Time to go can crazy and createWHO would have thought that apile of trash could win you ashare of R50 000 cash?

This is exactly what Collect-a-Can’s 2012 CAN Craze com-petition is about.

Starting nationally, the com-petition, that kicks off thismonth, encourages schools orpupils to build a structure out of300 or more used cans in themost creative way possible, withthe winning entrants awardedcash prizes.

Entries will close on 30S e p t e m b e r.

‘The hands-on nature of theCAN Craze Competition getschildren to interact with theused cans and in doing so, torecognise that what may seemlike a waste product is in fact a

valuable resource that can be re-used in their artwork and thenrecycled, prolonging the lifes-pan of the raw materials andpreserving natural resources aswell as energy,’ says Zimasa Ve-laphi, Public Relations andMarketing Manager of Collect-a-Can.

‘The cans used in the buildingof these structures need to becollected by the participants andare later recovered by Collect-a-Can and processed for recy-cling.

‘This process demonstrates toschools and pupils the environ-mental benefits of collectingcans and shows them that re-cycling can be fun.’

Participation in the competi-tion can be individual or in

teams. Pictures of structuresneed to be submitted to Collect-a-Can along with a completedentry form which can be ob-tained from Collect-a-Canbranches or from their websitew w w. c o l l e c t a c a n . c o . z a .

Collect-a-Can encourages or-ganisations to get involved withschools entering the CAN CrazeCompetition. In 2010 a winningstructure of dolphins, built byCreston College, was put ondisplay outside the KZN SharksBoard offices during their Na-tional Marine Week activities.
