THE QUEST FORTHE PERFECT CUPOF COFFEE

It is generally agreed that there are four basicelements critical to the perfect cup of coffee:

    Element 1: Water

Coffee is 98% water. Often overlooked, thequality of the water is as important as thequality of the coffee. A good rule of thumb isthat if your water doesnt taste good from thetap, it wont taste any better in your coffee.Thats why Cuisinart has added a water filterto the Grind & Brew Thermal AutomaticCoffeemaker. The charcoal water filter removes

chlorine, bad tastes and odors, for the purestcup of coffee every time.

    Element 2: Coffee

While the bulk of the liquid is water, all of theflavor should be from the coffee. To achievethe same great quality cup of coffee youreceive at a coffee bar, you need to use thesame quality beans.

Buy the beans fresh and whole, only about

two weeks supply at a time for maximumfreshness. Once the coffee bean is broken, its flavor degrades very quickly. Thats whythe Grind & Brew Thermal grinds your coffeejust prior to brewing. If it is not practical to buysmall supplies, we recommend you separatelarger amounts of beans into one to two weekportions immediately after purchase, and freezethem in airtight containers. The best way tomaximize freshness is to minimize exposureto air, light and moisture. So, once beans havebeen removed from the freezer, maintain themin a sealed container at room temperature, since damaging condensation occurs everytime the beans are removed from the freezeror refrigerator. Note that some coffee expertsadvise against freezing dark-roast beans, because freezing can cause the oils tocoagulate. Other experts disagree. We suggestyou experiment and decide for yourself.

    Element 3: Grind

The grind is critical for proper flavor extraction. If the grind is too fine, overextraction andbitterness will result. Too fine a grind may alsoclog the filter. If grind is too coarse, the waterwill pass through too quickly and the desiredflavors will not be extracted. The Grind & BrewThermal is preset for a medium grind, theoptimal grind for this type of coffeemaker.

    Element 4: Proportion

The Grind & Brew Thermal makes up toten (10) 5-ounce cups of coffee.

    Using Whole Beans:

We recommend you use 1 scoop of wholebeans per cup. Maximum 14 scoops.

For 1 or 2 cups, use 1-1/2 level scoopsper cup. Adjust the recipe accordingto individual taste.

DO NOT OVERFILL OR THE GRINDERCOULD MALFUNCTION AND/OR THECOFFEEMAKER COULD OVERFLOW.

    Using Pre-Ground Coffee:

Although it is preferable to use fresh, wholebeans, you can make coffee in the Grind &Brew Thermal using pre-ground beans.

To do so, turn off the grinder by pressing theGrind Off button before turning on the unit.

    Our recipe:

We suggest that you use 1 level scoop ofground coffee per cup. Adjust the recipe toyour taste.

NOTE: The maximum capacity for groundcoffee is 16 level scoops, using either apaper or permanent filter. Exceeding this

    amount may cause overflow.

(Use 1 level scoop of whole beans per cup.For 1 to 4 cups, use 1-1/2 level scoops percup. Maximum capacity is 14 level scoops.Do not overfill or the grinder couldmalfunction and/or the coffeemakermay overflow. This is our suggested recipe.Adjust the recipe to taste.)

    3. Open Filter DoorPlace a #4 basket paper filter or Cuisinarts

commercial style permanent filter inthe basket.

Note: When using the Cuisinart filter, besure that the filter handle is facing awayfrom the grinder basket. If you do not doso, the handle may interfere with the flowof ground coffee into the filter basket. Also note: a permanent filter may allowsome ground coffee to flow into carafe.

The filter holder will help to keep the filteropen, but when using a paper filter, be surethat the filter is completely open whiletouching the side walls and bottom ofthe basket.

Place filter basket lid in place. Close filter door.

    4. Close the Reservoir Lid

Press down to lock. The Grind & Brew

    Thermal

Automatic coffeemaker is equippedwith a Safety Interlock System. The Grind &Brew Thermal coffeemaker will not operate ifthe cover of the unit is open or the grindercover is left out. If you try to turn the unit onwith the cover open, the unit will beep continu-ously until the missing parts are installed andyou close the lid. The unit will also beep if youopen the lid during the brewing process.

The grinder will stop grinding or, if brewing, thebrewing will stop. Once the missing parts are

    5. Before Brewing Coffee

Remove thermal carafe lid by turning in thedirection of the unlock arrow. Prewarm carafeby rinsing it out with hot water. PREWARMINGTHE CARAFE WILL HELP KEEP THECOFFEE HOTTER.

Return the carafe lid to the carafe. To lock thelid, turn in the direction of the lock arrow untilit fits tightly on carafe and arrow lines up in the

center of the pour spout. This ensures lid isclosed and in the proper position for brewingand pouring.

Make sure you have replaced the thermalcarafe in its position on the resting plateand have placed a filter in the filter basket.Plug the cord into an electrical outlet. 12:00will appear until you set the time. This will notinterfere with the operation of the coffeemaker. To set clock, see the Programming YourCoffeemaker section, page 8.

the button is released. To set the programmedtime, see Programming Your Coffeemakeron page 8.

    7. Select Cups Setting

The 1-4 cup setting button is used whenyou make small amounts of coffee. Normalcoffeemakers will produce a colder batch ofcoffee when smaller amounts are made, because the heater doesn't have enough timeto properly warm up to heat a small amount.

The 1-4 setting basically double heats thewater, making your smaller amount as pipinghot as a full pot would be.

To use: When making a smaller amount, press the 1-4 button on the control panelafter turning on the unit. The indicator light will

illuminate. Note that the 1-4 button can be setat any time.

    8. During and After Brewing

The Brew Pause feature allows you to removethe carafe during mid-brew. The brewingprocess does not stop during this period; onlythe flow of coffee from the basket stops. Donot remove the carafe for longer than 30seconds or the coffee may overflow thebasket. While we offer this feature, we do notrecommend that you pour coffee before the

cycle has reached completion, since the coffeebrewed at the beginning of the cycle has aflavor profile which is very different from thecoffee made at the end of the cycle. Removinga cup during the brewing cycle will alter theflavor of the finished pot.

Once the coffee has finished brewing, stir itbefore serving to blend the flavors. The coffeeat the bottom of the carafe will be somewhatstronger than the coffee at the top.

When the brewing cycle has been completed,

five beeps will sound. Coffee will continueto stream from the filter for several seconds.

After brewing, the unit will automatically shutitself off. The thermal carafe will keep thecoffee hot for hours.

Bottom of Thermal Carafe is hot to touchfor several minutes after brewing.Use caution.

The brew-through, pour-through lid allowscoffee to drip from coffeemaker through the

closed lid. When brewing is complete, thelid seals itself so air stays out and coffeefreshness and temperature are preserved. Noneed to turn or adjust the lid before pouring.
