EXCEL ACCESS Open up Microsoft Excel (in the Unified Desktop Common Apps box)

Click on Add-ins > Datastream and choose either

(i) Static Request (for data from one specific date) (ii) Time Series Request (for data over a time period). This is more usual.

SAMPLE SEARCHES: EQUITIES (COMPANIES)

Search for Time Series data on one company e.g Admiral: market value.

1. In Excel, select Times Series Data from the Datastream Add-ins menu

2. In order to find the correct code for a company (known as a mnemonic) click on Find Series. Search for Admiral.

3. Results screen: Maximize the screen. Select the correct company by clicking on the title. Tip: Ensure it’s in an Equities category; 3 star (active, major security, primary quote) and from the correct market (e.g UK) and currency.

4. Click on Use - this will insert the code for Admiral into your search and return you to the Times Series request box.

5. In the Times Series Request box, select Datatypes.

6. Select the data type for your search, e.g Market Value, then click Use Selected. The book icons next to each datatype will help you choose.

7. In the Time Series Request Box, choose Frequency, Time period and Options.

Then Submit. Frequency: either enter start and end dates in this format dd/mm/yy

or use a shorthand code to count back from today’s date e.g. -5D (last 5 days); -5M (last 5 months); -5Y (last 5 years).

Time period: select from drop-down box (not all frequencies are available for all datatypes).

8. On clicking Submit, the requested data will download into Excel. 9. Save to your P drive or memory stick.
