Cyclosporin induces remission in steroidresistant idiopathic nephrotic syndrome
Cyclosporin in combination with prednisone for 6 months produced complete remissions in 14/31 children with steroid-resistant idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. However, cyclosporin therapy was thought to precipitate rapid progression to end-stage renal disease in I patient, and treatment was withdrawn in 2 patients because of reductions in creatinine clearance.
The children were aged I month to 14.3 years at disease onset, and all had a creatinine clearance of ~ 50 ml/min/ 1. 73m 3. Partial remission was achieved in 3 patients, and 14 patients failed to respond. Other adverse effects included hypertension (n = 12), hypertrichosis (18) and gum hypertrophy (II).
