LastweekendwastheturnoftheU9s,U10,U11sandU12stotakepartinLetchworthFestival.Allofouragegroupsgaveagreataccountofthem-selvesandenjoyedanexcellentmorningofcompetitiveRugby.ThiscomingSaturdaywewishourU11sthebestofluckastheytakepartintheLandRoverCupatAllianzParkbeforetheSaracensVSalegameandthenonSundaywelookforwardtowelcomingLeightonBuzzardtoDatchworth.TheClubwillbeverybusyonSundaymorningandifanyDatchworthparentscancarsharethisweekenditwouldbeverymuchappreciatedtohelpmanagethelargenumberofpeopleweareexpectingtoseeattheClub.Thestoryoflastweekendistoldbelow!

U6TrainingatDatchworth

Thisweekthesunwasshiningonceagainandwehadagreatturnoutinbothagegroups.TheU6'ssplitoffintogroupsof5/6toconcentrateoncoreskills,passing,runningwiththeballandscoringtries(stayingontheirfeet).WelldonetoTimSwhowonourplayeroftheweek.

U7TrainingatDatchworth

TheU7'splayedanumberofskillsgamesincluding'TigThief','Rats&Rabbits','SupportPassing',thenfinishingwithsomeminitaggamestofinishinreadinessforLeightonBuzzard.

U9LetchworthFestivalReport

Todaytheteamsgotstuckintotheirfirsttasteofcompetitivecontactrugby.Wejustmanagedtofieldtwoteams,takingonteamsfromRoyston,Welwyn,Hitchin,Letchworth,StevenageandTabard.Inallthegamesthewholeteamreallypulledtogether,whichisparticularlyimpressivegivenbothteamshadseveralnewerplayerssoaparticularwelldonetoLucien,Reece,MateoandOliverG.

Therewassomeexcellenttacklinggoinginmostofthetimeandreallyimprovedteamsupportforourstrongerrunners. Thegreenteaminpool1managedtowin3,draw1andlost1notablyincludingbeatingWelwyn6-3,Letchworth6-4andawhitewashoverStevenage6-0.TheydrewwithRoyston4-4andonlylostouttoHitchin2-3.Theblueteaminpool2heldtheirownagainstsomereallystrongteamsinpool2,drawingwithRoyston2-2,beatingLetchworth3-2butlosingouttoTabard1-3andHitchin2-4.



Wedidn'tawardaplayeroftheweekgivenwewereallsopleasedthatthewholesquadpulledtogethertoputingreatallroundperformances.

Itwasreallyimpressivetoseethefruitofafewweekstrainingandeveryoneshowedexcellentdeterminationandteamspirit,includingtwowinsoverthehosts.Welldoneeveryone!U10LetchworthFestivalReportTheU10ssplitdownintotwomixedabilitysquadsfortheseasonopeningLetchworthFestival,Pool1includedteamsfromLetchworth,Welwyn,StAlbans,HitchinandRoyston.

ItwasatoughmorningforourPool1sidebuttheresultsonlytellpartofthestory;formanyinthePool1sidethiswastheirfirsttasteoftournamentrugbyanditwasafantasticlearningexperienceenjoyedbyall.Anumberofplayersreallystoodoutontheday,DamianMurphyscoredtwoexcellenttries,GeorgeReillygrabbedatryonhiscompetitivedebut,andMcKenziewentoverforfourtriesoverthecourseofthemorning.BeyondtheTryscoringanumberofplayersmadeanoutstandingcontributiontotheteamthroughoutthemorning,WilliamPainewastenaciousatthebreakdown,ThomasMoore

TheU11sstartedtheirseasonwiththreepoolmatchesagainstTabard,HitchinandStAlbans.

TabardprovedtobeverytoughcustomersandtheDatchworthdefencewasn'tresponsiveenoughtokeepthematbay.OutflankedseveraltimesDatchworthjustcouldn'tstopthespeedyTabardwingersfromscoringoutwide.Tabard3Datchworth0.

HitchinwerejustasstrongbutDatchworthwerelearningtheirlessonandthedefencewasmuchbetterinthissecondgame.SomerobustruckingandslickhandskeptDatchworthinitforawell-earneddraw.Hitchin2Datchworth2.

ItwasyetanotherbeautifulmorningforrugbyasweheadedtoLetchworthforthisyear’sNorthHertsFestival.PreviousyearshadseenuscrownedwinnersatUnder10’sin2013,andrunnersupatUnder11’sin2014,sowewerehopefulofastrongperformanceonceagainthisyear.

FirstupforusthisyearwasTabard,anditprovedatightgame.Ourpassingdrillsshonethroughwithsomelovelyfreeflowingrugbyondisplaywiththeballbeingdeliveredwellfromthebreakdown,andspreaddownthelineexcellently.TheyresultedinsomewellworkedtriesfromSamWhitbyandJoshuaStaddon,butbreakawaytriesfromTabardineachhalfmeantweultimatelydrewthegame10-10.

Secondgameupaftera30minutebreakwasagainstHitchin1.Afteroneparticularlad’spassportwascheckedsincehelookedoldenoughandbigenoughtobesomeofourboys’Uncle,thegamegotunderway!AgreatrunbyJoshuaStaddonpracticallytheentirelengthofthepitchwasunfortunatenottoleadtoatryduetoalastminuteexcellentcovertacklefromHitchin’slastmanstanding.Onceagaintherewassomegreatpassagesofplayfromourboys,andsomenotabledefensivetacklesweremadebyMatthewRates,SpencerBayfordandSamWhitbytonameafew.15-10down,wewereheadingatleastforadrawasWilliamFieldraceddowntheleftwing,onlytobe



tackleddangerouslyhighfrombehindtodenyhimhisreward.Apenaltytrywasforsomereasonnotawarded;ultimatelymeaningwehadtoaccepta10-15loss.

OurfinalgameofthemorningwasagainstthehostsLetchworth,onlytheyforoneweredeterminedNOTtomakeanearlyexitfromtheirowntournament.Runningin2triesearlyoninthefirsthalf,theyseemedtobebuildingupforabigfinalgame,butourboysdugdeepindefenceandplayedouttherestofthegamewithoutlettingLetchworthputanymorepointsontheboard.AgainsomeexcellenttacklingfrommanyboysincludingnewrecruitDanielDickinson,MaxOates,WilliamFieldandJoshuaHigginsstoppedtherot,andwewereunfortunatenottogetpointsontheboardafterastormingrundowntherightwingbySamWhitby,whohandedofftackleaftertackleonhiswaytowardstheline,onlytobethwartedatthedeathbybeingbumpedintotouch.Acloselyfoughtsecondhalfintheend,whichsadlyresultedina10-0lossforourboys.
