Here's why our students require additional education

and tools to stay safe online:


• One in 5 children had received a sexual solicitation or approach over the Internet during the previous 12 months

• (source: 2000 study by the National Center for Missing and Exploited

Children).


• 40% of children do not discuss Internet safety with their parents

• 37% of survey respondents said their parents would disapprove of their Internet behavior

• 80% of children surveyed who use email, receive inappropriate spam on a daily basis

• (source: 2004 national study conducted by Internet Safety Education Foundation i-SAFE America Inc.).


Basic Tips for Parents and Students

• Keep usernames and profiles generic and anonymous

• Do not post photographs• Never give out personal information• Keep the computer in an open area of the home• Surf and discuss the Internet with your student


Child/Parent Internet Safety Agreement

• 1. I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.

• 2. I will not give out my address, telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parent's permission.

• 3. I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my parent or guardian along.

• 4. If I get a message that is mean or makes me feel uncomfortable, I will not respond. It is not my fault if I get a message like that, and I will tell my parents if I do.

• 5. I will work with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online, and areas that I am allowed to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.

Tips to Avoid Online Bullying

• Don’t open messages from known or suspected bullies

• Tell an adult – report bullying• If you are threatened with harm, tell the

police with your parents• Save messages from the bully – have

your parents help


• The main thing to take with you is the importance of communicating with your child about all these issues.
