Aubrey Keeling

Aubrey plans to attend WKU after graduating from East. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Raley because her

teaching method is clear and understandable. For fun Aubrey

loves to play outside and enjoy the fresh air. What she likes most about high school is the freedom and the

many interesting people. After college she hopes to become a

dental hygienist.

Teacher Spotlight

Mrs. Ford is a math teacher Warren East High School. This is her 22nd year

teaching at Warren East. She obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree at Murray State University. She is a great teacher and makes a difference in the

lives of students each day.

Educator Spotlight

Officer Waldrop has been at Warren East for 3 years. He loves bass fishing, playing video games,

and playing with his English bulldog, Rudy. He has been in law enforcement for over 20 years. He

is a great contribution to East because of the influence in make in

the lives of others.

The raider basketball team won Saturday in overtime over the

Allen County Patriots 76-67.

They also beat the South Warren Spartans Tuesday 46-45 with

Aaron strange scoring the last point at the buzzer.

This brings their record to 5-0.

The Lady Raiders lost Tuesday to South Warren with a score of 65

to 38.

After an evening of very close bowling the Lady Raiders walked away with a 5-2 victory extending their record to 7-0. The Raiders,

despite playing better this game than the first time THEY played South Warren, still struggled finishing the night with a 1-6 loss. Their record

now stands at 5-2.

The cross-country team is selling Warren East sunglasses. The sporty ones are $15 and the retro are $10. You can order from a cross-country runner or Ms. Henshaw. They

No Pass/No Drive Law:

o Kentucky law states that any 16 or 17 year old student’s permit or drivers

license will be suspended for approximately 6 months if ANY of the

following occurs:

Student has more than 8 absences (this includes out of schools

suspension) within a semester (not year)

Student has not passed at least 5 or 7 classes that the student is

enrolled in per semester (not year)

Student drops out of school

Parent access to Infinite Campus: Parents will need three items in order

to access the student portal. They are the student ID number, student date of

birth, and the Infinite Campus website.

o Log on at

o User name will be the 10 digit student ID#

o Password is the student’s first initial of their first name and first initial of

their last name and your Date of Birth in MMDDYY format. Example –

If you try to access your account more than three times using incorrect student

information, you will be locked out of the IC system. You must email the

following address to have your password reset. It may take up to 72 hours to

process this request. The email address is: [email protected].

ACT

The ACT is a standardized test that measures high school achievement and is used

for college admission and scholarships.

Test Date: Feb. 9, 2013 - (Must register for this online at

http://www.actstudent.org/ by January 11th.)

Cost: $35 (Fee waivers are available for students on free/reduced lunch. A total

of two fee waivers may be used while in high school.) All juniors will take the

ACT free of charge at Warren East High School on March 5, 2013.

FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Anyone

who wants financial aid for college will need to fill out the FAFSA.

The application is used to determine the dollar amount you or your

family will be expected to contribute towards college. All federal

grant and loan awards are determined by the FAFSA, and nearly all

colleges use the FAFSA as the basis for their own financial aid awards

(scholarships).

STUDENTS – On Wednesday, January 9, 2013 a KHEAA counselor

will help you fill out the student portion of the FAFSA in your senior

English class!

College Goal Sunday

On Sunday, January 13, 2013 @ 2 p.m. @ WKU’s Mass Media &

Technology Hall PARENTS can get help filling out the FAFSA.

Your son/daughter does NOT have to attend WKU to get help! All

you have to do is bring your income tax information, and there will be

financial aid counselors to help you fill out the FAFSA.

Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program: Applications for the 2013

Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program require that you have either an ACT

score or a PSAT score. It is recommended that you take the October 17 PSAT

and the October 27 ACT if you intend to apply for the Kentucky Governor’s

Scholars Program. Visit http://gsp.ky.gov for information and 2013 applications.

Completed applications will be due to Mrs. Strickler when we return from

Christmas Break.

Governor’s School for the Arts: Every year 200 of Kentucky's finest

young artists are invited to attend three weeks (June 23 - July 13) of extraordinary

art instruction at the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts on the campus of

Transylvania University in Lexington. It is a free life-changing experience, where

participants meet new friends, explore their creativity, and discover new things.

Interested sophomores and juniors are auditioned in nine different arts

disciplines: architecture, creative writing, dance, drama, instrumental music,

musical theatre, new media, visual art and vocal music. Graduates of the program

are eligible for numerous scholarship opportunities. Interested sophomores or

Applications are due by December 31 and auditions will be held in March, 2013.

Frank Maier Scholarship

Barron Enterprises, Inc. is glad to announce a new $5000 scholarship opportunity for

University of Kentucky Academic Scholarship Program for Freshman

Entering Fall 2013

If you would like to attend the University of Kentucky, there is an informational flyer in

the guidance office that has automatic scholarships and competitive scholarships listed

along with their requirements. Deadline for all automatic academic scholarships is

March 1, 2013. Deadline for competitive academic scholarships is January 15,

Carpenter-Dent Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded to students who have aspirations of becoming a

The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation invites U.S. high school students to write an essay on

an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1956. For contest

AXA Achievement Community Scholarship

The AXA Achievementsm Community Scholarship Program brings advice and access to

higher education into every community in which AXA has a presence. Every AXA

Advisors' branch office nationwide distributes up to twelve $2,000 scholarships to

high school seniors who live and attend high school in their area. APPLY EARLY:

only the first 10,000 applications will be accepted. The application deadline is

February 1, 2013, but if 10,000 applications are received before that date, the

program will automatically close.

National Co-op Scholarship Program

College cooperative education is a unique academic program combining classroom

studies with professional work experience in a field related to your education and career

goals. Co-op gives the student an opportunity to gain professional job experience and at

the same time, earn money to help expenses while you are in school. Co-op positions are

available in fields including: Chemicals & Petroleum, Health Services, Communications,

Hotel and Restaurant Management, Computers & Electronics, Manufacturing, Education,

Media and the Arts, Environmental Services, Public and Private Utilities, Financial

Services, Public Relations, Government, Retail Trade, and Transportation.

Kentucky Association of Business Officials Scholarship

The three $2,500 scholarships given by KASBO (Kentucky Association of School Business

used to be targeted solely for FBLA members; however, this year they are eligible to all high

school students who plan to major in business or education. It is no longer a requirement to be a

member of FBLA. The deadline has always been February 28 of each year; however, this year

Mensa Foundation's College Scholarship Program

The Foundation's college scholarship program bases its awards totally on essays written

by the applicants. Consideration is not given to grades, academic program or financial

BigSun Scholarship

The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to continue to help young athletes succeed in their

Big Brothers/Big Sisters Scholarship

In order to qualify for this scholarship, you must be planning on attending Western Kentucky

University, and you should have been a in our local Big Brother/Big Sister organization for at

least a year (in other words you should have been a little brother or little sister). You will need to

fill out the Beginning Freshman Application for Scholarships for WKU that is within the WKU

scholarship booklet found in the WEHS Guidance Office. Make sure you write “Big Brothers

Big Sisters” on the application to ensure it is flagged to our local organization of Big

Brothers/Big Sisters.

All applicants must:

1. Be full-time students at Western Kentucky University.

2. Be beginning freshmen.

3. Be graduates of a high school in Allen, Barren, or Warren counties.

4. Have been participants (Little Brothers or Little Sisters) in the Big Brothers Big Sisters

of South Central Kentucky program for at least one year (cumulatively).

5. Have a minimum high school GPA of 2.8.

6. Possess the personal qualities of character, integrity, dependability, industriousness and

human compassion which produce leaders and merit the honor of the award.

7. Complete a WKU scholarship application no later than January 15 prior to the
