2020 years, where has it gone!

Dance Moves 14 marks the 20th Anniversary ofthe Dance Studies Course at Inchicore College.

Since 1994 we have offered young talented dancers theopportunity to receive professional training in theirown country, developing their dance technique andperformance ability and given students the chance toobtain International teaching qualifications which arerecognised world wide.

In 1994, while teaching the dance module on theTheatre course at Inchicore College, I was approachedby Bob Gleeson the former principal and Martin Finn, the then Theatre course director, and I was offered theopportunity to develop a full-time dance programme aspart of the already established Theatre department atInchicore College: a challenge I took on readily.

From those early days, the course has gone fromstrength to strength. In 1995 we became an approvedRoyal Academy of Dance Centre, enabling the Collegeto offer the prestigious Royal Academy of DanceStudent Teachers Certificate in classical ballet. We havegone on to become an approved Dance Centre for theImperial Society of Dance, and are currently offeringtheir Dance Diploma in Instruction and Dance Diplomain Education in both modern and classical dance.

In 2002 the Dance Studies course was partnered withSpiral E Dance Academy in Vienna as part of theLeonardo de Vinci mobility project. This endeavour hasgrown over the years and we are currently partneredwith the ImPulz Tanz International Festival and LaPacific Choreographic Centre in Grenoble France.

In 2006 the Course expanded from a two year to a threeyear dance programme which gave students the oppor-tunity to further develop their dance qualifications andtheir performance skills. We also established The CoreDance Company as part of the third year programme.

Over the years our students have won many prestigiousAwards: for example, the Fulbright Scholarship, theMillennium Scholarship and also we have had manysuccesses at the National Dance Awards in Longford, inwhich we have taken part since its inauguration in 1999.

Our students have gone on to further their study atprestigious Dance colleges: Trinity Laban Conservatoire,Laine Theatre Arts, Bird College, Collins PerformingArts, Millennium, London Studio Centre, Northern BalletSchool , Royal Academy of Dance and Fontys in theNetherlands.

Our graduates are currently working as professionaldancers, teachers and choreographers throughoutEurope. Two of our former graduates are working aspart of our teaching faculty at Inchicore College andone of our former graduates has recently qualified asan examiner with the Royal Academy of Dance.

From our small beginnings we have become an estab-lished and intrinsic component of the National Frame-work for dance in this country. We are delighted tohave been at the forefront of Dance in Education overthe past 20 years and we look forward to the challengesand changes that lie ahead.

Sadhbh Ó DúnlaingRAD Teaching Dip.

Wow twenty years!! Where did that go? I’m Sadhbh ÓDúnlaing and I was fortunate enough to fulfill my lifelongambition of becoming a ballet teacher thanks to InchicoreCollege and the amazing teachers there. I was luckyenough to be able to train here in Ireland and am trulygrateful for that opportunity.

I’m not sure if I had had to emigrate to qualify as a teacherthat I would have done so. Not only did I have balletclasses in Inchicore but modern, tap and contemporaryalso. I have many wonderful memories of classes there, both dance and academic and learnt so many things therethat I still use in my teaching today. I qualified with distinc-tion in 1995; I then took over my mother’s ballet schools inMount Merrion and Bray and have since expanded toMaynooth and most recently Edenderry where I now teachballet and Jazz through Irish. Here’s to Inchicore, wishingyou every success for the next twenty years!

My time on the Dance Studies Course atInchicore prepared me for my future in theDance Industry. When I went to further mytraining in London I found I had alreadylearned and covered many valuable lessonsand technical aspects which gave me thehead start I needed to be the best I could be.

I learnt the importance of self-discipline, to try to strive inall genres artistically and educationally and to work as partof a team, especially in my second year which providedchallenges and opportunities for us to develop as artistsand as people.

Since leaving Inchicore, I have completed a three yearDance degree in London and have been in full employ-ment in the industry ever since - working in TV, theatreand tours. I am currently dancing for Princess Cruises basedin Los Angeles today and all my training previous to this isprecious to me, the dance industry in Ireland is expandingevery year and they better watch out for the Core heads :)

Elena DegtyarevaRAD Teaching Dip. ISTD CDE

Having already received professionalRussian training in Uzbekistan as a dancer,I worked as a choreographer and teacherin the UK and at the same time dancedprofessionally and toured with variousdance companies worldwide.

When I eventually settled in Ireland, I decided to listento that quiet yearning for further education. Coinciden-tally I was lucky enough to come across a dance Courseat Inchicore College of Further Education. Since themoment I joined the course my every day was filledwith the most constructive build-up of professionalknowledge, giving me the opportunity to improvemyself as a dancer as well as gain an enormous amountof practical knowledge in dance teaching methodology. Most importantly it gave me a lifelong impression of ateacher’s empathy, professionalism, genuine care, abilityto support and to bring out the best of students in anencouraging way. Above all, I am thankful for receivingthe most support and understanding through what wasthen, one of the lowest points for me when I wasbuffeted by doubt and some of the other hard knocksof life.

Also worth mentioning is the versatility of the Inchicorecourse program which contributes enormously to everystudent, whether they aim to proceed with a dancecareer or find their path in teaching. For those whointend to proceed in dance, this course gives a substan-tial milestone for improving and establishing theirtechnique in all the main dance disciplines like Ballet,Modern and Contemporary Dance. It also gives them asecure foundation in the teaching skills for wheneverthey decide that the time is right to return theknowledge, and pass it on to the following generations.

With all my heart, I wish to thank this special collegeand wish all its wonderful teachers, many more flourish-ing and exciting years ahead. I wish that they continuetheir great job, opening more and more doors to awonderful world of dance and creativity, for all theyoung people, which creates, as it did for me,everlasting memories of the joy of dance.
