CTCYM 2016 Program Curriculum

INTRODUCTION WHY CURRICULUM? First of all thank you for volunteering to lead programming and thank you for taking the time to read this entire packet. This curriculum is the unifying force between all of the living centers. It is essential that you follow it. However it is also important that you understand your students and your living center so we want you to be able to adapt this curriculum to your circumstances. This packet is written for beginners and veterans alike so if it’s moving too slow be patient God is bringing new workers to the vineyard. If it’s moving too fast reach out to someone who can help. We are in this together! WHAT YOU’LL SEE. The curriculum is divided by days. If you are planning a July trip please delete Wednesday (but make note if you wish to use the graphic suggested for Worship and combine Wednesday & Thursday graphic ideas. You may choose to use paint pens that dry quickly for people to put the things they wish to give to Christ on the canvas. This will allow for the message to still flow for the week.) Master List If you follow this curriculum completely this list will get you everything you need. Before you buy everything, go through this packet and pick out what your living center will be doing and cross things off the list accordingly. Morning Devotional Mornings are tough. You need to be prepared to cover for the cooks if things are running long for them but also get the teams to the worksites on time. These are student led and should not be a surprise to them. Sunday night, during rotations, ask students if they want to be involved in devotions and worship and then take note of their names. Each night before devotion or worship, during dinner, remind the selected student(s) of their responsibility for the next morning and evening. The pages are designed to be read straight through, but if your student wishes to improvise or share from their own life, so be it - as long as the scripture is read. Morning Devotional can be done in a variety of ways: 1. You can meet in your worship space and have 1-2 opening songs, an opening prayer, then the devotional, a brief 2-3 minute message, then the scripture before ending with a prayer. 2. You can gather in the dining area and sit as Work Teams and selected students can tell the story, share a brief 2-3 minute message, and then end in prayer. 3. You can gather in the dining area, and a Work Team brings the morning devotion as one of the morning chores. You could have one person on the team open with prayer, one read the story, one share the brief message, one read the scripture, and one close with prayer. The main thing to remember – the Scripture is the theme scripture for the day, so end with the scripture so that it lingers in the mind as the last thing they hear…kind of like the last song you hear on the car stereo sticks in your head for half the day… Lunch Devotional

Please stress to your work team adults the importance of completing the lunch devotionals. Evening worship is built upon them. Lunchtime Devotionals are a way for the group to grow closer together. They invite the Team to share their faith with one another. Some may not be as talkative on Monday as later in the week. It is appropriate to honor that, yet gently invite all to share. For some, this may be the first time they have talked with people they may or may not know about their faith. It also is a time for the clients to join in and experience “a living witness/sacrifice.” Do not rush this time, and begin or end the time with the theme word and scripture for the day. Lunch Devotionals should be student led, so either devise a way for picking a different leader each day or leave it up to each team. Also, don’t forget to ask the living center leadership to do them as well. Activity We’ve included ideas for your living center but invite you to use creativity and adapt the activities for your students. Activity time builds a bond for the entire living center. Everyone should be included in activity time and it should vary each day so that all learning types and personality styles feel included during the week. One activity during the week, if available in your area is a swim night at a local pool. This allows much needed down time and relaxation for everyone during the middle of the week. Evening Worship This is another place where it is crucial to involve students. (They might pray, read scripture, share a personal story, sing, write a poem, do a short skit, dramatic reading, etc.) Go ahead and get them involved in the planning. We’ve included a suggested outline for worship and what a possible sermon might look like, but again as long as the scripture is read and the day’s theme is emphasized, feel free to adapt. Evening Worship should ALWAYS be a part of each day. It should begin AND end on time – careful not to make the nights too late, but allow for adequate time for getting ready for lights out and sleep for everyone. It is a time for the living center to begin to process together what this day has meant. It should include elements of celebration as well as serious reflection time. Each day should also give the living center participants a chance to respond in some way (time praying at the altar, some responsive activity during worship, etc.). Worship should be visual, auditory, and tactile – in order to reach all types of learners. Your living center should choose to have students involved in worship for they are the present AND future of the church. So invite them ahead of time to read scripture, say the prayer, help with singing, dramas, etc. A great way to remind them of what the day was about is to open worship with a Slide Show set to music (the theme song is excellent here because they hear it and by the end of the week, they know it) that shows pictures from the work sites. This helps churches who are on a variety of worksites see what each team is doing in service and sacrifice. It also reminds everyone why we are here – to serve. Then you may move into a time of prepared worship. Suggestions include: music, prayer, music, scripture, message (oversight of message falls under Programming – one suggestion: have each youth leader or pastor from the various churches represented in your living center take a night to share a brief message. Work out this detail in advance, assigning the night and scripture text to them. The message needs to be the best it can be to “cement” the purpose of the day.)

Communion (last night together) – You will need an Ordained Elder to bless the communion elements. That could be the pastor of your host church, or if you have a pastor in your living center. Be sure and make arrangements early in the week for the Elder to bless the elements. One suggestion for communion: Have them sit in teams in worship. After the Elder blesses the elements, have one adult from each team to come up and get a Hawaiian bread roll and a small cup of juice and take back for his/her team. Have teams spread out in the worship space and take communion together as a team, then share in a prayer time together as a team. This is the last thing they will do together as a team and has proved to be a very sacred and holy time – so do not rush this piece. music, response/meditative time, closing music. Closing music might be a slower pace to wind down the evening. “GREATER”

EVENING ACTIVITIES After everyone has moved into their “home” for the week, take the opportunity to help them begin to get to know one another. Play a few icebreaker games to start the evening. Here are a few suggestions: Hi My Name Is Plant several people in your crowd who have a one dollar bill, a gift card, or any prize of your liking. Tell everyone that they need to go around the room and introduce themselves to and learn the names of as many people as they can meet. They should share their name, church, grade and favorite flavor of ice cream. Have your "planted people" give the prize to the 6th person that introduces themselves to them and tell that person to give it away to the 6th person they meet. After everyone has sufficiently mixed around and it is time to stop, find out who has the prizes and announce that they get to keep them! Bill Exchange Give each person 10 play money bills. They are to try to win as many as possible from others by challenging them one on one doing one of three things:

1. Thumb wrestling 2. Rock, paper, scissors 3. Flipping a coin

Tell your name and grade and then challenge them. Winner gets a bill from the other person. Rules: You must accept any challenge Sudden death, no two out of three Challenger has to have a coin and is "heads" on the coin toss. Whomp’em Have everyone sit in a circle. Have each person give their name and make sure each name is clearly said so that all others can hear it. After going through the names once or even twice, have someone start in the middle by asking someone to call the name of someone in the room. The person in the middle proceeds to find the person and try to whomp'em with a pillow on their knee before that person can say both their name and someone else's name in the room (not from their church). If they get whomped before they can say their name and someone else's name, they are now "it". Also, if the person whose name is called fails to say both their name and another person's name, they will have to be it. The person who is in the middle takes the place of the person they whomp. This helps people learn each other's names and mixes everyone around with each other. Items needed: pillow

ROTATION After teams have been assigned then they will go through a rotation and visit with the Center Director, Program Director, Construction Coordinator and Cooks. This is the time for you to introduce yourself to the teams, get volunteers to help with worship, introduce encouragement bags or posters, etc.

SUNDAY “GREATER”

EVENING WORSHIP

This evening worship time sets the tone for the whole week. Worship is such an important process for the mission trip experience. This is one of the main ways you can advance the theme of the week. Take the time to set up your worship space. Include a special backdrop or altar décor that advances the theme. Some ideas include: use a pallet and stencil on it “Now What?” and place in front as a focal point, create a table cover with the theme on it and add the theme words of each day to it, put tools and candles on the altar table, get creative. Plan to have participants create something to take home with them to not only remember CTCYM 2016 but to carry forward the idea of “Now What?” and thinking of missional things they could do the other 51 weeks out of the year. Here are some suggestions: 1) if you use the pallet idea for a backdrop then let them each person make a small pallet weekly calendar with "Now What?" painted at the top and the have 7 boards that they create a Sunday - Saturday planner for Christian action when they get home, 2) create an envelope board with 12 envelopes on it (one for each month of the next year) have participant place ideas in each envelope of what they might do to reach out that month, 3) have participants create a canvas painting with the theme on them and add words, ideas for the rest of the year, etc. The objects can be placed in the worship space (see picture of previous year) and the creations can grow each evening as an act of worship. Whatever you come up, the idea is to give people something to take home and thing about the “Now What?” idea.

seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in

the Father and the Father is in me? The words I have spoken to you I don’t speak on my own. The

Father who dwells in me does his works. Trust me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father

is in me, or at least believe on account of the works themselves. I assure you that whoever

believes in me will do the works that I do. They will do even greater works than these because

I am going to the Father.”

Message: Theme –“Greater” Theme scripture – John 14:12

1. Do greater things than Jesus did? This claim seems daring. Sounds like Mission Impossible.

The difficulty evaporates when one realizes that these ‘greater works’ are still works of Jesus, now carried out from his position with the Father through his commissioned, faithful followers.

2. Jesus grants us this amazing power. How well are we using it? 3. The only way we will be able to do some of the things that will happen this week is through

Christ working in us and through us. 4. If we really believe John 14:12 then what could that mean as we go home and for the other 51

weeks each year.

Response Time – Set to Instrumental Music Invite each team to come forward, kneel at the altar and have the leadership team place their hands on them and pray over them. After all the work teams have been prayed over, have the leadership kneel and invite work team members lay hands on and have a work team adult pray over the team. Music – Suggestions 1. Our God (Chris Tomlin) 2. I Will Follow (Chris Tomlin) Benediction A Benediction is not a prayer but a blessing. You can use the UMYF Benediction and have the leader say one part and the group repeat back (May the Lord bless you and keep you, May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you, May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you His peace) or any other benediction that you think is appropriate.

MONDAY “SACRIFICE”

MORNING DEVOTIONAL

Opening Prayer (feel free to come up with your own) “Good morning God. We are thankful to be here this morning. Please guide our hearts and paths today that we may be safe but more importantly so that we may be in Your will.” Story The Band singer, Bryan Chapel, tells this story that happened in his hometown: Two brothers were playing on the sandbanks by the river. One ran after another up a large mound of sand. Unfortunately, the mound was not solid, and their weight caused them to sink in quickly. When the boys did not return home for dinner, the family and neighbors organized a search. They found the younger brother unconscious, with his head and shoulders sticking out above the sand. When they cleared the sand to his waist, he awakened. The searchers asked, "Where is your brother?" The child replied, "I’m standing on his shoulders." With the sacrifice of his own life, the older brother lifted the younger to safety. The tangible and sacrificial love of the older brother literally served as a foundation for the younger brother’s life. Message Jesus Christ is OUR foundation for life. Jesus sacrificed his life so that we would have life – eternal life, and we are called to “pick up our cross daily” and be a “living sacrifice” for others in this world. Philippians 2:4-5 states “Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interest of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.” On the Cross, Christ had you and me in mind. When Jesus prayed in the Upper Room with the disciples at the Last Supper, He prayed for all believers. “I ask (that you protect your people) not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who WILL believe in me through their word, that they may all be as one.”(John 17:20-21a)

As we begin our work week, we have already made some sacrifices for Christ. We are giving this

week to Jesus, we have left our creature comforts of home, and we begin making new friends with

our work team members whom we may not know. But know this…Jesus has already gone before

you, preparing the work site, the client, the neighborhood, the city and all those with whom you will

come in contact with. You have the opportunity today to be a living sacrifice and share the Good

News through you thoughts, words and actions.

What ONE thing could you sacrifice (give up) the rest of this summer in order that you might be a living sacrifice (volunteer to serve in some way) so others experience Christ’s love through you? Closing Prayer Suggest a word prayer, where each person adds one word to the prayer as you go around the circle. The Work Team Adults would begin and end the Prayer with: Suggested Beginning: “Heavenly Father, we ask this day that you…. (and begin the word prayer) Suggested Ending: “We give thanks to you for this team and the sacrifices we will make on your behalf today. Amen.”


EVENING ACTIVITY

MARSHMALLOW BASEBALL Pair up work teams to play on a team together. Have them play Baseball with a giant campfire marshmallow and a plastic bat. For the sake of time have each team bat once. If you get out you may save yourself by eating the marshmallow in play. If a player gets on 2nd they (and anyone on 3rd) may score if they eat the marshmallow in play.

HUNGER GAMES Everyone’s it so if you get tagged you sit down. If two people tag each other they both sit down. The last player standing wins.

Scripture John 15:1-17 1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vineyard keeper. 2 He removes any of my branches that don’t produce fruit, and he trims any branch that produces fruit so that it will produce even more fruit. 3 You are already trimmed because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. A branch can’t produce fruit by itself, but must remain in the vine. Likewise, you can’t produce fruit unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit. Without me, you can’t do anything. 6 If you don’t remain in me, you will be like a branch that is thrown out and dries up. Those branches are gathered up, thrown into a fire, and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified when you produce much fruit and in this way prove that you are my disciples. 9 “As the Father loved me, I too have loved you. Message Remain means to stay, to stay in place, to stay with a group of friends, to stay doing something important, to stay in Christ.

When we remain in Christ, He has promised to remain with us and then further that we will continue to grow into one of His Disciples that will impact others.

These verses remind us that Jesus has called each of us His friend, while some earthly friendships don’t remain; Christ has promised us as his friends that He will remain.

Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, Abraham and Lot, Ruth and Naomi, Jesus with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. These are people from the Bible who remained together and were friends through adversity, through times of trial, through LIFE they remained.

Which is easier to remain in Jesus or His word?

As you are doing work for a complete stranger this week, ask yourself how is this week helping me remain in Christ?

Prayer (feel free to come up with your own) Jesus, As we work today help us to feel your presence not only as our strength and as our almighty God but help us to see you as our best friend. Lord let the work we do for our clients remind us that we desire

to remain in you and you in us, help us to share this with everyone that we encounter this week. Lord I ask that you would use this week to help all of us remain in you.

What does this song tell us about the world? (if no one is saying anything… start by repeating the words of the song… “Everyone feels messed up… The world can tell us we are messed up… no one likes/loves me…my world is falling apart”)

What does this song tell us about Jesus? (“NO MATTER WHAT - HE LOVES US… HE will never leave us…He has already WON…JUST let Him hold you”)

What does this have to do with REMAINING in Christ or His word?

(“No what matter the world tells us, we are HIS and we are loved…He is enough for us we just need to TRUST him…His Cross has taken it all for us…we are not ever alone He is ALWAYS with us… even when we don’t know or don’t want Him there because we are mad about the “whatever”…)

“Remaining” in Christ (in a relationship with God) is work! The world around us points out when we “fail” and that we need to be perfect; even though it is not possible to be perfect. Our friends hurt us, we don’t make the team, we make a bad choice that messes up our whole world, and we feel that we have to do it all alone. But the thing to remember about God is that He is with us. He wants to help us.

For some of us this is the hardest part of REMAINING in the “vine”. We must trust that God is not going to leave us alone in our mess. We forget this in the midst of the storm. We forget that He is standing beside us with open arms waiting for us to turn and run into his embrace of grace and forgiveness. We forget that the cross made us righteous in God’s eyes.

Have you ever thought of Christ as your friend? Do you find it hard to think of the savior of the world as your friend?

What would you do for your best friend? What wouldn’t you do for your best friend? Would you die for them? That’s what Christ did for all of us. He chose to die for you and me so that NO MATTER WHAT we are all RIGHTEOUS in God’s eyes. We are therefore called to be the “best friend” another could have, so they can see Christ in us.

EVENING ACTIVITY

Random Acts of Kindness and Service Each team will be directed to complete random acts of kindness or service. You may choose to give each team up to $10.

Rules: 1. Be respectful and remember you represent Christ’s church.

2. You must interact with someone that you are serving. Share a “Random Act of Kindness” card

with them and tell them that this is an expression of God’s love for them.

3. Come back to the living center with a story of servanthood to share with the group.

4. Must be a good steward of your funds. Can be used to buy supplies to accomplish your kind

act but you don’t have to spend it at all if you don’t want to.

5. Get permission with an establishment to commit your act.

6. Must use all team members

Suggestions: 1. Write notes of encouragement to those who inspire you. Buy stamps and mail them.

2. Carry groceries to the car at the grocery store.

3. Put a note on bathroom mirrors in public restrooms that say, “You look amazing!”

4. Deliver popsicles or cold water at the park.

5. Wash car windows at a gas station

6. Write thank you notes to soldiers and mail them.

7. Hand out $1 gift cards at Sonic

8. Sing at the nursing home or deliver flowers.

9. Pick up litter at park or in a neighborhood

10. Buy snow cones for kids

11. Set up a free lemonade stand

Create some cards for the teams to pass out that said, “You have received a random act of kindness from youth of the United Methodist Central Texas Conference Youth in Mission. Pay it forward to someone else.”

Response Time The idea behind this response activity is to let go of what is keeping you from viewing Christ as your friend. On one side of the alter rail have the note cards and the pens on the other have the friendship bracelets. Open this time to personal prayer time, let people come up at get a notecard/pen and write something that is keeping them from the personal friendship of Christ. When they are done, have them bring it up and leave it at the cross and grab a friendship bracelet. The bracelet will serve as a daily reminder to embrace the overwhelming love and friend ship of Christ. Benediction

Every time we encounter Jesus our lives are changed, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. As you leave here tonight expect to be different and look for Christ in the people around you. Remember you are loved. Optional Story: Jesus, A Friend like No Other “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” one of our very older popular hymns that was written by the most unlikely of characters. Allow me to share the story: (Joseph Scriven was born in 1819 of prosperous parents in Banbridge, Ireland. He was a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. At the age of 25, he decided to leave his native country and migrate to Canada. His reasons for leaving his country seem to be two-fold: the religious influence of the Plymouth Brethren upon his life estranging him from his family, and his fiancée accidentally drowned in 1845, the night before they were to be married. The grief-stricken young man moved to Canada.

In 1855, he received news from Ireland of his mother being terribly ill. He wrote a poem to comfort his mother called "Pray Without Ceasing". It was later set to music and renamed by Charles Crozat Converse, becoming the hymn "Jesus “Joseph did not have any intentions nor dream that his poem would be for publication in the newspaper and later becoming a favorite hymn among the millions of Christians around the world.

About 1857 he moved near to Port Hope, Ontario where he again fell in love and was due to be married, but in August 1860 the young woman suddenly fell ill of pneumonia and died.

He then devoted the rest of his life to tutoring, preaching and helping others. In 1869 Scriven published a collection of 115 Hymns and other verses which did not include "What a friend". Someone who was so hurt and so sad can still find the humbling truth that Jesus is our friend )

MORNING DEVOTIONAL Scripture John 6:1-15 1 After this Jesus went across the Galilee Sea (that is, the Tiberias Sea). 2 A large crowd followed him, because they had seen the miraculous signs he had done among the sick. 3 Jesus went up a mountain and sat there with his disciples. 4 It was nearly time for Passover, the Jewish festival. 5 Jesus looked up and saw the large crowd coming toward him. He asked Philip, “Where will we buy food to feed these people?” 6 Jesus said this to test him, for he already knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip replied, “More than a half year’s salary[a] worth of food wouldn’t be enough for each person to have even a little bit.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said, 9 “A youth here has five barley loaves and two fish. Message Imagine a banquet hall. What is the lighting like? Is there soft music playing? Is the food all set out or is it covered with fancy silver, waiting to be revealed? Now imagine that this banquet hall is in heaven.

And seated at your table are some of the greats of history. Martin Luther, the leader of the protestant reformation. John Wesley the founder of Methodism and you! Martin Luther stands up to give a toast; he says “I saw the evil desires of men leading a church I loved. I saw how they mislead the people and I stood up to them. I translated the Bible into German and because of my work countless people throughout history have come to know the love of Jesus.” People cheer and applaud. John Wesley stands next. “In my day the church was inaccessible to common people. I preached in factories and fields. I broadened the entire church’s understanding of grace; not to mention because of God’s work through me the United Methodist Church exists, which has been home to millions throughout history. Now it’s your turn. What do you say? “Well, I didn’t cuss… much. Whenever I saw a religious picture on Instagram I ‘liked it’ and I occasionally went to church and gave, sometimes.” Well don’t sell yourself short. You’re here and that’s something! Today is all about amazement. The disciples and people were amazed by the miracle of feeding such a large crowd. We read the stories of great men and women of faith and we are amazed. However, the common thread is that each of them were ordinary people like you and me. They were amazing because they served an amazing God; the same God you and I serve today. So be amazed that people with limited construction expertise were accomplishing such great works. Be amazed that churches that hardly knew each other before this week were able to form unified teams to accomplish such amazing work. History gives us a lens to see the accomplishments of leaders of the past for what they are. But they, like you, were merely planting seeds. Prayer Heavenly Father, Sometimes our desire to do big things keeps us from doing anything. Help us to see the significance of our work this week. Help us to understand that this week is another one of your amazing miracles. In your amazing name we pray. Amen.

Opening Questions Has there ever been a time where Jesus came through for you in a big way? Do you see Jesus at work in providing for your basic needs? Message Leave it to a youth to come through for the church. There are 3 ways this miracle is generally interpreted. The first interpretation says Jesus multiplied the loaves and the fishes. The second states that the people Jesus fed had a small bite and it was enough to fill them. The third way says that more than likely people brought food for the journey but kept it hidden on account of the crowds. And that once they saw the young boy give what he had each person’s heart was softened and they began to share with one another. Study How have you traditionally interpreted this story? Do either of the other two speak to you at all? How we interpret this miracle is not as important as how we let it change us. The truth is there is value in each reading. Do you easily see the value in those that are different or tend to disagree with you? How has Jesus changed or even preserved your heart? If you’ve grown up in the church this may be harder to answer. Did the people understand who Jesus was / is? (verse 14)

Jesus still provided (whether He multiplied, filled or changed hearts) despite the fact that they didn’t “get it”. How does this affect the way you view missions? Activity Have everyone guess how much money the group has when totaled together. Once everyone has guessed, total up how much the group actually has. Was it more or less than your guess? Is anyone willing to give a little for the sake of doing some good?


EVENING ACTIVITY

Human Battleship Divide a room in half so that the two halves are not visible to each other if you are sitting on the ground. I use a row of tables with sleeping bags or sheets draped over them. Then I set another row of tables on edge atop the ones draped with sheets. Have the students divide into two teams and sit on either side of the divider being sure none of them are out of bounds or under the tables. Use a playground ball or two to go back and forth. If you get hit you’re out, if you move you’re out. It is best to have a timer and have the winner be the team with the most once time runs out. Dude Perfect Checkout the Youtube star “Dude Perfect”. Have the students try to recreate some of his stunts or have them come up with some safe ones of their own. Filming it is even better!

Response Time While the band or recorded music plays have students come and paint on the canvas something that symbolizes what they want Jesus to multiply in their lives and how they plan to give it to him. It could be words or pictures. Tell them it’s ok to cover each other’s work because the important thing is that we give it to God. If the band is playing, have them play for a while. Benediction Many people wait for signs and wonders. You are the sign and wonder for our clients. Never forget your capacity to do greater things because God has chosen and called you to them. Sleep well with that knowledge.

THURSDAY “FEARLESS”

Scripture John 6:16-24 16 When evening came, Jesus’ disciples went down to the lake. 17 They got into a boat and were crossing the lake to Capernaum. It was already getting dark and Jesus hadn’t come to them yet. 18 The water was getting rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When the wind had driven them out for about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the water. He was approaching the boat and they were afraid. 20 He said to them, “I Am. [a] Don’t be afraid.” 21 Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and just then the boat reached the land where they had been heading. Message Imagine that you’re the disciples. Well you are disciples but imagine that you were one of the first 12. Jesus scares the mess out of you by telling you to feed 5,000+ people, and then he pulls off some miracle in which he provides food for all of them. All the while He has you making sure the folks sit down and eat. Do you think the disciples knew they were going to be waiters when they signed up? Then after all is said and done he tells you to go out and collect the leftovers. So now after walking through all of these people to serve them you have to do it again only this time on your hands and knees picking pieces out of the grass and rocks. Now you bring the leftovers to Him and you as a group realize there is a basketful for each of you only you’re too tired and sore to get the object lesson. Finally it’s time to check into the spa and Jesus tells you to get in a boat and row while He goes off to pray. But… after a full night’s worth of rowing you see it, Jesus walking on water. No crowds, no Pharisees, just you and the other true believers. This is a big deal because people of this day would have understood Job 9:8 which says He alone stretches out the sky and treads on the waves of the sea. Jesus was reassuring them… again that He is indeed God’s son and the Father’s equal. So here we are at CTCYM 2016. And some of us are tired and some of us are sore. And still we can be sure that we do not work alone Jesus has again come to us to show us how to reach the shore. Prayer Mighty savior, You have called us to a week of hard work. Some of us have seen you in the hearts of our fellow missionaries and clients. But some of us are still waiting. Lord Open our eyes to see You today. Amen.

Opening Questions When you think about someone who is fearless what comes to mind? How often do you associate Jesus with being fearless? When you’re away from church does being a Christian give you strength or does it cause you anxiety? Message The disciples experienced both strength and anxiety. Any Christian life fully lived will have both as competing forces vie for our attention and devotion. There are hard questions and things will happen in this life that will challenge our faith. One of the hardest phrases for Christians to say but one of the most important for us to learn is “I don’t know”. The New Testament is full of courtroom language, and we are called to be witnesses. That means we share only what we know - How God is at work in our life. We only have the answers God has given us, but that is OK because we are also called to work together as a community. Study Questions Have you ever had a loved one go through something that your faith was not equipped to give answers to? How did you handle it? Has someone else ever had the experience to speak to a situation in your life? Can you explain? Why do we sometimes feel the need to have every answer? Closing Thought The truth is there is no Christian who has every answer. Sometimes the fearless thing to do is to speak to what you know. Sometimes the fearless thing to do is to admit we don’t know but that God loves us anyway. Activity This week we’ve been learning about God, faith, missions, and construction, but also about one another. Select one person from the group and have everyone share something they “know” or learned about that person. Then do the same thing for each person at your worksite. Prayer God, You know us better than anyone. Help us to be fearless, fearless enough to speak up when we know an answer and fearless enough to admit when we don’t and to seek wisdom in those times. Thank you for this week, our clients, adults and missionaries. Thank you God for your goodness, love and mercy. Amen.

FRIDAY “IMAGINE”

MORNING DEVOTIONAL

Give each work team a small card with two questions on it that their team should answer during lunch

devotions. They need to have a spokesperson to speak in worship the answers to these two

questions:

1. What has mission trip meant to your team?

2. What do you plan to do when you return home? Tell the Story or Show the Movie Clip Mr. Holland’s Opus is the story of a musician who really just wants to be a composer. Rather grudgingly, he takes a job teaching music at the local high school, supposing it will give him time to write music while providing an income for he and his wife. One of his students is a very serious red-headed girl who plays the clarinet terribly, even though she practices constantly. As Mr. Holland works with her to try to help, he learns that she is the youngest in a family where everyone excels – except her. Because she has tried so hard and failed, she considers herself a failure, too. One day she comes into the music classroom and tells Mr. Holland that she’s going to give it up and if he knows anyone who wants her clarinet, he can give it to them. As she walks away, Holland asks her, “Is it any fun?” With a shrug, she answers, “I wanted it to be.” “You know what we’ve been doing wrong, Miss Lang? We’ve been playing the notes on the page.” Confused, the girl asks, “Well what else is there is to play?” “There’s a lot more to music than notes on a page. Playing music is supposed to be fun. It’s about heart. It’s about feelings and moving people and something beautiful and being alive and it’s not about notes on a page. I could teach you notes on a page. I can’t teach you that other stuff.” He takes away her music and tells her to try it. She tries a time or two, each time coming to a point where her clarinet squawks and squeaks, and she starts to kick herself for her failure. “What do you like best about yourself?” he asks. With a shy smile she says, “My hair – my dad says it reminds him of a sunset.” “Play the sunset.” She closes her eyes, and she begins to play – really play, not just the notes, but the music. She is so amazed when she does the hard part perfectly that her eyes pop open and she stops. Mr. Holland shares her amazement and says, “Don’t stop!” And so, on she plays: eyes closed, head beginning to sway with the rhythm of it. And we know that this time, it’s fun. Message Mr. Holland put her focus on something in her that was bigger than just focusing on notes and she was able to do more. She was able to do exceedingly and abundantly more than she could have asked, or even imagined. She started playing music and not just notes on the page (although she was playing the same notes, it became something bigger, something grander.) We, too, as followers of Christ, have something in us that is bigger than we are. That is the Holy Spirit of God. And by His power, he wants to do exceedingly and abundantly more than we can ask, or even imagine. It’s not that we aren’t to play the notes on the page, but that we are to play so much more than that by God’s spirit. Let us play the grand and glorious music of the King of kings.

Today’s theme for the day is “Imagine.” As we finish this week, imagine who went before us to make this week possible. Imagine what we might be able to accomplish with Jesus as the cornerstone of our lives. Imagine all the things God can accomplish through us as we a join together as the body of Christ. Imagine what you and your church might be able to do when you get home. Imagine what the world might look like if all the followers of Christ began to reach out to help others not just one week but 52 weeks a year!

Scripture Glory to God, who is able to do far beyond all that we could ask or imagine by his power at work within us; glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus for all generations, forever and always. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 (CEB) Prayer Lord, We thank you for this week. We pray that it is just the beginning of a life of service to You and your people. Keep us safe and keep us focused. We will discover in these verses how each of God’s people can through God’s grace be a place God's great power is seen. 1. Although this is one prayer, it has two parts. How are the two parts of the prayer (14-19) and (20-21) different? 2. Ephesians 3:14-19 is an intercessory prayer. Circle the times the word ‘you’ is used. When is the last time you prayed for someone else? What did you ask God to do? 3. Ephesians 3:20-21 is quite different from the previous prayer. How would you describe this kind of prayer? Have you ever prayed this way before? Why or why not? 4. Where have you seen the power of God at work this week? 5. Imagine how God’s glory can be shown in us and future generations. COMIC BOOK HEROES Put a piece of paper with a super hero written on it onto the back of each person. When you say go, they must go around asking yes or no questions of other people trying to determine which super hero they are. SUPER HERO UNDER CONSTRUCTION Give each team the opportunity to create a superhero. They should select one person on their team to be their superhero. They need a name, a super power and how he or she became a superhero. They can use items from their luggage or you can supply items. Be sure to tell them that these need to be “church appropriate” super heroes. Have a superhero “fashion show.” God’s power is real and so much stronger than any superhero we can think of. Have the groups discuss:

1. What are some of the difference in superhero power and God’s power?

2. What about God’s character makes His power different from worldly power? MY SUPERHERO ABILITIES Give each team a set of supplies including paper, scissors, markers, glue, etc. Each person should create their own superhero emblem. Go around the group and have the team write on the emblem those abilities that person has that with God’s power in them they can use to serve God and the world.


EVENING WORSHIP

Have teams sit together since part of this service will be experienced together this makes the logistics work better. This service includes Holy Communion. You will need to make sure you have bread and juice. Since it is suggested that each team share in communion you will need a small plastic cup of juice for each team and for leadership. If there is not a United Methodist ordained Elder at your living center then you need to make prior arrangements for the pastor of your host church to come and preside over communion.

Amen. Work Team Responses Invite a spokesperson from each team to come forward and share their teams’ answers to the two questions. The team can come and stand with them, but only one will be the spokesperson.

Communion Invite a member of each team to come forward to get the communion elements for their team. Have each team find a place in the sanctuary to share together. Give directions about tearing off a piece of bread and giving it to the person on their right and saying, “The body of Christ, broken for you” and

offering the cup and saying, “The blood of Christ, shed for you.” Have each team close in prayer and return back to their seats. We fight darkness with His light. So now with that power go and serve again. Be sure to have each person take their remembrance of the week that they created this week with them. Encourage them to put it someone to remind them that they have 51 more weeks to serve God.
