Thank you!

Hosting a reading series is a lot like baking a cake. You need the right mix of tools, ingredients, and patience – or risk going up in smoke. So it’s with no small grain of salt that we are positively thrilled that Kama continues to achieve this delicious mix after 20 years. Thanks to our ingredients – authors, supporters, sponsors, and volunteers – we’ve raised over $2 million over the years to help provide hope and deliver change here at home and overseas.

Some of you have been attending and supporting Kama since it began, you are family and we thank you for keeping Kama alive. We continue to welcome many newcomers to our cause, and we thank each and every one of you for your support.

We are deeply grateful to the over 250 authors who have spoken and lent their names in supporting our cause and organization. Together, we’ve made a real, tangible difference in the lives of thousands of women, children, and their families.

Some Kama sponsors have stood by us for 20 years, and others have joined us over the years to celebrate the pleasure of reading, writing and living with books. We thank our sponsors for their generous support.

Our cake may have turned out well, but it’s only the first layer. Your attendance tonight is our building block for the future. Thank you, and enjoy the show.

James loney

Ava Homa is Canada’s answer to Raymond Carver. Homa announces new beginnings—less irony, more hope—and from a breathtakingly multicultural and international perspective. Readers will experience awe and beauty at the force of Homa’s art to convey female Iranian protagonists wholeheartedly grasping their lives. Rich, dramatic tensions build just beneath the surface—which will surprise and captivate readers.

James Loney is a Canadian peace activist, writer and member of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT). Based in Toronto, he has served on violence-reduction teams in Iraq, Palestine and First Nations communities in Canada. In November 2005, he was kidnapped along with the CPT delegation he was leading and held hostage for four months. Loney will read from Captivity, a full-length account of his ordeal.

marina nematAfter the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Marina Nemat was arrested at the age of sixteen and spent more than two years in a political prison in Tehran, where she was tortured and came very close to execution. She came to Canada in 1991 and has called it home ever since. Her memoir, Prisoner of Tehran, is an international bestseller. She recently published her second book, After Tehran: A Life Reclaimed.
