Dear Parents/Guardians,

The year has flown by and it’s hard to believe this is our last newsletter of the year!

On behalf of the staff, I’d like to thank the PTA volunteers who treated us to a

wonderful Staff Appreciation week at NRMS The events were coordinated by

Maria Rowlette and Kathy Lineweaver and we couldn’t be more appreciative of the

generosity of the families. Additionally, I’d like to give a special thank you to Lynn

Dorman for doing an amazing job of leading the Middle School PTA over the past

two years. Her heart has always been focused in the direction of collaborating for the

benefit of the student environment and it’s been a pleasure to have been her partner

during my time as principal.

Spring benchmark assessments are taking place by team in the areas of reading and

math to evaluate student growth this year. With the addition of the PARCC and New

Generation assessments next year, we will continue to utilize benchmark assessments

as a diagnostic tool, but in the fall and winter periods only. As always, if you would

like more information about your student’s progress, please don’t hesitate to reach

out to his/her teacher for clarification.

This month our teachers participated in a full day of professional development on

May 6th that focused on two specific areas - safety and security and classroom

technology implementation. Teachers signed up for technology sessions facilitated

by fellow colleagues and administrators and were able to fine-tune skills to

incorporate more 21st century skills into the classroom experience for students.

Collaboration time for professional educators is a critical component to moving

student achievement forward. We are appreciative of opportunities like this to

coordinate curriculum with one another.

Our NRMS students have been shining in many different ways that I’d like to

recognize:

Eight students earned their way to the state level competition for Power of the

Pen – Kate Altany, Gracie Goodman, Allie Hrovat, Gerald Mastellone, Diya

Patel, Rachel Pavelich, Jordan Shifflet, and Kate Young. At last week’s state

finals, Kate Altany placed 4th in the state!!!

OMEA Contests resulted in a score of Superior for the 8th grade band and the

7th grade purple band, and scores of Excellent for 7

th grade gold band!

Our track teams had a great finish for the year in the NOCMSL Conference –

out of 12 teams our 7th grade girls finished fourth, 7

th grade boys finished

fifth, 8th grade girls finished fourth, and our 8

th grade boys finished first and

claimed the CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

Eight students were winners of the Marilyn Bianchi Playwriting Festival –

Dylan Sauders, Lauren Devney, Tommy Layhew, Joey Marousek, Colin

Rush, Rachel Roberts, Gracie Goodman, and Naman Shah.

Principal’s Message Continued

our 8th graders this month! I can’t say enough about what fine young ladies and gentlemen we were complimented on

everywhere we went around Washington D.C. North Royalton Middle School was represented well by Michael Gilbert,

Rachel Pavelich, Christian Robinson, and Robin Stewart as they laid the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

and as always, the students enjoyed the riverboat dinner dance on the second night of the trip. Also on the move this

month were the Polar Bear and Sun Bear teams to camp at the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Educational Center.

We feel so fortunate to be able to offer these opportunities to our students and greatly appreciate the staff chaperones that

leave their families to join us on these experiences.

Recognition efforts are in full swing as we settle down to wrap up the 2013-2014 school year. Seventh grade Bear and

Cub Awards were given out on May 19th and fifth and sixth graders will be recognized on June 3

rd. We will say goodbye

to our Class of 2018 on June 5th, treating them to an ice cream social that day (thank you PTA!) and officially promoting

them to high school that evening.

Finally, this year will bring wonderful years of service to a close for a few NRMS staff members. Teachers Diane

Prokopovich and Nadine Haberkorn, and para-professional Alice Wery will retire after dedicating many years to our

students. Additionally, I will head on to serve the district in a different capacity as Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

It has been such an honor to work with the adolescents of North Royalton and help shape their future during my time as

principal. Assistant Principal Jeff Cicerchi will take over the role as principal next year with a seamless transition. Jeff is

the most passionate person about middle level learning that I know and will be an amazing force for our students both

academically and socially.

I wish you all a wonderful summer filled with opportunities for making memories with your families - enjoy!

Fondly,

Melissa I. Vojta

PTA President’s Message

Well, the 2013-2014 school year is almost over! Only a few days left!! It’s hard to believe how quickly it went! As a

PTA unit we have accomplished a lot, always keeping the mission of PTA in mind: to promote the welfare of our kids,

and to develop between educators and the public such a united effort that secures for all children the highest advantages in

their education. Keeping this in mind, we have stuffed packets, organized the Welcome Back luncheon, handled picture

taking, created the memory book, edited the newsletter, put on a great Staff Appreciation luncheon, offered spirit wear,

put on two great talent shows, ran the Reflection contest, helped with the Tailgates, helped many teachers, and we are

about to help out with Field Day! We have also earned quite a bit of money through our fundraising, and as a result, are

purchasing several smart boards for the school! I don’t have the exact number yet, but we are donating $9500.00 for the

purchase of the smart boards. This purchase will be used to replace the old Epson boards with smart boards. None of this

could have been accomplished without the help of all of you!

Packet stuffing is Thursday, August 7th at 9:00 a.m. in the MS Cafeteria. We need as much help as possible! If you and

your kids can help out for a couple of hours, it would make all the difference. If you haven’t signed up already, please

email me and let me know that you can help.

Good luck to the 8th graders moving up to the High School! You and your parents will be missed!

It has been a pleasure to serve as your PTA President for the past two years. The NRMS PTA has much to be proud

of…we have wonderful volunteers and families, and have accomplished a lot over the past two years. Continue to serve

the students of NRMS! They appreciate all you do! I am passing my gavel to your new PTA President, Stephanie

Kostyack. You are in great hands!! Have a terrific summer!

North Royalton Middle School PTA Meeting Minutes May 20, 2014

Call to Order: Lynn Dorman, President 9:40 a.m.

Pledge and Welcome Lynn thanks the teachers and staff for providing breakfast for us.

SECRETARY’S REPORT – Mary Ellen Watrobski – April minutes were posted online, no changes or additions.

CORRESPONDING SECRETARY’S REPORT – Jen Porter – several notes to be passed around.

TREASURER’S REPORT – Sandy Mraz - Balance on hand: $25,829.57

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – Mrs. Vojta – Thank you to everyone, especially Kathy Lineweaver & Maria Rowlett for the Staff Appreciation week. Everything was

great. The candy bar was very popular. The staff loved the signs from the students.

We just returned from Washington, D.C. and it was a great trip. The students were great; we received compliments on

their behavior. We laid a wreath at Arlington. Several of the staff who have gone on the trip many times have said that

this was one of the best trips ever. We were able to have a Holocaust survivor speak to the 8th graders prior to the trip.

I’m so pleased with all of the opportunities we were able to offer the students.

We have two 5th grade teams at the CVEEC this week. We had the Bear and Cub Awards ceremony for the 7

th graders last

night, which was nice. It’s for the students who earn the award for three quarters in a row.

We finished OAA testing and next year we start the new PARCC assessments. Next year’s assessments will be mid Feb –

mid March. We have a building leadership team that helps work on setting up the testing process. Hopefully the new

testing will allow the rest of the school to maintain the normal schedule, because we’re not able to have all students

testing on computers at the same time.

The 8th grade promotion ceremony will be June 5

th at 6:30 p.m. I talked to Lynn and we’d like to have an ice cream social

on that day for the students, and I’ve asked PTA for some assistance with that. We also have Field Days, the Track awards

are today, and we have 5th and 6th grade Bear and Cub Awards ceremonies coming up.

Thank you for all of your help and support of me as Principal. I’m excited for my new position and look forward to still

working with parent and students.

Jeff Cicerchi will be the new Principal of NRMS; he is very passionate about middle learning.

Mr. Cicerchi: People are amazed by the help we get from our PTA, I’m looking forward to working with all of you next

year. I went to BW for middle level certification. I truly am middle level through & through. I am involved with the

Ohio Middle Level Association.

TEACHERS REPORT – Mrs. Haberkorn – Not much of a report, but I started out as a PTA rep my first year at NRMS

and today is my last meeting. Thank you for who you are and how much you help the school and the students succeed.

OFFICER’S REPORTS

PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Lynn Dorman-

Thanks to everyone who volunteered in any way this year. Thanks to Kathy & Maria for the great Staff Appreciation.

willing to help.

NRMS scholarships were awarded to Sara Berish and Alli Gurka. (Lynn reads thank you letter from Sara Berish)

Is anyone interested in chairing the Welcome Back Luncheon? I’m sending around a sign up for help.

Last month I talked about the possibility of using a newsletter company next year for our PTA Newsletter, and we have

approved it for next year.

Please track and turn in your volunteer hours.

Any receipts must be turned in for reimbursement by June 30, or it will be considered a donation.

Get newsletter items in to Becky by this Friday.

ahead and set the date.

Band a Rama starts at 7:00 p.m., not 6:00 as noted on the agenda.

We made $150 from the My Pizzetta fundraiser, and $147 from Heinen’s.

(Lynn hands out treats to the executive board as thank you’s)

Box Tops at any time this year.

VOLUNTEER HOURS – Karan Kyle – Please keep track of volunteer hours and send them in monthly.

NEW BUSINESS: Mrs. Vojta requested a donation for the Eighth grade ice cream social, their social had to be cancelled.

The Shake Shoppe will provide ice cream in individual portions. May I have a motion to spend $350 from the Socials

fund on ice cream? Lori Krzywicki made a motion, Tawny Zajc seconded, there was not further discussion, the motion

carried.

Classroom Supplements, which is our Goals needs to be voted on. We’ve spent $179.99 on Beats for the Jump-a-Thon,

and made a $100 donation to Joseph Krzywicki for his Nature Center project for Eagle Scout. Lynn asked if we can move

$279.99 from postage to bring Curriculum Supplements to $8,500. Jodi Heffke made a motion to move $279.99 from

Postage fund to Curriculum Supplements fund, Stephanie Kostyack seconded the motion, and there was no further

discussion, the motion carried. We have $1000 to be used for technology for a total of $9,500 to be donated for Classroom

Supplements. The school wishes to replace Epsom boards with new Smartboards, as the old Epsom boards are breaking

and cannot be shared. Mr. Nickel is working on getting a quote, but Lynn asks if we can make a motion to spend up to

$9,500 on Smartboards. Sue Werner made a motion to spend up to $9,500 on Smartboards, Kathy Lineweaver seconded

the motion, there was no further discussion, the motion carried.

Month. She was nominated by Shalam Medlea, Abbey Rowerstein and Destiny Williams.

Staff Appreciation 2014

The Middle School Staff Appreciation Luncheon was held on Wednesday, May 14th

. The staff

was treated to a baked potato bar, chili, pasta salad, and a huge salad bar. In addition, a candy

buffet was set up for staff to help themselves to “a little something sweet” to take with them

back to class. The day was a huge success, and we want to thank all those who participated.

Thank you to everyone who donated gift cards for the luncheon. Thanks to your generosity, we

were able to raffle off 3 or 4 gift card “arrangements” each lunch period.

Thank you to all the students who took time to make “thank you” posters to use as part of our

decorations. A special thank you to Mr. Zimlich and his students for also making us 30

awesome posters.

We also can’t forget to thank Mrs. Szabo and Mrs. Ashley in the main office for all their help

and guidance. Thank you for always being available to us, especially when we ask endless

questions.

Finally, a special thanks to all our helpers who helped make this event so successful: Lynn

TOGETHER WE CAN…

Parent Teacher Association

Make A Difference Dear Parents, Grandparents, and Friends:

The beginning of the school year marks the beginning of another school year of opportunities and

challenges for the students of North Royalton Middle School. We all want to see our students become the

best they can be. We try to support them in many different ways throughout the school year. One of the

most important ways we can support and encourage our students is by becoming a PTA member. Your

$6.00 membership fee helps provide social activities and creative challenges for our students. Our PTA

volunteers chaperone socials, provide tutoring, and assist the staff in many different ways.

Please show your children that their education is important to you by joining the NRMS PTA. Fill out

the bottom portion of this sheet and enclose it and your $6.00 membership fee in an envelope marked

“PTA Membership”, and return it to the school via your child as soon as possible. Everyone is welcome

at our PTA meetings, but it is not necessary to attend the meetings in order to become a PTA member.

The meeting dates and times are as follows:
