WELCOME to your guide to publishing with CUSTOM HOUSE MUSIC INTERNATIONAL (CHMI)

CHMI is dedicated to providing a simple, transparent service for writers, producers and artists that are not currently published.

We are pro-active, creative people and being song writers ourselves understand the need for crystal clear agreements to ensure that you trust us to administer your rights whilst you continue to do what you do best and write great songs, original music and more.

It‘s important to be published. Royalties are due on performance and broadcasting of your songs.

Royalties are also due on manufactured product (mechanical royalties).

We make sure that what is due gets collected and distributed to you.

HELP US HELP YOU This guide explains how to register your songs with us. However, the key to success is building a good relationship between artist and publisher. So rather than just acting as a collection agency and accountant, we want to help push your music. So when you‘ve written that hit, let us know. Point out to us the tracks that are going down well live. Give us your opinion on what songs you think would work well in TV / Film etc. We can‘t know all the songs off by heart so some direction from you on what you think we should be pushing would be beneficial.

PUBLISHING MADE SIMPLEUnlike other publishers that want to either sign your publishing for 7 years (standard) or even in perpetuity (for life!) we offer a very simple and fair 1 year rolling contract. If you’re happy with us then we just roll the deal on. Likewise if someone comes along offering you big bucks then you can cancel and you’re free to go.

You receive 75% of our net receipts. A lot of other publishing deals are 60/40 or 70/30 at best. We believe that by giving our writers bigger returns they will be better placed to continue writing and providing works to be published.

Our administration facilities are provided by KOBALT MUSIC the most successful independent music publisher in the world. They have reciprocal arrangements with collection societies in over 37 territories, meaning if your song gets played on the radio in Austria at 3am, we know about it and collect the royalties due to you.

In addition to Custom House collecting and distributing your publishing royalties, we are also proactive in exploiting your rights. We have relationships with TV, Advertising agencies and media outlets that are all looking for music. We are backed by over 40 global synch staff

REGISTERING YOUR SONGSFORMS, SPREADSHEETS & THE INITIAL STEPS TO GET STARTED

In order for us to register your songs and start collecting revenue we need to you to complete a few forms and sign a contract.

We‘ll also need your bank details so you can be paid.

DON‘T FORGET!! - If you move home, be sure to give us your new address.

DON‘T FORGET!! - If you change banks, give us your new details.

Once registered REMEMBER to tell your record label or anyone releasing, playing, broadcasting the songs that you are PUBLISHED. All printed material should have the song title, writers and publis-her information. For example:

YOUR SONG (Smith / Jones)Published by Custom House Music International

Tell your record label that you are published. They should bepaying Mechanical Royalties on manufactured product.However, if you‘ve not been published before they may becutting you a deal that doesn‘t then work for them if they suddenly have to start paying royalties on top. Let them knowin advance now for any future project that you are published.

01 We will send you an EXCEL spreadsheet that needs to be filled in.

We need 4 basic bits of information:

1) THE NAME OF THE SONG 2) THE ARTIST THAT PERFORMS THE SONG3) THE NAMES OF THE WRITERS4) THE WRITER SPLITS*

* Total must equal 100% - Splits are decided by the writers. 2 writers may decide to split the publishing 50/50 or if one has done the lions share it might be an 80 / 20 split. You decide.

The file that we will email you is called CHMI - NEW WORKS.xls

There is an example line to show you how to fill in the sheet. Fill it in, save it and then email it back to us at artist@customhousemusic.com

Please be consistent in how you add info. If you are DAVE SMITH then stay DAVE SMITH and don‘t change to D. SMITH or DAVEY SMITH etc. Remember this for future submissions.

We prefer you to fill this in. However, if you don‘t have access to EXCEL and have an urgent need to register then we can fill this in for you. Just email us the above 4 bits of information.

We need to be able to pay you!

So please fill in this form for EACH writer.

03 Fill in and return the EXPLOITATION form

If any of your songs have previously been released phy-sically on CD or vinyl etc then please fill in this form for each release and return it to us.

For new songs that have yet to be recorded or released, keep one of these forms on file and let us know when the tracks have been released.

You are due MECHANICAL ROYALTIES from your physical releases, so it helps us to know what has been issued.

Having received your spreadsheet with the song titles, writers and writer percentages we will prepare your contracts and send copies to you.

We will send one for each writer and one for ourselves. So, if you are a 4 piece band and there‘s 4 writers, we will send you 5 contracts. If you are a solo writer we will send you 2 contracts. Sign ALL of them (they will be clearly marked) and send ALL of them back to us.

We will then sign and keep our copy and send your copies back to you.

WHAT NOW? - Sit back and let us represent you....

Your songs are registered with ALL the main collecting societies WORLD WIDE once you sign with us. So there is no need to join PRS etc in order to get paid as we coll-ect and distribute for you. However, if you are a gigging band / musician then it could be worth registering with PRS if you play any of their selected venues as there is revenue collected here which is rightfully yours.
