The Booker T. Washington Society develops students and leaders of good character and integrity. Inspired by the life, legacy and philosophy of great American and namesake, Booker T. Washington, the Society is neither an ‘historical’ society nor a ‘think’ tank. Rather, the Society is a “do” tank, dedicated to bringing about positive change through five major program avenues: 1- Build up the Booker T. family network of independent afiliated Booker T. Boosters, Clubs, and Chapters across America. 2 - Educate the public with events, speeches, contests, and an online library of books by Booker T. and others. 3 - Publish books, booklets, logbooks, and study guides to engage and motivate Booker T. Club members (and the public) to live, learn, and lead with character and integrity. 4 - Train community leaders, coaches, and teachers in the “Booker T. Way” so as to enable them to lead, sponsor, and mentor youths in their area. 5 - Scholarships for deserving students, funded primarily by local affiliates for local Booker T. Clubbers, so that students who demonstrate high character throughout their school years, can look forward to continuing their education in meaningful ways upon graduating from high school.

Message from Ronald CourtWow. I just realized it’s been a little over ten years since the Society’s founding !It all began in the summer of 2005 with a simple idea born out of a random thought: “How come no one seems to honor Booker T. Washington’s life and legacy enough to cel-ebrate his 150th birthday, April 5, 2006?”Answering that question gave birth to what is, in his honor, a burgeoning national orga-nization dedicated to benefit youths. We help young Americans discover their potential and choose to use their God-given abilities in pro-ductive, constructive ways to benefit them-selves and their community and country.Originally conceived as a “one and done” cel-ebration of our namesake’s Sesquicentennial, we soon realized that, to do justice to his life and legacy, it should be a big shindig in Wash-ington, DC -- and should also include scholar-ships for deserving students. An essay contest to select ‘BTW Ambassadors’ from BTW high schools naturally followed.Still, 25 scholarships over two years taught me that scholarships do the most good when a recipient already exhibits character through his/her respect for community and country. As Booker T. said, ‘You can fill a head with knowledge ... but unless it is built upon high upright character... it will amount to nothing.’

His shining example teaches that even when born into a world full of adversity, we have a choice: We can grow resentful and bitter... Or we can choose to be resourceful and better.Yet today, tens of thousands of youths all across America don’t know they have a choice. This is where we need to be.Why? Because choosing to be resourceful and better is not easy: it takes inspired motivation, determination, and a sustained effort, over time, to make the right choices repeatedly. So that’s our mission: to engage, encourage, and equip young Americans for success... with plenty of positive role models to help show the way. This is what we do, and with your help, will continue to do. I hope you enjoy reading the highlights of this 1st Decade Report of your Society’s ‘doing’ since that summer in 2005.I say ‘your,’ because, in a very real sense, this is your Society. It is your generosity and spirit that enables your Society to reach, inspire and equip those who need help the most. So, thank you for all you’ve done. Now, let’s get started on the next decade!

Ronald A. Court, President & Founder

“You either stand on the sidelines and wring your hands, or you try to do something, even if the effort isn’t fully appreciated or fails to get

immediate results. That’s the choice, which isn’t any choice at all. James Rouse

The Booker T. Way empowers, inspires, and equips young Americans to excel by re-affirming that, within each of us, lies the power to choose to live, learn, and lead with character. The Booker T. Way celebrates the positive visions, vir-tues and values of life.It springs from a simple truth: young people grow up to become responsible adults with good character by..

1) observing, absorbing, and embracing good habits of good people, 2) receiving appropriate recognition and praise for successfully accomplishing challenging tasks. 3) finding and bonding with positive peers for mutual encouragement and support.

BuildingBooker T. Boosters, Clubs, and ChaptersEach year, tens of thousands of youths enter adulthood barely aware of what good character is. Metro area Booster Clubs form and support local Booker T. Clubs, our innovative after-school program for middle schoolers to live, learn, and lead with character ... and we do it in a fun and engaging way.

Success Stories...from a parent, members and Coach of the first Booker T. Clubs in the country:

When principals, guidance counselors and teachers throughout the South advised us that, “high school is almost too late” to talk about builiding character, we shifted from high school to middle schoolers, developed a club approach, envisioned national infra-structure and drafted corporate documents to tie it all together.

l Created templates for non-profit corporate Articles and Bylaws as a formal, legal structure for adults to join together as independent, local BT Booster Clubs.

l Secured 501c3 group exempt status, so that Booster Clubs can offer tax benefits when raising local funds to support local middle school kids, clubs, and con-tests throughout their “hub” (district) of influence.

l Formed 1st BT. Boosters (BTB) Club - Evansville, IN. l Southwestern, IN YMCA sponsored the nation’s first

Booker T. Club (BTC) - Caldwell Center. (Archie Carter, Pres. BT Boosters - Evansville, was the driving force.)

l BTC- Evansville Clubbers 3 day trip to Tuskegee, Troy, & Faulkner Universities and Selma Alabama. (trip sponsored by Southwestern YMCA)

l BTB-Evansville raised $4,000+ to sponsor essay con-tests and BT clubs in their Southwestern Indiana ‘hub’

“You may fill you heads with knowledge or skillfully train your hands, but unless it is based on high, upright character, upon a true heart, it will

amount to nothing.” -- Booker T. Washington

“Since he’s been with the Booker T. Club, I’ve seen his confidenced, and I’ve seen his character and integrity just climb.” Mother, Booker T. Club - Caldwell Center “Booker T. has helped me understand life, and how to work through your problems, and it’s just been a great experience.” - Angel, a Lincoln School Booker T. Clubber “I grown as a young man to be able to reach the children and give them the opportunity to understand that you can do greatness in life coming from different areas and backgrounds.”

“In the sight of God there is no color line and we want to cultivate a spirit that will make us forget there’s such a line anyway.”

Booker T. Washington

Educating & Scholarshipsutilizing conferences, parade , website, talks... Your Society and affiliates use Annual ‘Celebrate BTW” events (held around BTW’s April 5 b’day) to educate the public, raise awareness and yes, funds to support our key focus: build clubs to raise a new generation with respect for character, community and country. (We hope to revive scholarships for deserving students in the future, as funds permit.).

l 11 scholarships in 2006 to BTW high school students from Atlanta, Memphis, Miami, Pensacola, Terre Haute, Tulsa, Norfolk, Washington DC, Houston and Dallas.

l 14 scholarships in 2007 to students from five high schools in New Orleans, LA (NOLA) in its lower 9th ward, the heaviest hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2006.

l Transcribed & posted for free public access on our web-site: 9 complete books by BTW, 9 articles, 12 speeches, several honors, etc. (this is an ongoing project, and will post more as funds dedicated to this purpose become available).

l E-mail News: “CharacterPower” & “Rise Up” : 4,000 read-ers.

l Featured as guest or keynote speaker in cities in 15 states. Audiences included local service clubs (Rotary, Ki-wanis, Optimist), churches and middle and high schools .

l Mayors of 2 cities proclaim, BTW Appreciation Day.

Success StoryA Booker T. Washington Society “Ambassador” Scholarship recipient:”

The New Alpha Missionary Baptist Church choir joined the BTW Society on its parade float for Memorial Day in Vermont. In addition to local schools and service clubs throughout the South and mid-west, the Society’s educational outreach extended to churches in Louisiana, Florida, North Carolina, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, and Alabama.

“I am beyond grateful for the opportunity the Booker T. Washington scholar-ship provided me. I have applied the concept of hard work in many aspects of my life. This opportunity taught me to work hard and aspire to motivate and uplift others. At the time, I was experiencing life changing events that many other young adults can relate to [but] I did not give up on my dreams...thank you for believing in me!” Courtney Richardson - BTW Ambassador, ‘07; Baylor University, ‘12; Baylor Medical, ‘17

27,600+ The leadership and faculty of RCA has long advocated BTW’s philos-ophy. Students at this Massachusetts boarding school hail from around the country, the Carib-bean, and Europe.

Because New Orleans’ BTW high school was flooded during Katrina (and remained closed), we could not identify its students to offer scholarships. Thus came the idea to follow up the next year with NOLA students in its nearby schools. Each 2007 recipient (L.) of a Booker T. Washington Society “Ambassador’ scholarship attended one of the five high schools in New Orleans’ lower 9th Ward, when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.

PublishingBooks, Booklets & Logbooks for BT Clubs and the public. Your Society’s publishing “arm” is projected, eventually, to produce a net income for the Society by creating and publishing texts and other materials for purchase by the public as well as affiliated clubs. The society intends, however, that its proprietary BookerT. Clubber Logbooks be distributed and sold only in conjunction with the formation and operation of affiliated Booker T. Clubs. We believe strongly that simply reading a logbook unaccompanied by proper guidance and positive reinforcement found in a Booker T. Club, is simply insuf-ficient to bring about the positive, life-affirming changes we desire for all youths.

Jennifer Faulkner (r.) and Judy Moore are the two creators of The Navigator’s Logbook: the first in a 4-part series for Booker T. Clubbers. The Logbook began as Jennifer’s brainchild.Judy, a 2006 BTW Ambassador scholarship recipient (and today a U. of Florida and Barry U. graduate (MBA), volunteered her own time to fly from Miami to Vermont to aid in this project.

We’ve made a great start, but there is so much more to do: production has begun on the Editor’s logbook (2d in the series). In the works: publishing our own edition of Char-acter Building. We’ll save money and be able to include an ap-pendix as a primer on public speaking.

We see Character Building as the a key resource text for Booker T. Washington Society Chapters for high schoolers. We also see chapters being formed by and for Booker T. Clubbers who ma-triculate from middle to high school. Also in the concept stage: an American Hero booklet series, featuring our founding fathers and other famous folks of great character.

“At the bottom of education, at the bottom of politics, even at the bottom of religion itself, there must be for our race, as for all races, an economic foundation, economic prosperity, economic independence.”

Booker T. Washington

l Wrote, published and revised our best “seller”: Booker T. Washington - American Hero. Over 35,000 copies have been sold or given away.

l Developed and produced the Booker T. Clubber’s Navigator’s Logbook, designed to engage middle schoolers in a fun, yet challenging way, with ex-ercises and quotations from famous role models throughout history and around the world.

l Developed the 80+ p. Booster Leader’s Guide, a de-tailed template for forming and leading indepen-dent, locally organized Booster Clubs nation-wide.

l Developed a 60+ pg. Booker T. Club Coach’s Guide providing a step-by-step guide with ‘talking points’ for every quotation, picture, and person depicted in the Navigator’s logbook.

l Produced the 1st in a 3-part Study Guide (by G. Stax) series for high schoolers designed to accompany Character Building, a compilation of 38 of BTW’s ‘Sunday Evening Talks.’

“Every student, every teacher, and especially every principal, should read and use the LogBooks in their school” --Dr. Ben Chavis - Founder AIM Public Charter School, Oakland,CA

“To this day, I still live by values and morals that I picked up from the Booker T. Washington Society.” Judy Moore, (2006 Amb - Miami) - U. of Florida (‘2010) and Barry U (MBA ‘16)

“I’ve taught several character training courses over the years...this is the best by far.” Pamela Shales, 6th Grade Teacher, New Orleans, LA

“I love that the Society takes a positive approach to self-discipline and personal respon-sibility.” Sandra Luraas, English Teacher -Redemption Christian Academy

“There’s nothing like that Navigator’s Log book! Any school kid can learn from this. Herman A. Amos, Harlem Resident, New York City

“This is just what our school system needs.” Robert Wyman, Guidance Counselor, New Orleans

TrainingClub Coaches, parent volunteers and local mentors... Our initial focus was necessarily on raising awareness through events and scholar-ships, then on developing, deploying, and testing the club concept and materials with clubbers. Formal Club Coach and Booster leader training had to wait until we had some! Up to now, training has largely been informal, conducted partly through one-on-one conversations over coffee and on the road, followed up by several evening phone calls to Booster leaders and Club Coaches. Along the way, your Society has learned as much as it has ‘taught.’ This gave rise to creating online networks serving Coaches and Boosters, so that, each may benefit from the ‘boots on the ground’ experience of others.

Willie Taylor, VP, Booker T. Boosters Club (Evansville, IN) & Chair, Education/Training, opening a mock meeting of the Caldwell Ctr. BT. Club (2015).

The lion’s share of the Society’s combined educa-tional outreach, curriculum development and train-ing efforts have, of necessity, been dedicated to educational outreach and curriculum development. With our curriculum concept and development now in place and on-going, and our first leader-ship guides produced and published, your Society is poised to develop and promote a formal training program for Booster Leaders and Club Coaches As more clubs are planted, we fully envision the need for this training to support and sustain that growth. To date, we have,

l Conducted first ‘formal’ training in Evansville. l Built private communications networks to

aad Booster Leaders and Club Coaches in the sharing of information and experiences, as well as an online repository for their own club documents to enable easy access by other authorized club members / directors.

Thank You !Without your financial and moral support, none of this would... or could... happen. So, Thank You. Our website’s list of curent donors is updated every six months.

Archie Carter, President, Booker T. Boosters addressing BT Clubbers, family members and guests at it’s 2nd Annual BTW Celebrate Birthday Party (2015).

I am personally grateful for the hospitality extended by so many who opened their homes to me during my travels... in most cases, putting me up for the duration of my stay in their city.

Activities Statement (since inception) Initially, the Society kept its books on a cash basis, using Intuit’s simple Quicken category system. But by 2011, anticipating a national scope to its operations, the Society switched to the accrual method using Quickbooks, and has built a robust chart of accounts that enables the Society to properly handle the recording of restricted donations to the Society as well as by donors for the Society’s independent affiliates. The statement below represents the total Receipts and Disbursements (and Loans)since the formation of the Society (Summer, 2015) to the end of FY 2016, (June 30, 2016).

FY ’16 Financial Position (June 30, 2016) The Booker T. Washington Society Inc. is a non-profit tax-exempt 501(c)(3) public charitable organization. 1 - Donations On principle, the Society neither solicits nor accepts government grants or contracts. Therefore, the Society must rely on generous individuals, corporations, and foundations for its support. (FYI: To date, over 95% of donations have been made by individuals.) 2 - In-Kind Includes approximate cash values of goods and services donated to the Society over the years. 3 - Affiliate Fees The Society builds and maintains web pages for each local affiliate and assists with, and services, Booster Club funding appeals to support their local programs. For these services, the Society assesses Booster Clubs a small annual fee plus a 2-3% service fee on Booster Club donations. Note: Local, socially-oriented service orgs, like Rotary, send a portion of their membership dues to ‘National.’ However, because Booster clubs are task-oriented, the Society uses service fees to support the services provided.4 - Loans (by RAC): IRS rules indicate, that if a Director’s annual donations to a public non-profit 501c3 charity exceeds 30% of its annual revenues, the IRS could deem our non-profit a Private Family Foundation (like the Rockefellers !). This would cause the Society to lose its public charity status and be subjected to reams of paperwork. However, since the Society’s expenses (especially scholarships) for years have outpaced publicly raised funds, Director RAC chose to cover the shortfall with 0% interest loans to the Society. (These are in addition to his substantial personal donations.) Thus, Society has been able to pay its bills on time without incurring interest charges. Now, as revenues allow, the Society ‘reimburses’ RAC. RAC then returns those amounts as donations to the Society. This retains the Society’s public charity status, avoids IRS hassles and reduces the loan without drawing on any donations from the public. FYI: RAC takes no ‘salary’ (never will) - and obtains no personal tax benefit for this accommodation.5 - Build - Includes portion of RAC travel expense (roughly allocated between building clubs and educating the public.)6 - Educate - Includes web design, maintenance, and hosting; online and physical library (180+ books), conferences and travel road trip talks to service clubs, churches and schools. (10 trips in 5 yrs: average time on road: 5 mo/yr.)7 - Publish - Includes concept design, production and printing publications to sell to affiliates and general public.8 - Train - In due course, we envision summer weekend retreats for prospective Club Coaches and Booster Leaders.9 - Scholarships - Included transportation, room/meals for Ambassador scholars and their accompanying parents/ guardians in 2006 and 2007. With that experience, we concluded that benefits could not justify costs without a way to measure student motivation and aptitude over time re: initiative, commitment, etc., e.g. one’s character. (Ergo, the club concept, with future scholarships, if any, to be funded primarily locally... ‘Local dollars for local kids’.) 10 - Admin/Office - Includes general office expense unallocated to a program category or to fundseeking. The admin portions that have been allocated to one program or another are based on estimated time dedicated to them.

FY ’16 Activities (Income) Statement

NOTE: Non-profits give different names to their financial statements than for-profits. A balance sheet is called a “statement of financial position.” An income statement is a “statement of activities,” and shareholder equity is (more appropriately) referred to as “net assets.” Net assets is simply the difference between a non-profit’s assets and its liabilities.Note that some donors might place a restriction on how their donation is to be used. Thus, donated assets for non-profits are classed as “unrestricted” or “restricted.” Unrestricted assets can be used for any purpose provided the purpose is permitted in our mission statement. On the other hand, restricted net assets are those that have been earmarked by donors for a specific purpose, say, to benefit a specific Booker T. Club, or to publish/produce a book, fund a scholarship, etc.

Inspiring and EquippingYoung Americans to Excel

The Story Behind the Organization ‘Chart’ of the Booker T. Washington Society Individual Club Members (also known as ‘Clubbers,’) are positioned at the head of the Booker T. Family because, after all, everything we do is about inspiring and equipping young American individuals to excel in whatever honorable endeavor each chooses to pursue in life ... not solely for themselves, but for family, community, and country.

Booker T. CLUBS and Coaches provide a supportive environment for elementary, middle and high school age clubbers to experience success and the mindset it takes to achieve it.

Booker T. BOOSTERS sponsor, support and mentor their local clubs and link kids and schools with community leaders, often in partnership with local service organizations.

At bottom, The BTW SOCIETY assists with on-going support, books, and training to enable its network of independent Boosters, Clubs and Chapter affiliates to do the real work of building character in young lives of Americans all across our great country.

Finally, the base is shaped somewhat like the Liberty Bell. It’s to remind us that a truly liberated life is one based on high, upright character !
