The purpose of this report is to present an overview of Bexar County and San Antonio area demographic changes between 2000 and 2010 using U.S. Census Bureau decennial census Summary File 1 (SF 1) data. Selected race/ethnicity; age; household; and housing unit data are presented in tables and charts and text highlights. The data are provided for a total of twelve geographic areas of analysis including: Bexar County; the City of San Antonio; and the ten City of San Antonio Council Districts.

S U M M A R Y

National: San Antonio’s population grew by approximately 15.9% from 1,144,646 to 1,326,539 (see methodology section). The 15.9% increase moved San Antonio from the 9th largest city in the U.S. in 2000 to the 7th largest by 2010. San Antonio was the fastest growing city among the top ten largest cities in the nation, adding more people to its total population and having the greatest percent change between 2000 and 2010.

Texas: San Antonio is now the second largest city in Texas, behind Houston (population 2,099,451) and ahead of Dallas (population 1,197,816), Austin (population 790,390), and Ft. Worth (population 741,206). Of the ten largest cities in Texas, San Antonio’s population growth rate ranked fi fth behind Ft. Worth (+38.6%), Laredo (+33.7%), Austin (+20.4%), and Plano (+17%).

County: Bexar County grew from a population of 1,392,931 to 1,714,773 (+23.1%). The county grew at a signifi cantly higher rate than the City of San Antonio over the last ten years. Bexar County’s Hispanic or Latino, Not Hispanic or Latino Black or African American Alone (hereafter referred to as Black or African American) and Not Hispanic or Latin Asian Alone (hereafter referred to as Asian) populations grew at signifi cantly higher rates than (+33%, +23.4% and +85.1%, respectively) than the City of San Antonio’s over the last ten years. In contrast to the City of San Antonio’s declining Not Hispanic or Latino White Alone (hereafter referred to as White) population, Bexar County’s White population grew (+4.6%).

City: As mendtioned above, San Antonio grew from a population of 1,144,646 to 1,326,539 (+15.9%), adding 181,893 people to the total population. The Hispanic or Latino (of any race) population accounted for 91.9% of this increase. Race/Ethnicity: The Hispanic or Latino population grew from 671,394 to 838,454 (+24.9%). The White population decreased from 364,357 to 352,858 (-3.2%). This was the only population group that decreased. The Black or African American population grew from 74,778 people to 83,302 people (+11.4%). The Asian population was the fastest growing group, increasing from 17,084 to 30,562 (+78.9%). Hispanics or Latinos continue to represent the largest proportion of the total population at 63.2%, followed by Whites (26.6%), Blacks or African Americans (6.3%), Asians (2.3%) and all others (1.6%). Gender: While the growth rate of the male population in San Antonio was slightly higher than females (+17% and +14.9% respectively) females remain a slight majority of the total population.

Age: The median age of San Antonio has increased over the last ten years from 32.9 to 34.3. Council District 4 continues to have the lowest median age of all Districts, at 30.8 and Council District 9 continues to have the highest median age at 37.8. Households Size and Type: Households are getting smaller in San Antonio. Between 2000 and 2010, the average household size of housholds up to seven persons or more decreased from 2.74 to 2.69. Non-family households grew at a much faster rate than traditional family households, (+29.4% and +13.2%) respectively. Housing: Bexar County added housing units at a faster rate than the city over the last ten years, (+27.1% and +20.9%). The city growth rate for renter occupied (+22.6) and vacant (+61.2%) housing units both outpaced the growth rate of owner occupied (+15%) housing units.

Prior to the 2010 Decennial Census, one out of every six households received a much longer census form than all other households with socio-economic demographic questions to complete. In addition to topics included on the short form, the long form questions covered topics such as: Income, Employment; Education; Travel Times to Work; Housing Costs and Poverty. Due to the unpopularity of the long-form census it was discontinued in the 2010 Decennial Census and thus substantially less information is now being produced from that data source. The topics that continue to be addressed in the Decennial Census include: Population; Sex; Age; Race; Ethnicity; Household / Family; Housing Units; and Group Quarters.

The Decennial Census long form was replaced by the American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS is an on-going survey with approximately 1 out of 55 households returning a survey each month. Due to the much smaller sample size, data is released depending on the size of population in the survey area. For some areas, such as states and larger counties (with populations greater than 65,000), data is available annually. For other areas (at least 20,000 in population size), three years of data are required for a data release. For areas smaller than 20,000 in population size, such as small counties and census tracts, fi ve years of survey returns are required to generate a statistically valid survey response.

An alternative data source to the ACS can be obtained from a private data provider such as Nielsen Claritas. The benefi t of these data is that they are produced annually at small resolutions such as census block groups, which are smaller geographies than tracts and much better suited to aggregating by areas such as Council Districts. In addition, this data provider uses multiple private and public (including the Decennial Census and ACS) data sources, with most obtained on at least an annual basis, to create and update its demographic database.

The Addendum provides greater detail regarding: SF 1 datasets; data resolution; source tables for the data included in this report; clarifi cations of Race / Ethnicity and Types of Households / Same Sex Couple issues; the City of San Antonio versus Census Bureau’s population calculations; the procedure used to assign block to particular Council Districts, and further details regarding the update to the Population Distribution and Change report released in May 2010.

S F 1 D a t a s e tThe U.S. Census SF 1 are released as individual fi les with identical tables for each state. Data for the states and their sub areas are provided in hierarchical sequence down to the block level (P & H tables), the census tract level (PCT & HCT tables), or the county level (PCO tables), depending on the detail shown in the table. The fi le structure includes, but is not limited to the following geographic levels: State; County; County subdivision; Place (such as the City of San Antonio); Census tract; Block group; and Block. The U.S. Census Bureau’s Web site (www.census.gov) provides SF 1 Flat ASCII fi les by state for download via File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Components include a fi xed-length ASCII format geographic header data and 47 comma-separated ASCII format data fi les with multiple tables each. From this ASCII format, data can be extracted for a particular area (such as Bexar and Medina Counties – Two Blocks within the City of San Antonio are in Medina County) and converted using a software package such as Microsoft Offi ce Access into several formats, including databases, spreadsheets, and for use with GIS (mapping) applications.

R e s o l u t i o n o f D a t aIn the 2010 Census SF 1 data there are 331 tables at various county and sub-county geographic area resolutions with a total of 5,960 variables. The fi nest resolution data is at the block level with Bexar County having almost 20,000 blocks in 2000 and over 26,000 blocks in 2010. Not all data is available at the block level. For instance, the homeless population data, compiled for the fi rst time in the 2010 census, is only available at the much larger tract level (366 tracts in the 2010).

C O S A P o p u l a t i o n C a l c u l a t i o n v e r s u s C e n s u s B u r e a u C a l c u l a t i o n sThe reported 2010 total population for the City of San Antonio by the U.S. Census Bureau is 1,327,407. Once the 2000 and 2010 SF 1 for Bexar and Medina counties had been obtained and converted to a usable GIS format, blocks with a place value indicating a designation as being within the City of San Antonio (PLACENS = 02411774) were selected. The blocks along the City of San Antonio boundary were then visually compared with the offi cial City of San Antonio boundaries and those of other cities & towns. It was determined that the Census Bureau had assigned 35 census blocks with a total population of 868, to the City of San Antonio that are actually outside of the City and include portions of the cities of Leon Valley, Balcones Heights, Hill Country Village, Windcrest and Kirby. This report excludes those 868 people giving the City of San Antonio a total population of 1,326,539 for 2010.

P r o c e d u r e t o A s s i g n B l o c k s t o C o u n c i l D i s t r i c t A r e a sIf the central point of a census block fell inside a Council District, that blocks value’s were assigned to that Council District. A visual review of the Council District boundaries, Council District symbolized blocks and aerial photography ensured correct assignments.
