Dear Parent/Carers As you will see from our newsletter, it has once again been a busy term at Longfield. Our Middle Years Programme in year 7 has seen students busily reflecting on their learner attributes, making strong links across subjects and beginning to understand what it means to be an IB Learner. It has been lovely to see! Working alongside parents is incredibly important to ensure that students are well supported and understand that we are all working as a team for their benefit. It has been really pleasing to see the attendance at parent consultation events has been the highest we have ever had - with one year group having over 94% parent attendance! We only have year 7 consultation evening remaining in May and look forward to beating the 94%! Similarly our parent forum has been instrumental in feeding back views on some of the changes we have made this year. It is great that parent support for the mobile ban has been so strong. Now that Spring has leapt forward into the weather, it is important that we maintain the high standards of uniform. Whilst I appreciate that the end of the academic year may well be slightly closer into focus, please ensure that uniform, and in particular, shoes, are replenished rather than waiting until the summer. We often get comments from the public and visitors to the academy about the smartness of the uniform, and so I would like to ensure these high expectations are maintain all the way through to July. I am pleased that we have had a vast reduction in the number of acrylic/painted nails - thank you for this support. As always, can I remind parents to be considerate of our neighbours when collecting your children. As recommended in previous newsletters, if you could arrange to pick your child up from further afield, it will alleviate parking pressures but also encourage healthy active lifestyles in taking a 10 minute walk to your meeting place. And finally...I am sure you will agree that the staff have worked tirelessly this term to support your child - from teaching staff to site team, admin ladies to Heads of College. Our staff recognition scheme is a free but effective way to show your appreciation. Please look on our website to find details - I know that those staff that have been nominated by you have been touched by the comments. I hope you enjoy the newsletter and see how busy we have been this term. Kind regards and best wishes for holiday. Here at Longfield Academy, our A Level IT students are currently studying the OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma in IT. As part of their course they are required to have engagement with employers during their study. On 26th February, our students were privileged to receive a project management masterclass from industry expert Paul Gray. Paul has a wealth of knowledge in this field with over 25 years operating within Project Managerment. Paul currently works for himself as a contractor through his own company and is currently working for Lloyds Banking Group (in Bristol) on an OD Programme, which is a data led project. Prior to working for himself, he did consultancy work for a resources and operations organisation with a £30m annual budget.

The students really benefitted from seeing a “real world” industry expert discussing the various stages of a project life cycle, and the various methodologies used to manage projects. It is increasingly difficult for people in industry to take time out of their busy schedules to visit schools and therefore our students really benefitted from someone talking about how it really works in industry, rather than than in the classroom. We look forward to working with Paul again in the future and involving him more with our programmes of study.

Legally Blonde Jr, March 2019 at

Longfield Academy

Legally Blonde is a show that prides itself on being fun,

high-energy, (very pink) and a full-on celebration of how

working hard always pays off in the end. That’s not just

the case with the music and script; it is a testament to

the cast and crew who put it together.

Much like the 2001 film, the story tells of Californian Sorority Girl, Elle Woods

(played by year 10 student Sasha), getting into Harvard Law in order to pursue

the boyfriend who dumped her because she wasn’t “serious” enough. With the

help of her friends, Elle goes on to not only win over her professors, classmates

and her ex boyfriend, (Warner) but also stands up for herself in the face of

criticism and unfair prejudice.

Everyone came out of the theatre on Thursday and Friday night with a smile on

their face. Not only was the show everything it promised to be, but the talent

and professionalism of the every single member of the cast was something that

hadn’t been seen on this scale before. Legally Blonde Junior welcomed the

largest and youngest cast ever to grace the Longfield Academy stage, and it absolutely paid off. The energy and enthusiasm of

the Delta Nu Sorority girls was something that was particularly impressive, and the stage came alive every time they entered the

stage. Additionally, the large chorus numbers were punctuated by individual characters, making Harvard Law students seem far

from boring.

I could go on forever about every single person in the cast, because everyone

stood out; Elle’s 3 best friends (Taylor and Daisy year 9, Jade, year 13) were

sassy, funny and supportive, Emmett (James, year 10) was the perfect bumbling

love interest, Warner (Alfie, year 9) was suave and the best under-the-thumb

boyfriend of Vivienne (Katelyn, year 9). Paulette (Shania, year 9) was sweet and

believably unfortunate in love. But these are just a few of the performances

that made the show a standard above all others.

It goes without saying that the part of Elle was a role Sasha was born to play.

There was never a point where the audience felt like they were anything but in

safe hands with her and is has been wonderful to watch her grow into a star

over the last few years, as is the case with everyone in the cast.

A special mention has to go to the four-legged cast members, Willow (Bruiser) and Hugo (Rufus) who stole every scene they

were in, and who proved that it is just about possible to work with children and animals.

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to three of our long-time performers, Olivia, Megan and Jade, who leave Longfield

at the end of the year. These girls have played a part in almost every single production and their growth as performers has been

phenomenal. We wish them all the luck in the future.

A huge thank you to all cast and crew involved in bringing the show together.

The next production by the Performing Arts department will be Shakespeare Shorts in July 2019.

Arts Careers Convention

Monologue Slam

Big Bang!

On Thursday 7th March Longfield

Academy held the annual World Book Day

event.

It is always great to see so many staff

members dress up as various book

characters such as Harry Potter, cowboys,

Snow White and poetry characters.

We can’t wait to see what next year has

to offer!

On the 18th of March the Expressive Arts Department were lucky enough to host a number of professionals from the Arts industustries and from various universities. They came to speak to our creative year 8s about possible career paths in the art world, as well as a little bit about their own work. They also had a chance to speak to KS4 and 5 students after school, and every student was enthusiastic about what they learned and the people they met. A particular delight was being joined by Matthew Gale, Olivier award winning producer of The Railway Children.

We are hoping to run a similar event next year in January.

We are incredibly excited to have six finalists going through the Leigh Academies Trust Monologue Slam at Strood Academy on Thursday 4th of April. The finalists, made up of year 9 and 10 students, will have to perform a monologue of their choice from a published play in front of a panel of judges who are all industry professionals. First prize is £100 worth of theatre vouchers.

On Friday 1st March we took 15 Year 8 Students to Discovery Park in Sandwich

for the, ‘Big Bang’ workshop and STEM event. The students carried out an

investigation to uncover a mystery chemical substance, controlled a robot with

their mind and took part in an interactive session about the elements of the

periodic table which finished off with a number of explosions. The event also

enabled the students to speak with a large range to professionals from STEM

careers and interact with their stalls.

There were so many stalls to get involved with but from the conversations on

the way home a large number of them really enjoyed the CPR simulation in an

ambulance and having a go at placing a tube down the throat of a dummy, using

their maths skills to crack the code of a safe, constructing a bridge out of sticks

with the Royal engineers, building antigens out of balloons with Pfizer and

looking at the engineering behind a robot. The students were extremely well

behaved and a credit to Longfield and this was regularly commented on by the

organisers and professionals throughout the day.

Year 9 Visit to Ypres

Two coaches of Year 9 students visited Ypres in Belgium on the 22nd March as part of their First World War studies. We left at 6.30 a.m and returned at midnight. The students had a great day out. Students tunnelled under the woods at Hill 62 and walked through the muddy trenches. They then visited Tyne Cot cemetery and paid their respects to the fallen soldiers by signing their names in the book of condolence. Students were shown the contrast at the smaller, darker, German Langemark cemetery. The Menin Gate was visited in the town centre, which contains over 50,000 names of soldiers whose bodies were never found. The day was completed in the traditional way, through the purchasing of the delicious Belgium chocolates. Mr Chambers

Year 10 Drama students

Year 10 drama students braved the London Underground to see the The Woman in Black as part of their GCSE exam

course. They were an absolute credit to the school; perfectly behaved in every aspect of our journey, even on the

District Line at rush hour! They loved the play and they were by far the best behaved school in the audience, despite

all the screams and whimpering.

Madrid Trip 2019

First day : Miércoles el seis de marzo We began our first day in Madrid with the unique, once in a lifetime experience of being able to meet the pilot and see the cockpit of the plane. However, when we got off the plane it was raining, so, unfortunately we could not do the walking tour of the city as originally planned. We went for lunch, some of us experimenting and trying new foods and then went shopping at Plaza Rio 2. In the afternoon the sun had come out and we explored the Plaza Mayor before ending the long day by walking back to the hotel.

Second day : Jueves el siete de marzo We started our second day with a trip on the metro to visit the Santiago Bernabéu, (home of Real Madrid F.C,one of the most successful football clubs in Europe) for a tour of the stadium . Miss R B in the spirit of world book day dressed as ‘Where’s Wally’ for the occasion. We were blown away by the sheer magnitude of the football ground and were able to take a look at the changing rooms as well as go down to the pitch and gaze at their vast number of trophies. There was also a replica of the teams tour bus which we all had a virtual trip on, allowing us to see what it’s really like for the players when they depart from the stadium. It truly was a unique experience and one I will remember always. When our tour had finished, we hopped back on the metro and headed to our next stop, The Ventas Bullring. We arrived an hour before our tour, and went to get some food (our group enjoyed some ginormous churros) before having a look around the area and having some ice cream before going in. The bull ring was spectacular inside and out , the tour started at the joint entrance and exit of the building which was also served as the main gate to the ring. Our tour guide told us all about the history of the building and gave us many interesting facts about the bull fighters that have been there ( a fact that I thought was particularly interesting is that there has only ever been one bull to return to the farm it came from ). Our tour then continued to the inside of the building, the amazing arches let lots of natural light in and we saw the place where the actual bullfighting takes place. There was also a small museum which displays all the swords, costumes and bull horns from all the previous fights. Including the costume of the smallest and youngest fighter to be killed by a bull, there is a memorial and a statue outside the bull ring in memory of this fighter. We finished off the long day by walking back to the restaurant before chilling out at the hotel!

Page 11: Dates for the diary - Longfield Academylongfieldacademy.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/April-newsletter.pdf · Morgan Eddie Olayinka Catherina Parrish Marage Lara Quinn Tadey Henry

Third day : Viernes el ocho de marzo Our third and final full day began with us exploring El museo del Prado, which was especially special for the art students, many of whom took inspiration from the work. We were also lucky enough to have audio guides so as well as being able to see the clear beauty in the art, we could also understand the history behind it. After we had finished exploring the museum, (and of course looking in the gift shop) we then headed to our next location El Parque del Buen Retiro, (a humongous park on the outskirts of the city) where we grabbed lunch and enjoyed the sights. However while most of us relaxed and enjoyed the last of the sun, Mr Mortleman led an exercise class on the grass per the request of some of the students. After we had all finished in the park, we were given some more free time, in which we witnessed protests that were taking place in honour of national women's day. This really helped us to get a feel for the Spanish culture and how passionate the people are. As the long day drew to a close, we went to have dinner in the Hard Rock Café, where we all enjoyed delicious food, such as burgers. To conclude the evening we all went on a long walk to bowling and enjoyed a game against each other, before heading home to pack and prepare to go home the following day.

Fourth day : Sábado el nueve de marzo We began our final morning in Madrid by heading over to the Cortes District where we had flamenco lessons. Despite the woman being an hour late, when she did arrive, we all quickly began to have fun with everyone getting involved (including Miss Roman~Blencoe who had a sore back and feet from all of the walking). Towards the end of the lesson, once we had all learnt some new dance moves, Mr Mortleman and Renee got on the stage to show us their interpretation of the dance. ¡Que risa! Later we went to the San Miguel market, who’s history dates back to 1916, which despite being extremely busy, was a great experience as it was filled to the brim with lots of different types of original Spanish cuisine (such as Tapas) made locally. It was also amazing as the smells of all different foods overwhelmed the sense leaving a lasting memory. To conclude our last day the teachers bought us another Spanish delicacy, churros con chocolate at San Gines, a famous family run bakers in the centre, which we enjoyed before heading home.

Day 1– Dan, for forgetting to put the

luggage tag on his case at the bag

drop and almost losing his passport

though security.

Day 2 – Lennie, for climbing into a

childrens swing and getting stuck!

Day 3 – Mrs Higson for sitting on a

‘step’ that wasn’t there and falling flat

on her backside!

Judo Championships Sporting Achievements

Longfield vs Strood

On 16th March Henry Ripley went to Sheffield

to compete in the British Schools Judo

Championships 2019 (representing Longfield

Academy) where he won the gold medal. It was

a very tough day of fighting with the weigh in

taking place at 10am and the gold medal fight

not starting until 5.30pm. Henry is currently

ranked 5th in the UK which will see him

selected for the GB training camp taking place

in June. If he is successful he will then be

selected to represent team GB internationally.

On Thursday 21st March the year 7 and

year 10 netball teams went to Strood

Academy to play them. Once we found the

netball courts the games soon got under

way!

Both teams played at the same time but the

teams got together at quarter time to

support each other. Both teams played

brilliantly with the year 7s winning 7-4 and

the year 10s ran away with it and won 22-5.

Well done to everyone who played. Let’s

hope it continues next year when we go

away for our tournament in October.

Marathons The PE Department would like to wish Mr Powell the best of luck in running the Brighton Marathon on 14th April and the London Marathon on 28th April. We are looking forward to hearing how well he does in both of these events after months of hard work and training.

Longfield Academy cheer team took part in Alpha and Omega Cheerleading, (at the Copper Box in the Olympic park, London) in February. They have been meeting and practicing with Coach Poppy, (from our satellite club Intensity Cheer extreme) every Wednesday after school. Cheerleading is a mix of gymnastics, dance, tumbling, jumps and lifts and performed to music. For most of the girls in the team, this was their first competition and they did the Academy Proud with a really high scoring routine. The girls were also awarded a trophy for an excellent performance. If you would like to come and try cheerleading out then come along on Wednesday after school 2 - 3pm. You do not have to have done any cheerleading before to join the team.

There are times when pupils get ill or injured, this can not be helped, but there is always an opportunity for pupils to get involved in some way in the pe lesson. For this reason all pupils need to bring in their kit and change for their pe lesson. After they are changed if they have a note this is to be given to their teacher explaining their illness or injury. Pupils who do not have their kit will receive a detention. Notes telling PE staff that they will not be changing will not be accepted, as this is a fundamental rule of the PE department. If a pupil forgets their kit they will be expected to change into the cleaned spare kit that is available from Mrs Davies Office. This kit is always washed after if has been used and pupils will not be expected or made to change into dirty kit. The standard of the PE kit being worn in lessons

have decreased over the year with many pupils wearing what they want, this is not acceptable. Please take this opportunity over the Easter holiday to ensure that your son/ daughter has the full correct PE kit, ( this is available on the academy website). Please note that items worn that are not academy kit will not be allowed and sanctions will be put in place.

Austria Ski trip 2019 After an uneventful 22 hour coach trip we finally arrived in Altenmarkt in Austria and that’s when the fun really began. We hit the slopes and lots of people found out that the slopes can hit back! Especially Mr Bird, I think his technique was the tuck and roll.

As well as skiing during the day we had evening activities including pizza night and ice cream night. Each evening we nominated a Doughnut of the Day which was awarded for things like skiing straight into a pole, falling over whilst standing still and breaking ski poles on the chair lift.

Although we didn’t all come back in one piece, we all had an amazing and fun time and we can’t wait for the next one to Boston, Massachusetts! A massive thank you to Mrs O’Sullivan, Mr Bird, Miss Martines, Miss Roman-Blencoe and Mr Soulsby for helping run a successful trip.

Everything really is awesome… Year 10 Computer Science students at Longfield Academy were treated to a webinar from an award winning industry specialist from Lego. Jude Pullen, who is a Senior Technology Scout and Direction Design Manager for Lego took time out of his busy schedule to talk to our students about his role within the company. Streaming live from his office in London, Jude reflected on his career path and the choices that he made as a student which has led him to working for one of the world’s leading international companies. Students were given the chance to ask Jude questions about his role and qualifications and this is certainly something that our students relished. Working in a school it can be difficult to establish employer engagement, but we hope that this is the start of an ongoing drive to bridge the gap between industry and education. For more information about Jude and his accomplishments, you can visit his website: http://www.judepullen.com/

The Telescope Bistro

The catering students have had an industrious term, with our training restaurant, ‘The Telescope’, fully booked through February and March. We have finished this term with an “Easter” afternoon tea, which was also a great success. Both students and guests enjoyed themselves with a different unique take on an afternoon tea.

The Students also went to a “Institute of Hospitality Exhibition” in London giving them the opportunity to speak to professionals in the industry about career choices and opportunities.

We offer a fine dining experience which is open to members of the public on Thursday and Friday lunch time, term time only. Comments from recent visitors sums up the experience we offer, here at Longfield:

“Service, quality of food excellent. Difficult to improve.”

“Quality of food and appearance amazing, restaurant setting surprisingly elegant and all staff are very friendly”
