a professional boxer in NewYork City. It was directedby Gary Morgan in the summer of 2007 and by Patrick McCulloughin 2008.“Life is good today,” said McDonagh. “Actually it has never been

better. I have no regrets. Everything that I’ve been through broughtme to where I am today. Today, I’m in a good place.”

DECATUR – While theDecatur Celebration hasexperienced its share ofhighs and lows during thepast 25 years, the festival hascarried on thanks in largepart to its major sponsors, including J.L. HubbardInsurance and Bonds andSkeff Distributing Company. The two Decatur companieshave sponsored theCelebration for every one ofthose 25 years, believing thatthe event is an example ofthe best of what Decatur hasto offer.“The Celebration is one of

the positive things we canalways tout when we are inother communities,” saidKevin Breheny, president ofJ.L. Hubbard Insurance andBonds. “We have this uniqueevent that is seldom seenanywhere else.”John Skeffington,

president and CEO of SkeffDistributing, agrees.“I really believe that the

Celebration is thegranddaddy of all events forthe city, just by the numbersof people that attend,” hesaid. “It makes people feelgood about the communityand has a huge economicimpact on the city.”As sponsors, Skeffington

and Breheny have, of course, supported the Celebrationfinancially. But beyond that,

each has been generalchairman and president ofthe event’s board ofdirectors. Breheny recallsthat in 1998, the year he heldthose positions, theCelebration saw one of itsbiggest acts ever light up thestage.“About a month before the

Celebration, I got a call fromFred Puglia and wasdisappointed to hear that theKiller Bees cancelled on us,”said Breheny. “Fred wasrunning through the namesof possible acts we could getand mentioned RickSpringfield. I said, ‘Fred, thiscould be a blessing indisguise. I think he could behuge.’”It turned out that Breheny

was right. As he remembersit, Springfield signedautographs for two and ahalf hours the night of hisperformance. But Breheny is not one to

look back without lookingforward too. He anticipatesthis year’s lineup as beingone of the best ever.“There will be the Charlie

Daniels Band, Exposé —a lotof the usual amazing eclecticacts,” he said. “It’s been neatto see how resilient theadministration is and howthey’ve worked throughcrises to put together anothergreat event.”Skeffington said that

because he’s usually so busy

working the Celebration, hedoesn’t get to enjoy a lot ofthe acts. But he takes greatpleasure in being a part ofthe street festival.“Our business is

associated with fun, and it’sa fun event,” he said. “Itbrings…great music andpeople together, and we arevery involved. Ourcompany’s been in town for45 years, and we try toassociate ourselves with thebest things in the communityand make them as successfulas we can by being part ofthose things.“We are truly happy we’ve

had the opportunity toparticipate for the past 25years.”[email protected]

honored to host the DirtyCar Artist, Scott Wade at

North & Water Streets.Like any reasonable

creative and curious human,

Scott can’t resist a dirty rearcar window. We suspect thatScott started off with cleversayings like “wash me.”Probably his first image wasthe ubiquitous smiley face.Unlike most folks however,Scott lives on a mile and a halfof dirt road – caliche, as thelocals call it – road-base; ablend of limestone dust andgravel and clay. Driving overthis surface results in a fine, white dust that billows upbehind any vehicle drivenfaster than a galloping turtle, coating the rear window.

As an experienced artist, itwasn’t long before Scott wasexperimenting with techniquesto achieve amazingly detailedand shaded drawings on thedirty car windows. His worksinclude depictions of classicart such as the Mona Lisa andStarry Night, plus funportraits and cartoons. Scott’squirky art was featured on theHistory Channel program“Modern Marvels” earlier thisyear and has been seen aroundthe world.
