    What level is the play for?

    What are the advantages of this type of activity when learninga language?

    The play can be seen by students of all ages and levels that have hada minimum of approximately 150 hours of English instruction. It presentsvarious elements that make it enjoyable to all students, regardless of the age group.We suggest listening to the songs in class and working with the plot before seeingthe play (especially with young children).

    -It increases the students interest in learning the language and he or she discoversthat English is also useful outside the classroom.

    -It challenges the student to understand English spoken by someone other than hisor her teacher, thus improving the students listening comprehension.

    -In the days prior to and following the event the students are highly motivated.Teachers can use the written and audio resources provided to take advantage ofthis motivation.

    -Working with songs from the play is an excellent opportunity to learnnew vocabulary while having fun.

    -It entertains whilst extolling human values in the process.

    -It preserves the relationship between children and the art of theatre.

    Can the play be presented at my school?

    The Plot

    Our story begins in Bergerac early in the 17th century. A brave captain calledCyrano lives in this small French town. He is the best with his sword and famous far and widefor his courage, poetic skills and....... the size of his nose.

    Since he was a child his heart has been devoted to his friend Roxanne,the Dukes daughter. In spite of this, Cyrano has never told her what he truly feels.He has always thought that Roxanne, as beautiful as she is, could never fall in lovewith a man possessing such a nose.

    The Duke has instructed Madame Ciboulette to find a suitable candidate for his

    daughter to marry. When Christian de Neuvillette arrives at Bergerac to join Cyranosarmy, Madam Ciboulette decides that this young, handsome soldier is the perfecthusband for Roxanne.

    Although Christian is good-looking, Roxanne is not attracted to him so MadamCiboulette comes out with a plan. This plan is based on a lie which she believes willjoin the couple. Being unaware of Cyranos feelings, she tells him that Roxanneis deeply in love with Christian and that he must tell this to the young soldier.

    When Christian is told this lie, he quickly believes it and becomesinterested in Roxanne as she is not only beautiful but also rich. As he knows Roxanne

    is very romantic, he asks Cyrano for help to write her a poem. Feeling heart-broken,Cyrano puts aside his feelings and gives Christian one of his own poems. Roxanne, whowasnt really interested in Christian at first, starts changing her mind as shes movedby the love letter.

    With Cyranos help, Christian soon makes Roxanne fall in love with himbut Cyrano feels they are not being honest with her so he stops giving his poems toChristian. As Christian is willing to marry Roxanne at any cost, he is not satisfiedwith this decision and steals Cyranos book of poems so as to carry out his ownmischievous plan.

    Soon the marriage is announced and Cyranos heart is filled with sorrow.

    His beloved Roxanne is being deceived by Christians greed. The ending is near and lovemust fight to prevail....

    2) Since he was a child he has liked his friend Roxanne, the dukes daughter. But Cyranohas never told her what he really feels. He has always thought that as Roxanne is sobeautiful, she could never fall in love with a man possessing such a large nose.

    3) The Duke has told Madam Ciboulette to find the right candidate for his daughter tomarry. When Christian de Neuvillette arrives at Bergerac to join Cyranos army, Madam

    Ciboulette decides that this young handsome soldier is the perfect husband for Roxanne.

    4)Although Christian is good-looking Roxanne is not attraced to him so MadamCiboulette works out a plan. She doesnt know what Cyranos feelings are so she tellshim Roxanne is deeply in love with Christian and that he must tellthis to the young soldier.

    5) When Cyrano tells Christian the lie, he is quickly attracted to Roxanne as she is not onlybeautiful but also rich. As he knows Roxanne is very romantic, he asks Cyrano for help to

    write her a poem. Feeling heart-broken, Cyrano leaves his feelings aside and gives Christianone of his own poems. Roxanne is moved by the love letter.

    6) With Cyranos help, Christian soon makes Roxanne fall in love with him but Cyranofeels they are not being honest with her so he stops giving him his poems. Christianis not satisfied with this decision as he really wants to marry Roxanne so he steals Cyranosbook of poems and follows his own mischievous plan.
