Introduction Attainment of optimum health is the

desire of every individual. Health of the people is an Index of the level of development of a country. The achievement of a country in preventing disease and promoting health depends upon the contribution of all members of the health team particularly that of nurses, who spent 24 hours around patient side and form a major group.

Back ground of Nursing

With the beginning of the 16th century, women who committed a crime were recruited into NURSING instead of serving jail sentences.

From the middle of the 18th century to the 19th century, Social reforms were changing the roles of NURSES and of women in general. It was during this time that Nursing of today started with the beginning of Florence Nightingale. Who is the MOTHER OF MODERN NURSING.

Page 6: Debre Brehan University- Nursing Program Module

NURSING IN ETHIOPIA MODERN NURSING in Ethiopia started in

Nursing curriculum development and revision has been going on for many years and in different institutions. But changes were not basic; containing irrelevant courses, repetitive contents and fragmented learning that avoids the facilitation and integration of principles from the natural social, public health and medical sciences into nursing practice.

There fore categorization and modularization of courses thought to minimize the previously encountered problems in this specific profession.

Page 13: Debre Brehan University- Nursing Program Module

Consideration taken during categorization and modularization of

courses;

1. Year of the course given.2. Semester of the course given.3. Vertical relation of the course.4. Horizontal relation of the

course. 5. Nature of the course. 6. One Module is given for a

maximum of three semester.

ECTS DescriptionGeneral consideration taken during calculation

of theECTS of each course;

1. The nature of course. ( Whether it is practice oriented or not)

2. The status of course. ( Whether it is common, supportive, optional, major/core/ professional).

3. The numbers of months per semester. ( 5 month per semester)

4. 1 ECTS= 30 hours.5. One semester =5 months=20 Weeks.

Page 51: Debre Brehan University- Nursing Program Module

So based on the above mentioned criteria and by considering other resources that helps to accomplishthe course given per each semester we select the following components of ECTS.

Page 52: Debre Brehan University- Nursing Program Module

Selected Criteria to calculate the ECTS of the

course are: 1. Lecture2. Seminar3. Assignment4. Study(Hom/Lib) 5. Demonstration6. Laboratory7. P roject work8. Exam (mid/final)9. Tutorial10.Practice
