FEATUREDPROJECT

Lakeland College’s Centre for Sustainable Innovation (CSI) represents a vast land base with many different co-located research facilities. The CSI hosts the Renewable Energy Learning Centre (RELC), the off grid Cabin, the Electronics and Fabrications Lab, and the Bio-Energy Centre. The site also features a research and student lab water retention pond, a gasification unit, Jerusalem artichoke plots, and a solar concentrator capable of reaching temperatures in excess of 2,000 degrees Celsius. However, the CSI is not just a research centre but also a local tourist attraction. Over the years, hundreds of local residents and companies have toured the facility at open houses, including the annual Green Energy Doors Open event.

The 2016 Green Energy Doors Open event had multiple speakers sharing information on green building and the Leadership and Environmental Design (LEED) program, as well as an Alberta Agriculture and Forestry presentation on the growing forward on-farm solar PV program.

The Centre is also very kid-friendly! Research coordinator Andrea Kastendieck has toured many children’s groups through the facility.

Lakeland College opened the doors of the CSI in 2012. The Centre is a test-bed for innovation in agricul-ture, energy, and en-vironmental sciences. The Co-op concept grew during discussions on Conservation and Sustainable Initiatives, and formed officially in 2016. The Co-op’s mandate is to fund and support energy conservation, green energy and sustainability initiatives that are within the service area.

Because dollars stay in the community, funds accumulate. The Co-op Community Fund is used for projects that members initiate. Proposals that advance Co-op goals are submitted and approved by a project committee made up of Co-op members. In effect, members fund and carry out worthwhile community projects with revenues that would otherwise go to large corporations.

DEC is looking forward to engaging its members and network with

the Canada Green Corps (CGC), an innovative new youth employment

programme designed to bridge talented, yet unemployed and

underemployed, Canadian youth to meaningful employment to ignite

Canada’s green economy. CGC participants will undertake four or six-

month work-integrated learning placements with various companies,

governments, associations, universities and civil society organisations across

Canada. The cities of focus are Vancouver, Whitehorse, Calgary, Edmonton,

Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. CGC participants may assist their

employer organisations and communities in reducing their environmental

footprint and increasing sustainability. Additionally, CGC participants may

engage their communities over the course of their placements, helping to

identify and address environmental “quick wins” in their communities and

workplaces.

Round 6 of the Alberta - Jalisco Innovation and Commercialisation ProgramThe aim of the program is to provide for-profit small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the two partner jurisdictions with assistance in establishing global partnerships, as well as accessing funding to support strategic, industry-driven commercialisation projects that involve novel and innovative products and materials. Alberta Innovates will also work with SMEs in matchmaking initiatives and engaging the Jalisco market. Both Alberta Innovates and State Council of Science and Technology of Jalisco (COECYTJAL) are seeking to generate economic and social benefits for both Alberta and Jalisco.

General program information sessions will be held at Alberta Innovates offices in Calgary and Edmonton on January 18 and 19, 2017, respectively.

If Alberta companies require a partner in Jalisco, Alberta Innovates requires company profile information prior to January 30, 2017. Our Jalisco partner, COECYTJAL, endeavours to find potential partners for Alberta SMEs. Workshops will be conducted in Guadalajara on February 23 and 24, 2017 and in Alberta on March 16 and 17, 2017.

The Campus Alberta Small Business Engagement “CASBE Program” is a pilot funding program at Alberta Innovates that leverages the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council “NSERC” Engage grants. Alberta Innovates is interested in incentivising academics and small businesses in Alberta to collaborate more and take advantage of these grants. The CASBE Program helps academics to use their world-class knowledge, facilities and students at colleges and universities within Campus Alberta to assist Micro Nano Technology “MNT” Small and Medium Enterprises “SME” in Alberta.

Applications will be accepted until 12 applications have been approved by NSERC and Alberta Innovates from the date of launching the CASBE Program until March 31, 2017.

Green Market Acceleration Program

The Green Market Acceleration Program (GMAP) provides local firms and foreign investors with an opportunity to collaborate with the City of Toronto in order to accelerate the development and commercialisation of made-in-Toronto green technologies.

Participants accepted into GMAP will gain controlled access to City-owned infrastructure and assets (ie. buildings, streets, vehicles, water) for applied research, proof of concept and demonstration pilots for their new green technologies during the early stages of product development.

GMAP participants will also have access to City staff knowledge and use of the City of Toronto as a reference when marketing their products and services locally and globally.

By supporting innovation and commercialisation within the green economy, GMAP will also:

• Accelerate job growth in Toronto’s green sector.

• Develop, attract and retain green sector talent and business.

• Boost market development including international trade for local green companies.

• Generate local and global partnerships.

• Create competitive advantages for Toronto’s green companies.

• Attract investment to Toronto firms.

Alberta-Germany Collaboration Fund

The Alberta-Germany Collaboration Fund for Product Development and Commercialisation is a joint program established by the Alberta Government`s Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and delivered by the German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research.

The overarching goal of this program is to help participants become more globally competitive by developing innovative technologies and research based alliances with the potential to foster economic growth.

Who can apply?

Albertan small and medium-sized enterprises are welcome to apply to the Alberta-Germany Collaboration Fund for Product Development and Commercialisation. German partners can be small or medium-sized enterprises, as well as larger companies or independent research institutions. However, please note that there must be at least one german SME to apply to our German funding partner ZIM (“Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand”), but research institutions and universities are also eligible for funding on the German side. All proposals to the program must involve an industry partner from each jurisdiction with an interest in commercialisation.

The application deadline is February 28th, 2017.

World’s first solar panel road opens in Normandy village

China to invest $360 billion in green energy by 2020 to reduce pollutionBy Liam Kelly, Newsweek

China will invest 2.5 trillion yuan ($360 billion) into renewable power projects by 2020 as the world’s largest consumer of energy starts to move away from coal.

The National Energy Administration (NEA) said [on January 5th] that the investment would help create more than 13 million jobs in the industry, Reuters reported.

The planned shift towards wind, solar, hydroelectric and geothermal sources of power comes as Chinese cities, including the capital Beijing, are affected by severe pollution.

The five-year plan follows last month’s announcement by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), which manages the Chinese economy, that 1 trillion yuan ($145 billion) would be invested to increase China’s solar capacity five-fold by 2020.

The NDRC also committed 700 billion yuan ($100 billion) to wind farms, while 500 billion yuan ($73 billion) will go towards hydroelectric and tidal sources of energy.

France has opened what it claims to be the world’s first solar panel road, in a Normandy village.

A 1km route in the small village of Tourouvre-au-Perche covered with 2,800 sq m of electricity-generating panels, was inaugurated last month by the ecology minister, Ségolène Royal.

It cost €5m (£4.2m) to construct and will be used by about 2,000 motorists a day during a two-year test period to establish if it can generate enough energy to power street lighting in the village of 3,400 residents.

Costa Rica went 250 days in 2016 without burning any fossil fuels By David Nield, Science Alert

A round of applause for Costa Rica: the small Central American country ran solely on renewable energy for 250 days of 2016, and over the whole year used renewables for 98.12 percent of its electricity needs.

The republic uses a mixture of renewable sources to generate its electricity including hydro, geothermal, wind, biomass, and solar energy, which meant it didn’t need to touch fossil fuels for two-thirds of the year. The biggest renewable contributor is hydroelectric plants, which account for 74.35 percent of the country’s total electricity needs. CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS

Canada’s largest passive houseBy David Dodge & Dylan Thompson

Vancouver, the self-styled “world’s greenest city” has built Canada’s largest passive house. It’s all part of an effort to [pioneer] a new pathway to zero emission buildings. That’s great because buildings account for 25 per cent of all carbon emissions worldwide.

Vancouver even has a Greenest City Action Plan and is working on a Zero Emissions Housing Plan. Vancouver is a coastal city and Sean Pander, Vancouver’s green buildings manager acknowledges this reality.

But Vancouver isn’t waiting until 2029 to get started. And this is where Scott Kennedy of Cornerstone Architecture comes in. He was designing a new 85-unit building for 8th Avenue Development Group and he proposed to the developer they could save $450,000 on mechanical systems and another $150,000 on natural gas if they built to a passive house standard instead of LEED Gold.

Kennedy instead proposed to spend the money on passive house certified materials such as windows and double R40 walls.

The result is Canada’s largest passive house, an 85 unit building in Vancouver.
