lives inTampa, trekkedacrossthe state. She said attendingwasn’t always easy at first.“It took me a while,” Millersaid. “In the beginning, I justdidn’t feel like it.”Somanypeople—survivors

womenand2,500menwill benewly diagnosed with breastcancer this year, accordingestimates by the AmericanCancer Society. But deathrates from the disease hasfallen dramatically in thelast decade and a half due toimprovements in treatmentand early detection.Cities across the country

and research, said LeslieCastillo, the unit executivedirector of the AmericanCancer Society in DaytonaBeach. Organizers raisedmore than $230,000.“It really does show how

our community comestogether to help one another

and how much they reallycare about the work thatwe’re doing,” Castillo said.“Every year, we’re seeing anincrease in our survival rates.It’s something tobeproudof;the work that we’re doing isshowing in the number ofsurvivors.”In 2000, when the disease

crept into the life of JeanMoore, she had the “littlelump” in her left breastremoved. But in March, shewasdiagnosed again after thedoctor saw “something thatwasn’t toogood,” andhadherright breast removed in June.
