OVERVIEW 1
1.1 Informal description Soil surveys have been published for most of the agricultural areas, and many surrounding areas, across Canada. Individual detailed soil surveys have been stitched together to create compiled datasets for each province. These compilations usually cover much greater areas than the original tiles.
Alberta: Seamless coverage for the agricultural areas of Alberta at 1:100,000 scale
British Columbia: Seamless coverage for the Lower Fraser Valley at 1:50,000 scale
Manitoba: Stitched coverage for most of the province at 1: 100, 000 scale
Nova Scotia: Stitched and realigned coverage of Nova Scotia at 1:75,000 scale
Ontario: Seamless coverage for the area between Windsor and the Ottawa Valley at
1:50,000
Prince Edward Island: Seamless coverage for the Island at 1:75,000 scale
Saskatchewan: Seamless coverage for the agricultural areas of Saskatchewan at 1:100,000
scale
Yukon: Seamless coverage for part of the Territory at 1:20,000 scale

Abstract The Prince Edward Island Detailed Soil Survey is a dataset series describing the spatial distribution of soils and associated landscapes in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Soil landscape information compiled and published over the previous several decades provided the basis for the development of this relational database. The graphic soil landscape polygons are intended to be represented at a scale of 1:75,000. The associated soil landscape information and soil characteristics are described in a standard format in the Component (CMP), Soil Name File (SNF) and Soil Layer File (SLF) tables.

Abstract The Yukon Detailed Soil Survey dataset series consists of geo-referenced soil polygons with linkages to attribute data found in the associated Component File (CMP), Soil Names File (SNF) and Soil Layer File (SLF). Together, these datasets describe the spatial distribution of soils and associated landforms in the major valleys of the Yukon.

Supplemental Information Soil survey is an inventory of soils and their spatial distribution over a landscape. Soil survey reports contain two parts. The first part is a soil map or series of maps at a particular scale with coding for each soil. Most soil maps also include a supporting Soil Survey Report document that contains background information such as how the soil survey was conducted, and an explanation of interpretive criteria and a summary of the area occupied by various soil types. Detailed soil surveys at 1:20,000 identify more of the variation in soil types across smaller landscapes, as compared to Reconnaissance (1:100,000 or greater) soil surveys. Detailed soil survey information is much more accurate and reliable for making decisions at the farm-level. The Yukon Detailed Soil Survey dataset is compiled from two sets of soil surveys: (1) Reconnaissance Soil Surveys and (2) Detailed Soil Surveys. The reconnaissance soil reports at a scale of 1:125,000, 1:126,720 cover the major valleys of the Yukon including the areas of Carmacks, Clinton Creek, Dawson, Faro, Mayo-Stewart, Pelly, Ross River, Snag, Takhini-Dezadeash, Watson Lake and Whitehorse-Carcross (Day 1966; Rostad et.al. 1978). These maps describe various land attributes such as soil, parent material, landforms, topography, drainage and soil capability for arable agriculture; grazing capability and an evaluation of the soil's engineering uses. Yukon Detailed Soil Survey linework is compiled from tiles of different soil maps. The spatial resolution and accuracy is variable and is dependent on the original source.
