2006-2007 was another growth year for The River School.

Those of us who are guiding the school’s development share

two main priorities: a commitment to young children and

their families, and a commitment to our vibrant and tal-

ented faculty. These two groups are at the heart of the

school and provide a dynamic environment from which the

rest of us learn everyday.

Keeping in mind our dedication to creating an educational

environment that is nurturing, supportive and respectful of

young children, we continued to make improvements to

our program. Our mission statement states our intent to

combine best practices from a variety of disciplines to help

us provide successful educational experiences for children

and to promote clinical research in child language and lit-

eracy. Our efforts during the past year have been consistent

with our mission and have increased the visibility of the

school’s model while continuing to provide rich educational

experiences to the children and families in our school com-

munity.

Some of the initiatives we have engaged in during the past

year have included:

• A second full year of work with our COMPASS consult-

ants to further define our strategic vision

• Year five of our collaboration with Johns Hopkins Hospi-

tal on a multi-center grant funded by the NIH on Child

Development after Cochlear Implantation

• Addition of a full-time specialist in Occupational Therapy,

and a second full-time Art teacher to our faculty

• Joining the Association of Independent Maryland Schools

11(AIMS)

• Hosting international visitors to observe the model in action

• Training graduate students and interns from seven area

universities,

• Launch of our new website (a pro bono donation by

11BrowserMedia)

• Expanding River REACH to offer clinical services in Audi-

ology, Occupational Therapy and Psycho-educational As-

sessment

The school’s dedication to faculty is evidenced in the

competitive salary and benefit package we offer, in our

continuing commitment to providing on site childcare for

faculty children so that our faculty can come to work

knowing their babies will be nurtured and well cared for,

and tuition remission for those faculty children enrolled in

The River School program. We also made a significantly

higher investment in professional development opportuni-

ties for faculty this year with the generous support of

donors who dedicated grant monies for this purpose.

We look forward to continuing to refine our program while

keeping our focus firmly on the children and their develop-

ment. Thank you for your participation in the life of our

school, your support of the children and teachers, and your

generous gifts to The River School that make it all possible.

I want to express my sincere appreciation to the contribu-

tors listed in this report for their support of The River

School’s program and facilities. Through the kindness and

generosity of the families and friends of The River School,

we fulfilled our goals, generating the needed funds to make

2006-2007 another successful school year.

Last year fundraising at The River School reached an all-

time high, allowing us to address specific areas of need and

ensure that we continue to live up to our mission. Dona-

tions to the Annual Fund supported the operating budget

and helped fund:

Increased opportunities for professional development for

our staff—a key component for retention and further en-

hancing the quality of River School instruction,

• Installation of sound field systems in every classroom, im-

proving the clarity and focus of the classroom soundscape,

• Further expansion of the math curriculum employing

teaching tools and resources that exceed contemporary

standards, and,

• Additional staff positions for our finance and develop-

ment functions.

In addition to the Annual Fund, significant funds were

raised to address program priorities. The River School’s

scholarship fund was dramatically bolstered by generous

foundation and family grants, as well as by the auction

which raised $242,000. We also completed the Rooftop

Playground, greatly expanding our outdoor play area. There

was broad support for this project, but it was the excep-

tional generosity of a few families that made the play-

ground a reality.

I have been involved with The River School since its incep-

tion and am pleased to now serve as Chair of The River

School Board of Directors. As you may know, The River

School started out in 2000 with just a handful of children,

using about one third of our current space. Since then the

school has experienced phenomenal growth, much of it on

a shoe string budget and a modest administrative structure

that rapidly faced the task of addressing the needs of over

200 children.

The River School’s mission focuses on providing a diverse

educational experience that fully immerses children in the

richness of language. And not just language as it applies to

conventional school curricula, but to a range of real world

experiences. A vast collection of language-rich activities

extends our children’s psychosocial outlook and critical

thinking, empowering them to understand a complex world

that surrounds them and to share their thoughts on that

world as only they can. With this approach, The River

School has generated a winning model that has trans-

formed early education in our region.

The River School is not just a place, but a remarkable experience

generated by people who believe in the power and possibilities

of our children. Thank you for enriching that experience.

PROFILES

AGNES AND MICHAEL HEISLEY

Michael and Agnes Heisley, grandparents of Emma, Libby and

Daisy Bishop, and parents of River School Mom, Judy Bishop sur-

prised The River School community by making an extremely gen-

erous gift to inspire our community to complete the proposed

rooftop playground project. In June 2006, Mr. Heisley participated

in The River School’s first golf tournament. After a day of golf, Mr.

Heisley pledged $100,000 for the Rooftop Playground. The gift

was established as a dollar for dollar challenge for The River

School community to raise an additional $100,000 for the project.

The challenge was met and more than $300,000 was raised to

fund the equipment and installation. Through their thoughtful

generosity, the Heisleys provided a tremendous gift of financial

support, as well as an incentive to other donors to join the effort

to bring the project to fruition. The Rooftop Playground is now an

integral part of each day at The River School.

Transformational gifts such as these have left an indelible mark

on The River School. The Heisleys and the Cedar Hill Foundation

stepped forward at a critical time for the school and enabled it to

achieve its goals and dreams.

If a school is lucky, a donor comes along who helps transform its program or facilities.

The River School was very fortunate in 2006-2007 to receive two such gifts.

CEDAR HILLFOUNDATION

In 1999, Mary Carpenter, Washing-

ton journalist, current River School

board member, and long time

friend of River School founder,

Nancy Mellon became a founding

supporter of The River School. Over

the years she maintained a close

friendship with Nancy and an in-

terest in The River School’s devel-

opment. In previous years, Mary’s

family foundation, the Cedar Hill

Foundation, provided generous

grants to The River School for

scholarship and teacher training

projects. Last year, Mary facilitated

a grant from the Cedar Hill Foun-

dation that provided a landmark

$150,000 to The River School

Scholarship Fund. This grant al-

lowed the school to provide 30%

more scholarship dollars than ever

before. Cedar Hill Foundation des-

ignated the scholarship dollars for

children with hearing loss under

three years old. This generous grant

met all of the scholarship needs for

this group of children for the

2006-2007 school-year.
