DOD MISSION

Support a NASA Led Orbiter Recovery from a Contingency Landing Site

(also Called a “Turnaround Operation”)• Provide Airlift and Sealift • Provide Bare Base Assets and Services

– Latrines, GP Shelters (9), Aircraft hangars (2), AM-2 matting– Power, GSE, vehicles, Air conditioning, communications

• Personnel and Equipment provided as available and without adversely impacting primary mission• All logistics support provided on a reimbursable basis

KEY ASSUMPTIONS

• Permissive Environment• No Competing Military Actions• NASA Equipment Readily Deployable• Int’l Agreements Remain Valid• Landing Site Ready to Receive Deployment Flow• NASA will make maximum use of host nation

support, local contracts, and commercial services

DDMS SPACE SHUTTLE OPERATIONS

• Initial Response (3610)– Locate/Search

– Rescue

– Deploy RRT/MIT

– Safe Orbiter/Secure Scene

• Recovery Operations (3611)– Requirements (PRD, RMT, MMT)

– Determine COA/Plan (FuncPlan 3611)

– Execute

HISTORY

• STS-3 Turnaround at WSSH in 1982– Stateside Operation Utilizing Rail and road

Transportation

– Augmented Site with In-Place Cool/Purge Units and Fixed Crane for Mating

• An Overseas Turnaround has Never Been Tested!• Renewed Interest within NASA, USA, and DDMS

• The DOD Manager (COMSTRAT), Manned Space Flight Support Operations, is the Supported Commander

• JTF-DDMS has TACON of Deployed DOD Forces
