Dear friends,Happy Anniversary! I am so pleased to be able to celebrate with

you our tenth anniversary season. Anniversaries shape our sense ofwho we are, allowing us to reflect on our experiences with the benefitof hindsight, considering how far we have come and what we havelearned. We know the influence and performance of choral music isgrowing in Orange County and the de Angelis Vocal Ensemble is lead-ing the way with our innovative and inspiring concerts. For the pastnine seasons our non-profit organization has presented programs thatprovide our community with the rich cultural wealth choral music of-fers. This year, our tenth season, promises to do that much and more.

Our subscription season begins with Mission Music a programthat serves as both inaugural concert for the tenth season and intro-duction to our musical education outreach program. Mission Music ex-plores the vocal traditions of the unique and rich cultural heritage ofthe Historic Missions of California. Joining de Angelis will be fourthgrade children from Newport Mesa Unified School District - DavisElementary School, the first partners in our exciting new Mission Musicin Schools outreach pilot. In December, we celebrate the beginning ofthe holiday season with our Christmas – Past and Present program thatblends music from our past nine Christmas concerts. Our March pro-gram is a unique combination of American folksongs and Negro Spir-ituals; a concert grounded in our distinctive American heritage. deAngelis’ final tenth season program, Masters of the Classics, is a choralblockbuster, performed with period-instrument orchestra, lauding thetalents of George Frederick Handel and Franz Joseph Haydn.We are eager to enjoy the culmination of ten years of choral musicwith you and our anniversary gift is a season of beauty and joy. Enjoy an afternoon of music of the California Missions with the deAngelis Vocal Ensemble. From the native tunes and movements ofthe Juaneño peoples who populated our coast, to the earthy regi-mental songs from the soldiers barracks, to the refined music of theSpaniards who colonized San Juan Capistrano to the hauntinglybeautiful music of the Franciscan padres, the inaugural concert ofour tenth season explores vocal traditions that celebrate the uniqueand rich cultural heritage of the Historic Missions of California.Joining de Angelis will be fourth grade children from NMUSD DavisElementary School, the first partners in our exciting new MissionMusic in Schools outreach pilot.

The parade of favorites will include car-ols from across the world, jazz, carols and modern classics, a festiveand humble combination of traditional and contemporary Christmasmusic. Something for everyone in this very merry concert performedin the acoustical gem of the Mission Basilica San Juan! As in pastyears, de Angelis will donate unwrapped toys to a local charity, thisseason to Serra’s Pantry. Children who bring these toys to the concertwill be our guests, admi!ed gratis; adults who bring toys will begiven $5 off their admission.

Experience an evening of emotionally impactful American music asde Angelis presents 20th century interpretations of the secular andsacred songs that pervade the early eras of our history. We will per-form deeply evocative, comforting music you have known all of yourlife, the structures and rhythms and rich harmonies of which havelasted for over a century and that infuse many of our current musi-cal forms. The finale for our tenth season contrasts one of the earliest works ofBaroque master George Friederich Handel and one of the late mas-terpieces of Classical genius Franz Joseph Haydn. The de Angelissingers will present these works accompanied by a period-instru-ment orchestra. Handel was a well-traveled young man whoworked in an international style developed through his exposure tomany artistic contemporaries. Dixit Domius, composed under thepatronage of Cardinal Carlo Colonna from Santa Maria de MonteSanto, is one of the brilliant works of the Baroque. Haydn spent agreat deal of his professional life working for the Esterházy court inrelative artistic isolation in Hungary where he composed music foropera, plays, even puppet shows. When he finally began travelingand performing abroad, he gained a huge international audience andit is in this late period he wrote the Lord Nelson Mass, a broad, beau-tiful capstone to his creative life.

The de Angelis Board of Directors, in conjunction with generousgrants from Phil and Mary Lyons and the Orange County Com-munity Foundation, are proud to present a comprehensive musiceducation program for Orange County fourth graders.

The program "Music of New Spain: Exploring California’s Mis-sions” is crafted specially for Orange County fourth graderswhose curriculum includes the study of California missions.While educating and benefi!ing fourth graders, the programwill appeal to many audiences as it will coincide with de Ange-lis’ October 25, 2014 performance, Mission Music to be presentedat Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano.

Student audiences will learn what musical life in the New Worldmight have been like by learning and performing works foundin archives from California missions and Mexican Cathedrals.The musical time period spans about 200 years, from the Ren-aissance to early Classical and includes works from some of thefirst American-born composers. The integrated approach to thisprogram will draw from the Social Studies, Visual and Perform-ing Arts and English Language Arts disciplines.
