Our Favorite Fine-Dining Restaurants in Cusco:

Cusco is a city full of varied restaurants that offer both traditional Peruvian dishes and international cuisine. Over the last few years Cusco has also become famous for its fusion cooking, incorporating traditional foods such as quinoa, maize and Cuy with more westernized ingredients. Many restaurants are located on or close to the main plaza, but many of the best restaurants are just a few streets away hidden amongst the cobbled streets of the Cusco. In the last 10 years the demand for luxury travel to Peru has significantly grown. Nowadays it’s not just a vacation spot for hardy backpackers and hikers, but a destination that serves travellers seeking a higher level of service and comfort. With the majority of international visitors heading to the heartland of the Inca Empire – the City of Cusco, high up in the Andes has seen an influx of high-end and innovative eateries catering to the more discerning traveller. Although there are literally hundreds of restaurants to choose from, only a handful actually make the grade. If you are planning on staying in the city for a few nights here is a guide to the very best fine dining restaurants in Cusco.

Limo Restaurant

Located in Cusco’s main square Plaza de Armas – above the rather un-Peruvian McDonalds restaurant. Start with a superb (and innovative) cocktail, perfect to accompany the complimentary starter of French-fried potatoes and three salsas served in a lime-green pot. Then graduate to causita balls, ceviche and one of the imaginative sushi rolls (which have a Peruvian bent) or tiraditos (Peruvian-style sashimi). Though seafood is truly the great attraction of Limo, meat-eaters can opt for more traditional highland entrees, such as pork shoulder and adobo de cerdo. Everything is gorgeously presented and carefully executed, and though it's not inexpensive for Cusco, for most international travelers it's a steal.

Limo on Plaza de Armas With daily deliveries of fresh seafood brought in from Lima and Arequipa, Limo is one of the best places to enjoy a Peruvian ceviche and even a Japanese sushi. During high-season advanced bookings are recommended. Portal de Carnes 236, 2nd Floor, Plaza de Armas, Cusco 084 240 668

Cicciolina’s Restaurant

Although commonly mistaken for an Italian restaurant, Cicciolina’s offers a wide range of international and local dishes that incorporate their own unique twist. The restaurants décor is warm and attractive with a feel that is unpretentious and inviting. We are very picky with our ingredients. We respect original flavours and fussily choose the freshest of vegetables and herbs from the Sacred Valley. Rescueing and understanding the importance of each product to finally make the finished dish, to create the Fiesta to dine!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cicciolinas on Calle Triunfo Diners can choose to sit either in the bar area (at tall tables) or relax in the elegant main restaurant. With an open kitchen and waiters busily working the floor, Cicciolina’s has an atmosphere that is rarely found in many restaurants in Cusco. Calle Triunfo 393 2nd Floor, Cusco Telephone: (084) 239 510

The Inka Grill Resaurant

The Inka Grill was one of the first up-market restaurants in Cusco, serving up innovative novoandina and international dishes for more than 15 years. For visitors not wanting to venture very far, the restaurant is easy to find and centrally located on the corner of Plaza de Armas and Calle Plateros. Start with a bowl of yummy camote (sweet potato) chips and green salsa. The best dishes are Peruvian standards such as sautéed alpaca tenderloin served over quinoa (a grain) and ají de gallina (shredded chicken with nuts, cheese, and chili peppers), and desserts such as a coca-leaf crème brûlée. The extensive menu also includes a wide range of international dishes such as homemade pastas and pizzas from a wood-burning oven. Inka Grill on Portal de Panes The menu heavily features dishes that utilize ingredients sourced locally, including organic salads and vegetables from the nearby Sacred Valley of the Inka’s. For a traditional take on a classic dish try their quinoa risotto. Portal de Panes 115, Plaza de Armas Telephone: 084/262-992

Green’s Organic Restaurant

Although the name might suggest that this is a vegetarian restaurant, it actually refers to the restaurants ethos to provide a menu that uses organically grown produce. Recently refurbished, the décor of the restaurant is fresh and colourful with an emphasis on using recycled products. Look out for the lamp shades at the bar ingeniously made from old Inca Cola bottles. Greens Organics on Santa Catalina Angosta There is plenty to choose from on the menu; but Greens is most famous for its inventive salads like their Spring Salad, made with roasted baby beets, grilled fennel, caramelized pumpkin, and chestnuts. Santa Catalina Angosta 135, Piso 2, Plaza de Armas Telephone: 51 84 24 3399

Incanto Restaurant

Stylish contemporary design in an Andean setting has made this large upmarket restaurant near the Plaza a hit with those looking for a classy night out. Dishing up Mediterranean-Andean fusion cuisine as well as more traditional dishes such as delicious thin-crust pizza, this has got to be one of the only places in the world where you'll find ravioli aji de gallina, a traditional creamy chicken sauce usually served with rice, on the menu. Wander down the back to the open kitchen, and don't forget to have a look at the original Inca wall on the way. Underneath Green’s Restaurant. Chicha Restaurant

Created by Peru’s celebrity chef Gaston Acurio, ChiCha offers a gourmet take on traditional food from the region of Cusco. Set on the second floor of a Spanish colonial Casona, the restaurant is large and spacious with a distinctively classy feel. Using local ingredients like quinoa for his tabbouleh and daring to offer an upscale version of pachamanca (a traditional countryside barbecue of meat and potatoes cooked underground), nearly everything works. You can also get cocktails and desserts (including a tasting of three desserts using choclo, or large-kernel corn) are exquisite. Note that there's no sign on the street; the entrance is to the right of the touristy restaurant El Truco and up the stairs. Lomo saltado with tacu tacu, adobo, and causa are popular dishes on the menu. But for a special treat, you might want to try the pacha manca, a selection of Peruvian potatoes, broad beans, meats, and cheese’s served in an earthenware pot – similar to those used in the Andean highland communities. Fallen Angel

It may be hard to conceive of this wildly eccentric, artistically designed funhouse as a restaurant rather than a nightclub, but it is, and quite a good one at that. Though it takes a while to focus on the menu given the maximalist surroundings of flying pigs and floating cherubs, once you do, carnivores will be in heaven: it is dominated by beef tenderloin, with a choice of 15 different salsas, some with Asian and

exotic combinations. Other than meat, the emphasis is on local produce and ingredients from the Sacred Valley (where the creative owner spent much of his youth on a farm) for sides and salads. Non-meat eaters can also opt for pastas, such as sweet-potato tortellini, and ceviche, but the best bet by far are the steaks. From the baroque décor to the menu, though, the adventurous Fallen Angel is definitely a love-it-or-hate it kind of place. Plazoleta Nazarenas 221, Cuzco, Perú Reservations recommended: 084 258 184

Piskuo

Right in the heart of Cuzco on the Plaza de Armas above Gato’s Market. The uber-hip modern décor and a gorgeous bar area are relaxing and inviting as soon as you arrive. That bar also offers an amazing variety of specialty cocktails, including the Peruvian classic, the Pisco Sour, shaken with coca leaves. The result is a less sweet and citrusy drink with a mild green earthy taste. The entrees menu is another example of the culinary traditions and global flavors that have blended so nicely in the former capital of the Inca Empire. Try the thin slices of pork loin glazed with a mandarin honey demi-glace, served over a surprisingly delicious fava bean puree, with mixed greens. The blending of flavors is perfect. The service here is also attentive and responsive, and there are tables available on a balcony overlooking the Plaza illuminated at night. Pacha Papa

For a taste of true traditional Peruvian Andean fare I would recommend Pacha Papa off the San Blas Plaza. The simple but elegant restaurant has a beautiful courtyard for eating outside when the weather is nice (a pretty good bet anytime between mid-April to mid-November), and a small but inviting inside dining room. The heart of the restaurant is the massive dome-shaped clay oven where the traditional dishes cooked in earthenware pots are set to simmer over a wood fire. The rich taste of the fresh ingredients slow-cooked in this style to create a kind of stew is amazing. The service here is also fantastic, ready to pour another glass of wine or respond to any request with cat-like reflexes. Invoking a rustic highland ambience, this open courtyard with wooden tables serves up well-prepared Peruvian classics, it’s also livened by a harpist on weekends. It’s a good spot to try buttered corn in herbs, aji de gallina, or oven-fired trout. Cuy should be ordered in advance. Street Plazoleta Plaza San Blas 120 Telephone: +51 84 24 1318

MAP Café

Cusco's most surprisingly modern restaurant is tucked into the colonial patio of the city's great pre-Columbian art museum. It quietly makes a dramatic statement with its minimalist design. In the evening, the interior of the cube is lit by an abundance of candles further adding to both the elegance and welcoming nature of the site. The warm candle lighting, the intimate number of tables, and live Andean harp music set the stage for a unique evening of fine dining. To kick things off, three distinct appetizers were brought out and each was filled with unique flavors and textures, tempting all the senses. The Novo Andino dishes are every bit as elegant and cleanly presented. With a super wine list and the opportunity to stroll through the museum after dinner, it makes a perfect, sophisticated date spot, but keep in mind that it's Cusco's most expensive restaurant.
