EDITOR’S NOTE

In my past three years with CUTOUT, I found what was deemed impossible to carry out before – such as the telling of news about the development of graphic design in the country – can now be easily obtained just by reading CUTOUT. The platform created provides the graphic designers the opportunities for creativity, discourse, inspiration and ideas. While contributing to the local design industry’s ecosystem, the publication widens the scope of participation from designers in Asia and the world, as well as increasing the level of interest in collaboration and constructive thinking toward the profession.

I am glad to see the circle of graphic designers in Malaysia multiplying as we speak. Our humble beginnings in early 2010 saw a few hundred graphic designers following us on Facebook in the first month that we opened an account with the social media site. Since then, words about CUTOUT started to spread and the number steadily picked up. Now, we update our tens of thousands of followers on the latest design news through our Facebook page (CUTOUT Magazine Malaysia).

We are grateful to be involved in the industry and introducing this meaningful Student Alley Creative Showcase + Award for the first time, where the Graphic Design Association of Malaysia (wREGA) is called upon to be the panel of judges, is important to establish a platform where students can excel too.

22 out of 47 young individuals have been shortlisted for their artworks that show quality and creativity in their response to an open brief provided by CUTOUT. The Award is introduced to recognise the students’ creative excellence in visual communication, and further intensify the industry’s position for quality standards in design. For the students, it is a good exposure and learning curve to the discovery of their capabilities as future graphic designers. Feast on the artworks that we reveal to you on this very day of fourth of January 2013 at the White Box of MAP @ Publika.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to applaud the team in CUTOUT for your dedication to the event, as well as giving everyone a wonderful experience working together throughout your time with us. Cheers to the beginning of another meaningful year ahead of us.

FOREWORD

The Pertubuhan Wakaf Reka Grafik Malaysia, or better known as wREGA, is on a terrific mission to fulfill its role as the graphic design association of Malaysia by creating, engaging and empowering graphic design activities and events across the country.

This year we have had amazing events happening starting with the prestigious international Rediscovery: Icograda Design Week in Sarawak 2012. We have witnessed for the first time a signature wREGA event Jack in the Box: Springing Ideas happening in 4 states of Malaysia at once; Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak in an effort to unite, nourish and encourage sharing of ideas among graphic designers. These are all our efforts in reinvigorating the graphic design industry to be on par with the rest of the world.

wREGA is happy to endorse CUTOUT Magazine’s Student Alley Creative Showcase + Award in its continuous pursuit for the betterment of the graphic design industry. Kudos to the CUTOUT team for organising this for graphic design students and we hope this serves as a very good platform for up and coming graphic designers to emerge to make our nation proud.

Where do you get the inspiration for your design?Novels and movies are top on my list, followed by the things in my surroundings. What are the three things you cannot live without?Of course, my family comes first. Their support is extremely important to motivate me in my studies. Also, I can’t live without language (for communication) and determination (the spirit to move on in my life).

If you had to choose one word (or one short phrase) to describe yourself, what would it be? A person who likes to think from many perspectives.

My concept behind each artwork is based on Amnesty International’s Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The three different types of board games are used as a symbol of freedom. Placing other board games’ game piece on the Xiang Qi (Chinese chess), the Western chess and the Halma board game is to show people that everyone has the right to freedom and they can choose the place they want to go.

W Cinemax’s brand gets its identity from 3D films’ characteristics using the concept of red and cyan anaglyph image. Gravitas means dignity, seriousness, and maturity, qualities that are found in leaders or people with higher position. Gravitas was chosen as the brand name as “the wine with dignity/serious wine” and to build a strong character and perception of the wine because buying wine (especially for a new consumer) is tricky due to the massive choices available in the market.

The deer’s antler symbolises Gravitas. The antler in the design was tweaked to visualise the image of a grape. Overall, the whole design is modern (in gold and silver colours) to reflect the personalities of modern young professionals – classy and sophisticated.

The packaging for this set of kitchen utensils is inspired by oriental elements. The formation of the logo is borrowed from the Chinese word, which means “togetherness”. I wish to present the warmness of a family when they are having dinner together. The leaves shown on the packaging makes the logo stand out. Moreover, I used the leaves to bring out the message of eco-friendliness, to remind the public to be friendly to the environment.

Title: Sexy Body

Getting direct light works sometimes, but when it comes to creativity, you should know how to play with the light. This is how I understood the direction of light in photography. In this shot, I tried the back lighting technique with a black piece of cloth to cover the glass from the back and let the light come through from the sides to create a nice figure.

Title: Dragon Breath

This project was created using Unreal Tournament 3 engine, which is a first-person shooter game. In this story I created, the player is the last of his race and he is trying to protect his windy and foggy town from the intruders. This is the panorama view of the town built inside a forest where you can see the giant frog, the Oni light statue and the gate as the road mark of the game.

This is a view taken in the Dragon Breath game. I designed the town with traditional eastern elements, where this cultural street represents the Fire element. There are lanterns, masks and vending machines from Japan, the famous bird street in Hong Kong and the bazaar in Malaysia.

Title: Clock Button Design – Time Will Pass Like Rain

For me, I believe that time will pass like rain. Time will pass, no matter good or bad. Like the weather, there’ll be sunshine after the rain. For this moment, we laugh and we cry sometimes. The next moment, we may not. Every single moment is unique in our lives.

Here’s a photograph on the simple life in a fishing village of Pulau Ketam. There is no concrete forest around. There are no buses and very few cars. We will never see this scene in small towns or cities. The people work hard at farming or fishing to gain their daily necessities (food and shelter) no matter it is a good day or rainy day.

My illustration tells the story of a lumberjack. The lumberjack’s job is to cut trees. One day he was working until very late and the woodcutter machine that he was using was causing trouble again. So he decided to use the axe to continue his work but he fell into a hole without looking. He fainted. The trees attacked him and a bear had saved him. When he woke up, he saw a big bear licking his wounds. He remembered the bear as the little bear that he saved in the past. The lumberjack quit his job to become a forest ranger afterwards.

Title: Surrealism

The concept is about a smart humanoid-hawk studying to get what he wanted (an award) and to escape from the birdcage. The hidden meaning is if humans can be free as long as they want, why can’t animals too? Stop animal cruelty. Birds have wings for a reason. To fly.

Title: Save our daughters. Stop FGM.

Female circumcision is usually carried out on adolescents; hence it is a violation of children’s right. It also infringes on a person’s health, safety and right to have a complete body. Besides, female circumcision invades the human right to be free from torture and inhumane treatment. The possible death brought by this procedure violates the human’s right to life. It reflects deeply rooted in gender inequality which turns out to be extreme discrimination towards females. The hollow pattern on the blade used conventionally during circumcision shows an African girl. The red inverted triangle resembles female genital organs.
