Proven Technology.

Every Challenge. Met.

The challenge to balance the needs of the

environment with the expectations of marine

operators has been met by the Quantum System

MCRS engine family. This line of marine high

horsepower engines is not only certified to the

more stringent EPA Tier 2, EU Stg IIIa and IMO

Tier II emissions standards, but also delivers

superior durability and reliability over other

products in its class.

Before designing the next generation of Quantum

System engines, we asked customers around

the world what was important. We committed

ourselves to delivering results that will meet

or exceed their expectations by integrating

customer feedback into all aspects of the

design, technology and support package. The

outcome is a line of engines that delivers durable,

reliable marine power for propulsion and auxiliary

applications.

The QSK MCRS engine family features common

technology components designed to endure the

harsh marine environment, offer lower emissions

and also meet Marine Classification Society

requirements. The products build on the well-

earned reputation of the KTA19, KTA38 and

KTA50 marine engines as the proven leaders in

high hour, high load factor applications.

The Right Technology Matters.

Using advanced in-

cylinder combustion

technology, QSK MCRS

engines meet global emissions

requirements. Cummins exclusive

Modular Common Rail Fuel System

(MCRS) provides constant high

pressure injection regardless of engine

speed or load condition. The fuel system is

designed for durable, dependable performance

with an integral accumulator in the injector and

double-wall fuel lines. The benefits include

significantly reduced noise and vibration for

quiet operation, plus exceptional speed

control.

Tested. Certified. In-Service.

Extensive testing ensures Cummins engines

meet stringent performance and emissions

requirements—in fact, our Quantum System

engines undergo rigorous testing in state-of-

the-art test cells designed to simulate marine

operating conditions. Plus, we gain valuable

performance and engine-to-vessel integration

data by field testing each product in demanding

marine applications, ensuring they will meet or

exceed your expectations and provide years of

trouble-free service. Today, QSK19, 38, 50 and

60 engines are powering tugs, inland waterway

vessels, crewboats and passenger vessels across

the globe.

Proven Quantum System electronics ensure that

the engine operates at peak performance with

enhanced engine protection. The Electronic

Control Module (ECM) monitors fuel injection and

manages critical systems while providing real-

time engine diagnostics. Integrated information

systems help maximize operation by providing

diagnostic and prognostic capabilities and

monitoring critical parameters such as engine

load, duty cycle, speed and

fuel consumption.

World-class reliability and

durability are achieved with

a combination of features.

An advanced power cylinder

with a single-piece cast-iron

piston, ceramic coated rings

and premium cylinder liners

delivers extended life and

reduces maintenance.

The exhaust system includes a

water-cooled exhaust manifold and turbocharger.

This helps to cool engine surface temperatures

and eliminate exhaust leakage without sacrificing

fuel economy or performance. This ensures that

Classification Society and SOLAS requirements

are met.

The Best Value.

Engine Features and Benefits.

QSK MCRS engines feature a variety of

mechanical and electronic features to help

manage the cost of operation, reduce

maintenance and tailor the engine for a specific

vessel application.

Mechanical Features.

Titanium Plate Heat Exchanger ■ and

Seawater Pump enhance performance,

reliability and serviceability.

Front PTO Capability ■ is available to drive

a variety of pumps, winches and other

aftermarket accessories.

Gear Oil Cooling ■ on the QSK19 is integrated

into the engine, eliminating the need for

external coolers.

Robust Fuel Filtration ■ provides protection

for vital fuel system components.

A range of ■ Exhaust Outlet Connections are

available, making Quantum System engines

suitable for a variety of applications.

Cummins ELIMINATOR ■ ™ and CENTINEL™

can extend or eliminate oil drain intervals,

reducing downtime and costs for lube system

maintenance.

Electronic Features.

Constant Power Band ■ facilitates better

propeller matching by producing constant

power from rated speed to rated-plus-100-

RPM.

Percent Power ■ digitally broadcasts available

power for better management of vessel

operation based on fueling and speed.

Alternate Low Idle ■ offers better

maneuverability by reducing engine idle speed

to 550 rpm.

Intermediate Speed Control ■ provides

flexibility to run two predefined engine speed

set points.

Water in Fuel Sensor ■ detects water prior

to entry into the main fuel system and

annunciates an alarm.

Gear Oil Pressure Monitoring ■ protects

against damage caused by low oil pressure

by derating the engine.

Speed Bias ■ and Frequency Adjust utilize

industry-standard interfaces on marine

auxiliary engines for packaging ease.

Enhanced Engine Protection

Quantum System engines provide basic engine

protection features including Intake Manifold

Temperature, Oil Pressure, Coolant Temperature,

Coolant Level and Engine Overspeed, as well as

enhanced engine protection for added peace of

mind.

Crankcase Pressure Monitoring ■ detects

potential engine problems due to power

cylinder wear.

Exhaust Stack Temperature Monitoring ■

monitors the average cylinder temperature,

protecting your engine against thermally

abusive conditions.

Individual Cylinder EGT Monitoring ■ is also

available on the QSK38/50/60 engines.

Shutdown Override Switch ■ allows the

vessel operator to temporarily disable engine

protection shutdown.

Electronic Information System

To maximize the benefits of Quantum System

electronics, Cummins introduced C Command,

a selection of monitoring and display options

that provide instantaneous access to operating

information on board or for export to vessel

management systems.

C Command ■ basic systems offer a modular

solution for cost-effective monitoring and

control.

C Command Elite ■ premium systems feature

color touch screen control and customizable

displays.

C Command Elite Plus ■ integrated classed

alarm and safety systems are offered to meet

Classification Society requirements.

Every Installation

In order to meet customer requests for ease of

installation, Cummins developed an in-cylinder

emissions solution and used a similar engine

envelope and footprint, ratings and optional

equipment as the legendary K-series product.

Plus, all electrical interface connections have been

centralized in a Customer Interface Box (CIB).

These features reduce installation complexity,

making the Quantum Systems engines well-suited

for marine repower situations.

Every Commitment.

We recognize

that it’s not just

about investing in

engine technology.

Equally important

is the investment

we make in our

application and

service capability.
