SCHELLER - We are deeply saddened by the passing of Eileen Margaret Scheller on Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, Yorkton, SK. She was 84 years of age. Eileen was born on March 26, 1931, in the Springside district of Saskatchewan, the youngest daughter of Joseph and Mary (nee Sanderson) Gruber. She was raised on the family farm and attended Good Luck School. After completing her education, she worked as a tele- phone operator in Springside for the Evans, then Yanke families. On May 1, 1949, Eileen married Samuel Scheller and the couple made their home in Springside. From 1958 to 1972, Eileen and Sam spent the summer months as the caretakers of Good Spirit Provincial Park. In December 1965 Eileen took over the Theodore Tele- phone Exchange, then three years later purchased the Windjack Farm southwest of Theodore. In 1968 the Theodore Telephone

Exchange was automated, which resulted in the family relocating to Yorkton, enabling her to continue working for SaskTel. In 1983 Eileen retired and returned to the farm where she and Sam farmed until his passing in 1992. Eileen then moved into the town of Springside where she remained until 2014, when she became a resident of Aspen Bluff Villa in Yorkton. Eileen was a very active community supporter and participated in the 4-H Club, Legion Ladies Auxiliary and curling events. For 18 years she was the treasurer of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Family was very important to Eileen and prior to moving to Springside, she willingly took on the respon- sibility of raising her granddaughter, Kimberly from elementary school through to her graduation. Eileen was predeceased by her husband, Sam; her parents, Joseph and Martha; a brother, Frank and sister, Elsie, in infancy; sisters, Evelyn Schmidt and Marelyn Matkowski; brothers, Elmer, Wilfred and Joseph Gruber; son, Sheldon in infancy and son, Bradley in 2005. She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Raymond and wife, Margaret and children, Pamela (Kyle) Fletcher, Brent and Jody; her daughter-in-law (Bradley’s wife), Susan and children, Bryan (Cheryl), Sheldon (Dorothy) and Corey; her son, Murray and wife, Brenda and their children, Neil (Marcia) and Delee (Mark) McPherson; her son, Terry and his children, Kimberly, Brittney (Tyler) Oshaway and Candace; as well as sixteen great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and good friends. A Memorial Service was held on Friday, May 22, 2015 from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Springside, SK with Pastor Daniel Moeller officiating. The organist, Jean Payne, led the congregation in the singing of the hymns, “Amazing Grace”, “Softly and Tenderly” and “How Great Thou Art”. A reception followed in the Springside Town Hall where Eileen’s grandson, Neil Scheller shared words of tribute and eulogy. The private family cremation committal took place in the Springside Town Cemetery with Pastor Daniel Moeller officiating and Eileen’s grand- daughter, Kimberly Scheller serving as the urn bearer. Friends so wishing may forward their condolences to the family by visiting www.christiesfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yorkton, Saskatchewan.

After farming for 32 years in Sheho they semi-retired to Yorkton where Anne worked for A&W as a cook for many years and enjoyed it. She also made a quilt for each grandchild and great-grandchild which they will cherish for- ever the quilts made by Boona. Your wife Edith and all the rest of the family.

And somehow get methrough.

NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATEMUNICIPAL HERITAGE PROPERTYThe Heritage Property Act S.S. 1979-80, c.H-2.2.s 11(2)(b)

Notice is hereby given that not less than thirty (30) days from the date of service of this notice, the Council of the Rural Municipality of Sliding Hills No. 273 intends to pass a bylaw pursuant to the provisions of The Heritage Property Act, to designating the property known as:

The St. Elias Orthodox Church

Legally described as:All that portion of the North West quarter of Section Four (4) in Township Twenty-eight (28) in Range One (1) West of the Second Meridian, in the Province of Saskatchewan, in the Dominion of Canada, containing Two and seventy three hundredths (2.73) acres more or less, as detailed by Surface Parcel Number 151796324,

and located:In the southeast corner of the R.M. of Sliding Hills No. 273, more specifi cally located approximately 6.5 km east of the Village of Rhein then 5 km north.

As Municipal Heritage Property under Sections 11 and 12 of The Heritage Property Act, as amended from time to time.

The reasons for the proposed designation are as follows:1. To assist in the maintenance and preservation of the church and

the signifi cant cultural and historic integrity of the property.2. Of special signifi cance is the St. Elias Orthodox Church style,

a Canadian adaptation of churches in the Boyko region of Ukraine. Particularly rare is the continuous wide eave midway between the ground and the roof, designed to protect the lower walls from the elements.

3. This church was constructed in 1912 and still stands today and marks the cultural and historic signifi cance of the church and cemetery for the enjoyment of others today.

4. Adding to the value of this cultural and historic site is the fact that St. Elias is one of few pioneer churches in Canada to still include the Boyko-style mid-wall eave.

Anyone objecting to the proposed designation may submit a statement of objection, in writing, to the Municipal Administrator not less than (3) days prior to consideration of the bylaw.

Dated this 27th day of May, 2015.

Todd Steele, AdministratorRural Municipality of Sliding Hills No. 273

PLAN NUMBER 2-3-758

ATTRACTIVE TWO STOREY HOME

The facade of this attractive two-storey home features glass-panelled balcony rail-ings on the upper floor, as well as a stucco fin-ish on the lower part and wood siding on the upper part. Brick accents high-light the entrance. The plans include space for a future secondary suite on the ground floor.

A covered entry leads through to a front door with generous sidelights into a foyer with a coat closet on the left. Ahead and to the right is an

L-shaped staircase lead-ing up to the main living area.

Upstairs, the great room features a lofty 11-foot ceiling, as well as a gas fireplace and large windows that over-look the sundeck and front garden. The dining area enjoys access to the sundeck through sliding glass doors, and includes an optional buffet that will be handy for serv-ing and storage. A nar-row window is located between the dining area and the kitchen.

The open-plan kitch-en is designed for effi-ciency, with an L-shaped counter configuration.

It is separated from the great room and dining area by a work island with more counter space and a double sink. The corner pantry will pro-vide extra space for stor-ing canned and packaged goods.

The roomy master suite, also overlook-ing the front garden, includes an en-suite with double sinks and a soaker tub, as well as a glassed-in shower stall. The generous walk-in closet includes a space to store jewelry.

The second and third bedrooms overlook the back garden and share a three-piece bath. A linen

cupboard is located out-side the second bedroom, while a broom closet is around the corner from bedroom no. 3.

Downstairs, a study is located off the foyer, with the laundry room adjacent, as well as the roughed-in future sec-ondary suite. The foyer has access to the double garage, which is roomy enough to accommodate a storage area.

The best of Canadian TVView from the Cheap

Seats is kind of an exten-sion of the newsroom. Whenever our three regular reporters, Calvin Daniels, Thom Barker and Randy Brenzen are in the build-ing together, it is frequent-ly a site of heated debate. This week: In honour of the Yorkton Film Festival what is the best Canadian Television show ever made?

No mystery hereThis week, we tackle

the best Canadian tele-vision shows ever made in honour of the Yorkton Film Festival.

At first glance, it seems like it might be a pretty shallow pool, but when you get down and really think about it, there is a pretty lengthy tradition of quality pro-gramming in this country.

And what about the grand Canadian trad-ition of comedy? Corner Gas, SCTV, King of Kensington, The Kids in the Hall, CODCO, This Hour Has 22 minutes, The Newsroom and Little Mosque on the Prairie, just to scratch the sur-face. I will not, cannot, am loathe to, include Trailer Park Boys. Despite its popularity, let’s face it, that show is complete and utter crap.

There have been innovative and deeply loved kids shows like Mr. Dressup, The Friendly Giant and Fraggle Rock.

And, what celebration of Canadian television would be complete with-out the internationally award-winning genre of news and documentary including This Week Has 7 Days, Adrienne Clarkson Presents, W5, The Fifth Estate, Daily Planet, The Agenda with Steve Paikin and The Nature of Things.

So, what might appear to be a no-brainer, turns out to be a difficult choice. When it comes to awards shows, however, drama is king and com-edy, children’s series and documentaries are rel-egated to genre status.

There have been great dramas. The Littlest Hobo, Da Vinci’s Inquest, The Border, North of 60, The Degrassi fran-chises and The Tudors leap to mind. And, of course, who could forget

The Beachcombers. For all the flack and joking around about that ser-ies, it was full of great characters and quintes-sentially Canadian.

For me, there are two Canadian dramas that stand head and shoul-ders above the rest. And, the runner up is: Street Legal. This courtroom drama originally ran from 1987 to 1994, but I didn’t discover it until after I had gotten into the news business. It was really refreshing to see a legal drama that (more or less, with dramatic licence) accurately depicts the Canadian justice system. Plus, I developed a bit of a crush on Cynthia Dale (apologies to Peter Mansbridge).

My number one Canadian television show of all time, though, has to be Murdoch Mysteries.

It is smart and funny. It weaves what was then, at the turn of the 20th century, emerging sci-ence into good, old-fash-ioned detective stories with compelling nar-ratives and excellent screenwriting. It tackles social issues of the day and relates them back to the present.

The acting is excep-tional with no shortage of cameos from famous non-actors and a pleth-ora of stories involving real historical figures in fictional roles.

Murdoch Mysteries is a great show and has achieved massive popu-larity both at home and abroad.

Heading North of 60Whenever you start

talking about the ‘best-of’ anything, you are in for some debate and argu-ment.

In this case the idea of picking the best Canadian television ser-ies led to a number of inner debates.

The first was deter-mining what type of ser-ies should legitimately

be considered.There have, as an

example, been a number of high profile comedies through the years, with the more recent Corner Gas and Little Mosque on the Prairies coming to mind.

Better than both the above were King of Kensington and Beachcombers, the latter the best if the genre, but I can’t quite think of a comedy as the best pro-duced.

Then there are shows for children. The Friendly Giant, Chez Helen and Mr. Dressup were a big part of my younger days, and all were long-running and excellent. But again even Mr. Dressup falls a bit short in terms of best Canadian television ser-ies.

Which brings me to the realm of the one-hour drama.

While we sometimes belittle the quality of Canadian film, there have been a number of stel-lar series over the years which have rivalled their American-made peers.

Currently the Murdoch Mysteries, which hap-pens to be based on a series of books by a Canadian author is easily the best Canadian drama on TV.

The Border, which aired 2008-2010 was very well done, as was the same era Flashpoint.

And from there the list extending back grows rather quickly with some first rate options, among them Street Legal and Da Vinci’s Inquest, the lat-ter having a seven-season run and still seen in syn-dication.

But the best for me remains North of 60 which aired from 1992 through ’98.

The show was “set in the fictional community of Lynx River, a primarily Native-run town depicted as being in the Dehcho R e g i o n , N o r t h w e s t

Territories,” noted Wikipedia.”Most of the characters were Dene. Some non-native char-acters had important roles: the restaurant/motel owner, the bandmanager, the nurse and(during the show’s first season) the town’s main RCMP officer.”

What made the ser-ies stand out then, and makes it my choice here is that it explored themes of Native poverty, alco-holism, cultural preser-vation and conflict overland settlements and natural resource exploit-ation, issues of import-ance then just as theyare today. It was welldone, and powerful, andas good as TV from any country gets.

- Calvin Daniels

Straight to the creaseThere are many dif-

ferent shows one couldchoose when it comes to what the best Canadiantelevision show of all-time is.

Corner Gas is one thatinstantly comes to mindfor its perfect displayof just what small town Saskatchewan exactly is.Let’s be honest, everyoneknows a Brent, an Oscar or a Hank.

But while Corner Gasis, in my mind brilliant television, my personalchoice for best Canadiantelevision show is onethat existed for just threeseasons from 2006-2008 and only aired very late on a Friday or Saturdaynight on Showcase, a channel known more forits inappropriate tele-vision than its intelligentand witty programs.

The show: Rent-a-Goalie, filmed in Toronto and starring ChristopherBolton as Cake, a man who runs a business in which he rents goalies out to local beer league teams.

It’s a rude comedywith very lowbrowhumour (VERY low-brow), however I feel it’s underappreciated and Iwas actually saddened when I had found out itwas cancelled.

I’m sure my colleagues will select shows that are much more well-known,but whatever they chooserest assured it won’t beas good as Rent-a-Goalie.

—Randy Brenzen

Stubble burnYorkton Fire Protective Services responded to a crop stubble fire that con-sumed the better part of a quarter section (160 acres) of crop stubble and cat tails just east of Yorkton on Hwy 10 May 20. A fuel truck being used to refuel tractors experienced a mechanical failure and caught fire. Recent dry weather and a substantial wind provided perfect condi-tions for the blaze to spread. Ultimately, the fire was contained by letting it burn toward a slough on the south and using deep tillage of the soil to prevent it from spreading north and east.
