required SLOs to be matched to all items in the Course Outline of Record (COR). Dee asked if we are requiring objectives to be matched to SLOs. Julie Clark stated at one time the SLO Coordinator required objectives to be matched with SLOs, so most people opted out of listing objectives. Now having objectives is so good, we advise faculty to match SLOs to objectives, but do not require it.

asked that now that the Distance Education Substantive Change Proposal has been approved by ACCJC can these courses continue with the request to add Distance Education. Julie Clark stated no, since this program was not a part of the proposal, we could not include a program in the proposal that has not been approved by the curriculum committee and our Board of Trustees. Jodie asked what is the procedure to get this program approved for Distance Education. Julie stated that next year we can submit a new Distance Education Substantive Change Proposal to ACCJC that includes the Geography program and if approved we can proceed to approving the courses for Distance Education. Julie also commented that we cannot discuss this at this time since it is not on the agenda.

Dee Near commented that in an email sent by Julie Clark earlier this week it

stated that CSU-GE/IGETC will be changing the format of Area D Social Science and that we might want to consider making those same changes to our GE pattern.

B. Program Modifications per Chancellor’s Office Request (1) A.A.-T. Elementary Teacher Education

Item 7A.1 (A.A. Human Services) was pulled by Luis Flores. Luis stated that the

third paragraph sounded awkward and suggested removing the semicolon and “students”. Greg Soto stated it should state “California State Universities” not California State Colleges”. After a short discussion it was suggested to amend the third paragraph in the description to state “a 4-year university” instead of “one of the California State Colleges or at the University of California; students”.

Dee Near asked is the department was planning to offer the A.S.-T. in Social Work that is currently being vented at the state level. Jeanie Clifford stated they do plan to add the A.A.-T. in Social Work and that it might include making some adjustments to our course work to fit C-ID Descriptors.

Item 7B.1 (A.A.-T. Elementary Teacher Education) was pulled by Dee Near. Dee

asked if there is way to verify the HIST-04A has been submitted for C-ID HIST 150. Julie Clark logged into C-ID website and showed that HIST-04A has been submitted for the C-ID requested. Julie stated the only course that has not been submitted is PHSC-02, 02L and that is due to the timing in which Lou can submit it. Julie stated that Lou should be able to submit it by Monday November 24th.

Amend the third paragraph in the description of Item 7A.1 (A.A. Human Services) to state “a 4-year university” instead of “one of the California State Colleges or at the University of California; students”.

9. CONSENT AGENDA 5 A. Special Topics Courses

(1) DRAM-70K (Advanced Topics in Costume Design) 2 units: 1 hour lecture, 3 hours lab.

This course offers the second year student the opportunity to develop their skills in Costume Design and Construction, focusing on new and more complex character study and script analysis. a. Courses Related in Content: Theatre Design and Technology

Dee Near commented that historically we have not seen Special Topics courses

come through this committee. Dee stated that she has had a talk with Julie Clark and that we will be seeing a Senate Resolution forth coming that outlines the changes. Myshel Pimentel asked why was the changes made. Julie Clark stated that all curriculum items are to be approved by the committee in opening meeting and not behind closed doors by non faculty members. Mary Gilliland stated that this also had to do with repeatability. Julie stated we need to ensure that all special topics courses are distinctly different than anything we currently have in our catalogs. Julie also stated that for Physical Education and Fine and Performing Art courses they also have to belong to “Courses Related in Content”. John Albano commented that the hours for this DRAM-70K are different than the hours for DRAM-16, that will cause a scheduling issue and he needs to work with Cain Heidelbach to address that. Dee Near stated that maybe the advanced class does not need as much lecture as the beginner class.

Approve Consent Agenda 9A, as required by Title 5, effective Summer 2015.

Also if a program is listed as “Transfer” we must include an AAM (Articulation Agreement by Major) from ASSIST that shows that 51% of our program is required at the transferring institution. The only one on this list that has been an issue is Biotechnology: Pre-Professional since we have not found an AAM, we are waiting a response from UC Davis to hopefully accept our courses.

12. BUSINESS

A. Information: 2014 CSU-GE/IGETC Submissions Julie Clark presented to the committee the list of submissions that the committee

approved last year. Julie also commented on the upcoming changes. One change is how physical activity courses no longer need to be submitted for CSU-GE Area E, Articulation Officers just inform ASSIST of these requests. A second change is the one Dee Near stated earlier and that is the Social Science sections for both CSU-GE and IGETC will just be one list instead of 10 different subtopics. Julie asked faculty to look this list over and advise her and Lou Ferguson of any corrections by December 1st.

B. Discussion: Credit by Exam Catalog Statements and Procedures

Julie Clark stated that she worked last year with Bob Lenz and Everett Lovelace to correct the statement in the catalog regarding how Credit by Exam courses can be used towards a major requirement and that only external examination cannot count towards a major requirement.

Stacey Roduner stated that one problem with Child Development is 2+2 course agreements have been denied from fulfilling major requirements.

Mary Gilliland suggested we bring these issues to Vice President Chis Vitelli’s attention.

Dee Near stated that 2+2 course agreements are not Credit by Exam and do qualify for fulfilling major requirements.

Greg Soto stated that while external examination cannot apply to fulfilling major requirements for the AA-T/AS-T degrees they can be used to fulfill CSU-GE/IGETC requirements. Currently students are being denied.

Mary Gilliland asked who is responsible for correcting these issues. Dee Near stated this needs to come from a Vice President.

Julie Clark stated that the senate resolution that Dee Near wrote is ready to go to senate and will be passed on to Dee Sigismond.

C. Information: English Curriculum Changes – Pam Huntington and Myshel Pimentel

Pam Huntington gave the committee a brief explanation of what changes are coming to English curriculum. One is the elimination of the lab portion of courses; all courses will be straight lecture. Second pedagogically they are integrating the reading course into the writing course to reduce the number of units and courses students must take. Third they are creating an accelerated course ENGL-85C (CurricUNET calls it ENGL-85X) that will have no prerequisites, so a student can walk in and in one semester go into ENGL-01A. Lastly create an ESL track, which includes the same courses as the other track but for ESL students.

Dee Near stated that students are limited to 30-units of basic skills financial aid between both English and mathematics courses. Currently English has 23-units of basic skills and mathematics has 14-units. Dee asked the faculty to please consider making ENGL-85 an associate level course. Currently students go straight from basic skills level to transfer level, with no course in between.

John Albano recommended having a broader college dialog on English and mathematics curriculum. These courses affect the entire school and not just their individual disciplines.

Kevin Kistler stated that generally we have left curriculum up to the discipline faculty. Kevin also stated that we can this discuss at Student Success meeting what are considered basic skills, associate level, and transfer level courses.

Jeanie Clifford commented on how long it takes students complete our programs due to the lengthy process to get to transfer level courses. Jeanie asked if this model is being used at any other institute and/or is the faculty looking to model other institutes, like Modesto which only goes two levels below transfer. Myshel Pimentel stated they are lowering the overall units a student must take to get to the transfer level.

Greg Soto questioned the sequencing and unit value of the new courses being proposed. Pam Huntington stated that ENGL-83A and ENGL-84A will be 6-units each, while ENGL-85A and ENGL-85C will be 5-units each. Greg asked why a student would want to take the ENGL-83A, ENGL-84A, ENGL-85A sequence if they can take a one 5-unit course ENGL-85C to get into ENGL-01A. Pam stated these are for the exceptional students that only need a quick refresher to get into ENGL-01A. Greg stated that students will then blame the counselors for taking a course they are not prepared for.

Luis Flores asked about what the status is at the state level about creating C-ID for Basic Skills courses. Pam Huntington stated that the state has not finalized these but they are coming. Once the courses are finalized we will have to see where our courses place in the grid.

Myshel Pimentel stated that someone in her department stated that the senate some time ago made them change ENGL-A to a basic skills course.

No Report

B. IPRSLOAC – Patrick Mitchell Patrick Mitchell wanted to clarify the issue of surveys. In a report from Mathew Lee

it states that we are only required to have a direct measure. Surveys can still be used as an indirect measure and are especially useful in classes with multiple sections.

C. Distance Education – Ray Latham

Jodie Steeley commented that they are currently working on building a public webpage, which will contain assistance to students enrolled and those considering enrolling in online classes. Jodie stated one new item is a “Readiness Quiz” for student to see if they are ready for online courses.
