Principal’s Message Continued

I hope to see you at NRMS when we host a community meeting to discuss the upcoming Bond Issue that will

be on the May ballot. This meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 11, at 7:00 PM. Please take a moment to

familiarize yourself with the needs of our school buildings by visiting our district website and clicking on the

links.

Finally, we are already beginning to plan for the next school year. Algebra placement tests have been given to

eligible students in grades 6 and 7 and foreign language determinations are being made for eligible seventh

graders for their 8th

grade year. As always, we appreciate your continued support of North Royalton Middle

School!

North Royalton Middle School PTA Meeting Minutes February 26, 2014

Call to Order: Lynn Dorman, President 10:34 a.m.

Pledge and Welcome

GUEST SPEAKERS –

Joseph Krzywicki – a Boy Scout from Troop 526 is asking for a donation for his Eagle Scout project which is adding

picnic tables, bird feeders and identification cards to improve the nature center at Valley Vista; he is requesting $100.

Greg Gurka, Superintendent – Good morning everybody, thank you for allowing me to speak this morning. Just to give

you an update, there was a water line break in front of the high school today. Our maintenance dept. and the city salted,

and the water dept. turned it off, there is no problem in the school. It is our water line, so we will have to have it dug up &

repaired. The bond issue is on the ballot for May 6. As parents we have the obligation to our kids and our schools.

“Decisions are made by those who show up”, is a favorite line of mine. We need to show up on May 6. Parents need to

make sure they’re registered to vote and have an absentee ballot; even those with the best of intentions may have

something that comes up on Election Day that may keep them from the polls. Only 60% of our parents are registered to

vote; only 30% voted in the last election. We have weekly emails going out, please pass those to others and we can add

anyone to the list who wishes.

Nellie Wislocki – I’m working with a parent group (PASS) that is trying to help with the passing of the bond issue. We

have signs that you can put in your window or car window, we have voter registration and information tables at various

community events. If you would like to publicly support the bond issue, I have a sign-up sheet. Our next meeting will be

here at the library Monday, March 3rd

at 1:00 p.m., and, Thursday, March 7th at 6:00 p.m. also at the North Royalton

Public Library.

Kristin Brooks – we’re here today to remind you that we have an internet safety talk coming up on March 12 for adults

only at 7:00 p.m. at NRMS. At 6:00 p.m. a pizza dinner will be served to families, and then free babysitting will be

offered. The presenter is Jessie Weinberger. Please RSVP to [email protected].

SECRETARY’S REPORT – Mary Ellen Watrobski – January minutes were posted, no changes or additions to be

made.

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY’S REPORT – Jen Porter – Feb. birthday cards were delivered. We have a note

from Mr. Fancescone to thank us for helping with the American Heart Association fundraiser.

TREASURER’S REPORT – Sandy Mraz - Balance on hand: $20,470.32

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Mrs. Vojta – The Power of the Pen 8th grade team will advance to the regional comp, three

7th grade writers will also advance. We’re very proud of them! There were 273 students competing in the last

competition.

Our equations team took 1st place overall, we also had several individual award winners.

I’d like to thank everyone for their help with the talent shows, they were absolutely outstanding! We could not do

it without the help of the parents.

I’d like to thank everyone for the help the winter tailgate party.

We currently doing a lot of benchmarking, Cogats, foreign language placement, and the Iowa Algebra Aptitude

Test.

Tomorrow is early release day, our students are dismissed at 2:00 p.m. Our teachers will be doing what we call

vertical alignment, so they will meet with their own grade level colleagues as well as have time to meet with colleagues in

the other grades, including the 4th grade teachers from the elementary schools.

I have some materials for you today regarding OAAs that will be replaced by PARCC starting next year. This

information is from the ODE website and the PARCC website, so you can find more info there. These will be computer

based assessments. We are spending time during our meetings to plan for these new testing procedures, and how to best

Page 4: Cub Chronicle - North Royalton Middle School · February 2014 Cub Chronicle Page 3 of 13 North Royalton Middle School PTA Meeting Minutes February 26, 2014 Call to Order: Lynn Dorman,

February 2014 Cub Chronicle Page 4 of 13 prepare the students for these test taking skills as well as the content of the tests. The Common Core initiatives will start

being implemented next school year.

Next year we will test in two different segments. One segment will be at the end of Feb. and one will be at the end of

April, but math and reading will be given at both times.

We currently have enough computers for half of the students to take the test. We need to see how we can

schedule all of these test for the entire student body. Our schedules will definitely be impacted. As I get more information

I will try to keep you informed.

There will be communication coming out regarding breakfast. We have always offered breakfast in the mornings,

but we are revamping what we do. Because breakfast is so important, we are trying to increase the participation of

students eating in the morning. Next week is national school breakfast week, so on Wed. we are kicking off our initiative

to give kids more access to it. There will be “grab & go bags,” they will be able to eat them in homeroom, and there will

be items available for $1. Everything is USDA approved. The kids can pay cash or use their accounts.

TOGETHER WE CAN…

Parent Teacher Association

Make A Difference Dear Parents, Grandparents, and Friends:

The beginning of the school year marks the beginning of another school year of opportunities and

challenges for the students of North Royalton Middle School. We all want to see our students become the

best they can be. We try to support them in many different ways throughout the school year. One of the

most important ways we can support and encourage our students is by becoming a PTA member. Your

$6.00 membership fee helps provide social activities and creative challenges for our students. Our PTA

volunteers chaperone socials, provide tutoring, and assist the staff in many different ways.

Please show your children that their education is important to you by joining the NRMS PTA. Fill out

the bottom portion of this sheet and enclose it and your $6.00 membership fee in an envelope marked

“PTA Membership”, and return it to the school via your child as soon as possible. Everyone is welcome

at our PTA meetings, but it is not necessary to attend the meetings in order to become a PTA member.

The meeting dates and times are as follows:

Tuesdays at 9:30 AM (All meetings will be held in the H.S. Community Room unless noted otherwise):
