It’s Time for Victory!Congratulations to all Distinguished, Select Distinguished and President’s Distinguished Clubs!

We are proud of your accomplishments and thank you for your contribution. During the months of May and June, Toastmasters clubs all over the world are racing to ‘Beat the Clock’. This membership building contest is designed for clubs to finish the year with a bang! Clubs adding five new, dual or reinstated members during these two months receive a “Beat the Clock” ribbon from Toastmasters International to display on the club’s banner. In addition to the ribbon, qualifying clubs will also earn a special discount code for 10% off their next club order.

Every club in District 47 is encouraged to enter the race and sprint for the finish line in this challenge. Recruiting new members translates into providing more opportunities for people to receive the benefits of becoming more effective communicators and great leaders.

District 47 members, we need your help! We want to celebrate with you as you make your clubs distinguished. Across the district, there are already 88 distinguished clubs this year, but we need more. Many clubs are very close to achieving this goal. Many clubs have the points but not the members. During the last few weeks of this Toastmasters year, we are making a special appeal for you to add as many more members as possible to your club’s roster before June 30. Take advantage of the Open House incentive the District is offering. Read more in this edition of the Sunshiner or visit our website www.toastmastersd47.org for details.

Submit all education awards and membership payments before June 30. Every award counts and every member is important to the success of your club. Click on the link below to track the progress of your club:

http://reports.toastmasters.org/reports_new/dcp.cfm

Whenever a member joins Toastmasters or achieves an education award, we are helping him/her to become more self confident in speaking, leadership and in life. Your volunteer work makes a difference in your clubs and in our district and we thank you for your commitment.

We want to hear from you! When you achieve an education award, we want to celebrate this success with you. We want to know when a new member is recruited. We want to know the results of your Open House events and we want to know when your club becomes distinguished! This is the ultimate success as a club! We are ready for the victory in District 47.

We are ready to celebrate your personal achievements and the success of your clubs. District 47, it’s time for the victory!

What is an Open House? When you leave your home, do you leave it open so that anyone can come in and take everything back with them? That’s exactly what we want to happen with our Open House. We want our guests to come to Toastmasters and take everything that they can back with them (treasures on communication and leadership).

An Open House is a special event put together by a club to showcase Toastmasters to potential members. Think of it like a Kickoff Event for a new Toastmasters club - you want to show the wonderful aspects of our organization to a room full of people who have never been in Toastmasters before.

The agenda could be simple like this: Toastmaster of the Day - Opening CommentsSpeaker - 5 to 7 minutesTopics Master - 10 to 15 minutesEvaluator - 2 to 3 minutesToastmaster of the Day - Q&A, Closing Comments

The keys to a successful Open House are to

1. Plan the event - Put it on the schedule. Have someone take the lead in organizing it.2. Promote the event - Do a flyer or a press release. Get support from your members. 3. Provide an exciting atmosphere at the event - Food and refreshments definitely help. Also, be sure to have a

dynamic member lead the show as the Toastmaster of the Day.

And lastly, have plenty of membership applications on hand to sign up all those new members!

Are You Still in the Game?Well, we have about one month to go, at least at the time of writing.

We are still aiming for President’s Distinguished status and, I know that as club officers, you all want that as well! YOU have worked sooooo hard this year with all your Clubs and members and we owe it to our members to make this happen.

Most clubs realize just how close they are to being PRESIDENT’S DISTINGUISHED and are now pushing to get those new members, CCs, ACs, and club dues submitted to Toastmasters International on or before June 30, 2012.

There are feverish activities going on in many corners of our District. I would be so happy for you to realize your GOALS. It’s an accomplishment that will stay with you, and it comes with a sense of pride and satisfaction.

There is still a chance for almost all of you to be at least Distinguished. Take a good look at where you are, and what you need to do. Then DO it!!!

District 47 has worked all year to be on the top and we want to show everyone that it pays off doing the right thing all year, not only in the last few weeks.

It takes a village and we had one…Many heartfelt thanks go to Steve Zeris, Conference Chair and his lovely wife Sharon. Steve led with dignity, calm and class. Charlie Pillot, D48 Fall Conference Chair was a reassuring presence as Food and Beverage Coordinator.

Our champions, David Henderson and Olivia Schofield made us laugh, made us cry and we walked away forever changed by the experience.

A special mention to our Division Governors and their teams: Tom Boyd (Division E Governor-Elect) and the Registration team welcomed walk-ins. We haven’t done that in years and we appreciate the hard work it took to handle the challenges this created. Michael Blasco procured an IPad donation which one lucky “First Timer” won and the

Bahamians were EVERYWHERE selling raffle tickets as evidenced by the HUGE 50/50 winnings. Hospitality rocked as we danced the night away in the Boat House and enjoyed late night refreshments with Lynn Perry. The decorations were not only elegant but also edible. BONUS! The banquet programs were striking and Promotions created the conference book cover as well as follow-up emails from Samantha O’Neill (Division Governor-Elect) once you registered. Facilitators kept our 15 speaker presentations rolling and Processionals used the radio voice of Bill Moravec.

The conference book was a work of art led by the team of Wendy Williams, editor and Emily Drenberg, ad sales. Rusty Sherman pulled “From the Beginning” the District 47 history article and I trust you checked out the centerfold, “The Great Divide”!

Finally, to our District Governor, Pamela D. Rolle, who in the face of two District Business meetings and insurmountable odds, stayed cool, calm and collected as she kept us in-line and on track to a successful district 47-48 divide. Thank you one and all for attending, planning and executing “The Greatest Event on Earth”!

It’s Not Too Late! With just a few weeks left in the Toastmasters year, it may seem that there’s not much that can be done if you’re short of your goals. As of May 17th, The District has 171 clubs that have earned at least 5 DCP points this year. That is a fantastic accomplishment!

However, only 88 of these clubs are actually Distinguished Clubs at this time. Those 88 clubs include 14 Distinguished Clubs, 31 Select Distinguished Clubs and 43 President’s Distinguished Clubs. The remaining 83 clubs don’t have enough members to qualify for the Distinguished Club Program, even though they’ve achieved the required DCP goals.

It’s not too late to run a membership drive and get the required members to be a Distinguished Club. In order to qualify, these clubs must have at least 20 members OR net growth of 5 members over their July 1, 2011 membership count. We also have 46 clubs with either 3 or 4 DCP points. There’s still time to complete the educational awards needed to become a Distinguished Club.

Do you need one more speech to complete your CC or AC? Do you need another role to complete a CL? Do you need to do a presentation out of the Successful Club Series to complete your ALB? Speak to your VP of Education and get on the schedule.

End the Toastmasters year in style and help your club become Distinguished!

Scientifically SpeakingBy: Sheri Resnick

Scientifically Speaking, the very first Scripps Florida Toastmasters Club has a lot to celebrate these days. The club is pleased to announce the arrival of its official banner, which officially recognizes the club as a bona fide Toastmasters Club. The club has just celebrated its one-year anniversary, which is an important milestone! Sheri Resnick, President of Scientifically Speaking, is delighted by the growth in membership and is happy to report valuable and proven results. Members are gaining life-long skills while having fun in the process. We interviewed Sheri about the Club and here is an excerpt from that interview.

Q – Why is Toastmasters helpful to scientists? A- During the course of their careers, it is often that researchers are in front of people in order to deliver results of their work. Whether in front of their lab, delivering poster presentations, participating in job interviews, functioning in a teaching environment, facilitating proposals to investors for potential businesses or scientific talks to enlighten others, scientists will inevitably speak publicly throughout their careers.

Q- What set of skills can people learn if they join a Toastmasters Club? A - Club members can expect to learn: (1) Confidence when speaking publicly; (2) How to conduct and participate in business meetings; (3) To become strong leaders. If a scientist decides to run his/her own lab, own his/her own business or sit on an organization’s board during the course of their careers, he/she will need to utilize these important skills.

Q - How will these skills help scientists in their careers?A - Individuals who display self-confidence and assertiveness when giving scientific presentations will typically be successful. This is due to the their ability to organize their thoughts and deliver concise, well thought out talks. Audiences always appreciate presentations that are easily understood and have a clear beginning, middle and end. Additionally, individuals who utilize English as their second language will benefit by practice, ultimately gaining confidence in their command of English through peer support.

Q - How does Toastmasters work?A – Well, Toastmasters International is a worldwide organization that provides the structure for members of clubs to grow and evolve into great public speakers and dynamic leaders. By attending the meetings, the club members have the opportunity to practice public speaking as well as receive peer evaluations and support. It is a practice-by-doing model and I can tell you it works very well. Our members are enjoying the experience while developing into confident speakers and strong future leaders.

Congratulations to These Successful Club Coaches! By: Emiy Drenberg, DTM & Hieu Huynh, DTM, LGM-East

Did you know that serving as a Club Coach satisfies one of the requirements for the Advanced Leader Silver (ALS) educational award? To earn credit toward the ALS award, the Club Coach must lead their assigned club to Distinguished Club status. Delivering the Moments of Truth module from the Successful Club Series is a great way to teach members of the struggling club how to recognize threats to the club’s stability and progress. This program also helps members accept and assume responsibility for the club’s future. Toastmasters.org sums it up best:

Hippocrates said, “Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work.” Similarly, you should enable the clubs you coach to continue to grow and thrive. Only after you help the club to achieve Distinguished status and help the members find their inner doctor, may you truly claim success. (The First Class Club Coach)

Open House Showcase

Hieu Huynh, Ron Rice, D47 LGM - East D47 LGM – West

Program Dates: January and July Retaining members is essential to the health of a club, and gaining new members is equally vital to its success. For potential members visiting a club, first impressions are paramount. Toastmasters' new Open House Showcase is a great way for clubs to make that first impression a positive one and to attract new members. Clubs that are successful can earn discounts on useful products. How? Follow these simple steps:

Hold a successful Open House in January and/or July.

After the Open House takes place, email your complete marketing package to

[email protected] with your club name and club number in the subject line

and include the following (bulleted items must be included to qualify):

A completed, signed guest list

Pictures of the event

The Open House agenda

Sample marketing materials used to host the Open House (e.g., fliers, brochures,

guest packets, other promotional items)

Your advertising plan

You may also send video footage if you'd like. As many as 50 of the clubs that gain the most new members as a result of their Open House events will receive a 30% discount on their next club order. If any ties occur, the quality of the clubs' marketing packages will determine the winner. All new members of a club must have been on the applicable Open House guest list. The member's join date must be in January or February (for the January Open House) and in July or August (for the July Open House). Complete marketing packages must be received by February 7 (for the January Open House) and August 7 (for the July Open House). Membership applications and payment for members must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than February 29 (for the January showcase) and August 31 (for the July showcase). Clubs do not get credit for transfer or charter members. The 30% discount expires six months after the date of issue and is not valid with any other offer.
