Well I can really say summer is over as snow fell the weekend of August 21 in Calgary. I hope this is not a indi-

cation of the weather we might be getting this fall. Wow. Your executive took the summer off and did not have

national meetings over the two months but we as a group did complete the new Guidelines For Hosting A NA-

TIONAL SPECIALTY. I trust you all have in your email box a copy of these. Please read carefully as there are

many small changes with the thought process of making it more inviting and easier to host a national event. The

policies are also now on our website and in the members only section. We are seeking invitations to host the

2018 National. If you have any questions please write or call me.

Your 2016 national is moving forward with lots of behind the scenes planning. Check their FB page CSSA 2016

National. Your directors will give you a more detailed update after our Sept meeting.

Our newsletter is still a grave concern as far as funding and keeping it going with ads and reports and cost are

not balancing with revenue. I want to thank Sherrie for all the hard work. We might be forced to reduce our

number of annual issues, so again from the members what are your thoughts and ideas as a whole. A vote

came through to keep this but running it at a large loss is taxing our overall annual budget.

On the members’ side we again are staying the same and no growth yet. I know puppies are being bred and

sold Encourage your puppy buyers to look at joining. It’s important to carry this club forward as we are all get-

ting younger right.

It’s not all negative as we have a strong national club with a very engaging executive who all are taking part

and speaking up and being involved in the process of decisions in your region and nationally. You should be very

proud as am I, of the directors in place. We still need you the members to report to your director and share

your thoughts so they can be considered at our Executive meetings.

Thanks again for being a member and remember this is your club so write your director or myself and get in-

volved.

Glen Stark

Due to decreasing interest in advertising and the ever increasing cost of production, the Executive is considering

reducing publication of the newsletter to only three issues per year. If this is approved at Executive level, the

issues will be distributed as follows:

April 2016

August 2016

December 2016

Your executive may take these measures in order to best serve the CSSA Fanciers Inc. Membership in a fiscally

responsible manner.

On another note - the membership renewal form and new member application forms (2 pages) are included in

this issue. Renewal/New Member Applications are available online as well, at canadianshelties.ca

If your mailing address has changed, please advise us of the new address immediately. Re-mailing an issue due

to a bad address costs CSSA about $12.00 per item, and there is no guarantee there will be sufficient extras to

accommodate re-sending.

Lastly, all future ads/brags/covers must be submitted in vertical (portrait) format.

There was a CSSA MB summer meeting, puppy

party and barbeque in late July, at the home of

Sherrie and Cam Sparling. We at that time set

a date of October 4th for our next meeting, same

location.

Amberlyn Shelties Betty and Kim Sawatzky

We are so excited to announce our news from

the Manitoba Canine Association Dog Shows

held August 13th to the 16th.

Our young six and a half month old sable female

"Jordan" Amberlyn's Heaven Can Wait [out of

"Portia" Ch. Amberlyn's Three Wishes and sired

by Am.Ch. Ridgewood Lynphil Harry Winston]

finished her Championship in 4 shows.  Along

the way she also took a Best Puppy in Show.

At our WASSA Specialty "Jordan" took Runner

Up in Puppy Sweeps under Breeder Simone Ru-

dolph of Glamoor Shelties.

In the Specialty “Jordan” was Reserve Winners

Female under respected Judge Aramis "Joey"

Lim from Australia. Our young 14 month old

sable male   "Mikey" Amberlyn's Figure of

Speech, also out of "Portia" and sired by our

lovely bi-black male “Hush” Ch. Belmark's

Enough Said also finished his Championship.

Mikey took Best of Winners at our WASSA Spe-

cialty and then Best of Winners at the Manitoba

Working and Herding Association Specialty.

Not to be outdone our baby puppy "Focus" Am-

berlyn's Picture Perfect took Reserve Puppy in

our WASSA Specialty from the baby puppy

class.  She, too, did us proud.

We could not be more proud of our fur babies

and look forward to their future show career.

We also have some exciting news from the

whelping box! Sired by Ch Belmark’s Enough

Said ("Hush") out of our lovely Belmark Rhythm

Of My Heart. "Geisha presented us with a lovely

litter of four - 1 bi-black boy, 2 bi-blue girls, and

1 bi-black girl in the early hours of August 22nd.

We are anxious to watch these babies grow up!

Carlaine’s Shelties - Elaine and Carter Inkster

We are pleased to announce that “Taylor” [CH

Skyehaven On With The Show CD] earned 2 legs

towards her Rally Novice title at MCA this Au-

gust.

Padona Shelties  Paula Reid

Padona Something Bad aka “Flower” picked up

her first and second points at the Thunder Bay

Dog Show.

In the WASSA SPECIALTY “Flower” was Winners

Bitch and earned 4 more points. Many thanks to

her co- breeder Michelle Rogowski for handling

our little angel

Pat Marcus Thunder Bay, Ontario

My blue girl Tori finished her intermediate stan-

dard agility and earned her intermediate jump-

ers with weaves at the Agility Trials in Thunder

Bay in August. She will be Ch. Madselin Torrent

AgIS AgIJS RA HIC. We had a wonderful time.

What a dog!

Thank-you to everyone who sent me their news!

Yours in Shelties, Elaine

Director’s Report - MB/ON-N -Elaine Inkster

Director’s Report - SK - Donna Lewis It’s been a beautiful summer with lots of time for playing with our Shelties. There have been a few litters that I am sure we will see more of them out

and about soon.

The Saskatoon and Area Shetland sheepdog Association will be sponsoring a Booster for Shelties in Conformation, Obedience and Rally O at the Saska-

toon Kennel and Obedience club shows and trials in late August. We look forward to watching the Shelties strut their stuff in all venues.

Now some news from whelping box.

Donna Lewis- Donayne

We were please to have two litters this summer. GCH Borealis Lonestar PCD was bred to Donayne’s Stop Everything Now and gave us a litter of one

Tri boy and one BM girl.

Also Ch. Borealis Donayne Pizzaro RN CD SJATD was bred to Ch. Donayne’s Chantilly Lace and produced a litter of two boys, one Tri and one BM. Co

bred with Judith Hutton –Borealis Shelties.

We look forward to watching them grow.

That’s it for now. I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the warm fall weather, as we know soon it will change.

Donna

Ontario South has a booster this coming fall in conjunction with the Elgin County KC show. Booster date is Sunday Oct. 18 in London Ontario. Judge

will be Barbara Dempsey Alderman. Please come out and support. Show info can be found on Canuck Dogs or MJN Show Secretary.

The reason we choose Sunday is there is a sheltie specialty on the Saturday Oct 17 with (collies) hosted by the DCSSA and there judge will be Dana

Cline from the USA.

So 4 sets of points and lots of prizes and great friends. Hope to see all the shelties in the ring.

We have no brags coming my way again and I know lots of wins in performance and conformation over the summer so please let us know.

Director’s Report- BC - Joanne HoweWhere are the class dogs? It is really sad to see

the numbers drop so drastically at the shows this

year. Here on Vancouver Island we have been

seeing entries of only 1 to 3 class dogs at some

shows. Good thing for the CKC that many are

pursuing the Grand Championship or entries

would be even lower.

It has been an incredibly hot, dry summer here

on the West Coast and the forest fires have kept

many on edge. Keeping our Show and Perfor-

mance dogs hydrated and cool has been a chal-

lenge. Showing is not for the feint of heart when

temperatures creep towards the 40*C mark as it

did for some of the interior shows.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer

and as the month of August winds down that

everyone continues to enjoy our wonderful dogs.

Elsie-May Lang - Misty and I have been very

busy at the Golden Retriever Trial we go the last

leg of the  OTCH Excellent and at the Richmond

Trial we got the last points for the Masters

OTCHX.   I'm really proud of what we achieved.

CoastalView - Judy Tulloch

Hope everyone is having a nice summer and fun

at the shows.   We had a great Island Summer

Circuit this year.  Our  Bi Blue Beauty *Icy*

warded our* Beauty In Motion*. And to her

Awesome Handler * Melissa Cadieux* So proud

of her and how far she has come over this last 4

Hard to believe that our summer is nearing an

end and fall is past approaching . Here in Alberta

the weatherman tries to keep us” on our toes “-

we have had everything from intense heat to

torrential done pours of rain – to snow !! Ah yes

–a few days ago – there was “white stuff” on the

ground in several southern Alberta areas and of

course the mountains!!

Alberta Shelties have had several great opportu-

nities to hit the show ring this past summer-

whether it is conformation or performance –

congratulations to everyone on your success.

Most importantly , its great to see friends and

enjoy the fellowship of the dog show world .

Summer is a busy time for all of us – family ac-

tivities , holidays and shows – sometimes all

wrapped into one great time. I know a great

number of the Alberta Sheltie friends have had

great success with their dogs this past several

months ,as I had the pleasure of being at many

of the summer shows myself. Again , congratu-

lations to all – thank you to those who were able

to get their news to me for this newsletter.

Ch. Sephora’s Viva Glam Girl, CGN, RE, earned

her last leg for C.D. at the NACA show in June.

She was third in the Novice B class so I  am

pleased. We are now attempting RAE title. First

shows at Lloydminster.  Jeanne Bartosh

WillowGlyn - Yvonne Halkow

WillowGlyn Deja Blue was Best in Sweeps and

Winners Dog at the SSFC Specialty held in con-

junction with the NACA shows in early June.  He

also took a 4 point Best of Winners at the EK-

KOC in Calgary sitting him on the dreaded 9

points. He will be back out to finish once he

coats up again.

At the Grande Prairie shows at the end of June, I

entered Jett, GCH WillowGlyn La Force CGN, RN

in Novice Obedience and he did me proud by

taking 1st in class all 3 trials and now sports

a new CD title.   I also piloted Chloe, Prairiemist

Serenity, to collect Winners Bitch 4 times for her

first 8 points.

AKC saw Rosie, WillowGlyn Tea Rose, pick up

her first 6 points taking Winners Bitch once &

Best of Winners once.  At the EKC shows follow-

ing she picked up another 6 points taking Best

of Winners twice, to finish.Rosie is Jett's 4th

champion offspring to finish this year.

Prairiemist- Barb Selby

We have a couple of new  Champions at  Prairi-

emist - ChPrairiemist Xellent and Ch Prairiemist

Serenity.

Both these pups are sired byGCH Prairiemist

Epic Impact  who is currently  # 5 Sheltie ! We

have  2 more of his kids waiting  to  come out

and play.  They were co bred with Norma Jeanne

Pohl  and are out of CH Paray’s Style Ethics. He

has at least  7 Can Ch’s so far .

My grand daughters , Zoe and Savannah, have

stepped up to show  my dogs for me as  I am

still unable to do so myself. They have done a

wonderful job! I am doing great , just have to

have a little patience until I heal completely.

Friends and family have been so supportive

through this ordeal.

Leith - Norma Jeanne and Norm Pohl

Prairiemist Chai Latte Leith is pointed and on

her way – she just likes having “way to much

fun “in the ring! I’m beginning to see some com-

mon sense filtering through now !!We have a

new Champion – Ch. Leith’s NCIS

SpecialAgentGibbs,RN. – and one of his daugh-

ters, Leith’s Miss Congeniality is looking very

promising. Gr.Ch. Leith’s N’Sync at Prairiemist,

RN. has two legs towards his Intermediate Rally

title and is going to try his “paw” in Novice Obe-

dience! I haven’t been in that ring for awhile

myself- so it could be fun for all. I find Rally so

much more relaxing !

Before closing – I want to mention that the Na-

tional 2016 committee have been working very

hard at some fantastic fundraising !I’m offering

a booster at the BRCA Camrose fall show –

come out and support your breed! The commit-

tee chair person , Laura Thompson , will keep us

all in the loop as news unfolds about the 2016

National .

So until next time- Happy Fall everyone ,

For the Novice A Exhibitor

Today’s Obedience Exhibitors would like to welcome you to the world of Obedience Competition! Since you are here to-day, we can assume that you have caught the training bug, just like us. We also understand that not every Novice A com-petitor is lucky enough to have a friend or mentor to be there by their side for their first few times in the ring. We thoughtyou might appreciate some friendly advice and maybe answer a few questions for you.

First piece of advice –

Read the rules and regulations! This is your obedience bible. Know it. Understand it. Live it. You should have a copy ofthe regs when we handed you this sheet of paper. If not, ask one of the stewards. Anytime you have questions on therulebook, ask the obedience chair, a steward, catch a Judge between classes or ask an experienced exhibitor. If they don’tknow the answer, they will find someone who does. You can also e-mail the obedience rep in your Zone. The #1 rule thatyou will find in the rulebook: no food or toys in the ring. Check your pockets before going in. Don’t let forgetfulness ruin agood run through.

When do I check in and pick up my armband?

You may check in anytime after the end of the previous class, and anytime up until it is your turn in the ring. However, checking in about 10-15 minutes before the start of your class is pretty standard procedure.

My class doesn’t have a scheduled start time. It says, “to follow Open”. How do I figure the start time of myclass?

The judging schedule is based on judging 8 Novicedogs per hour. However, some classes move quickly, some more slow-ly. Also, some teams may not show up for their class. It’s always best to check on the class before yours about halfwaythrough to see how it is proceeding. You may also ask the table steward if the current class is running on schedule and ifthe Judge plans to take a lunch break between classes.

The class has started and I’m the first one in. How will I know what to do?

The Judge will always ask the first handler in the ring if they would like to see the heeling pattern. Say yes! You want to beprepared. If you are not the first team in, be sure to watch the Judge demonstrate the heeling pattern or make sure towatch one of the other entries in the ring. Also, the Judge will be very explicit in his or her instructions at all times. If youdon’t understand, or didn’t hear, let them know. They understand that this is your first time. They want you to succeed asmuch as you do!

I’m in the ring. Any advice?

Ask anyone, and they will say that the #1 thing a novice exhibitor (or even a seasoned one!) will forget to do is BREATHE!Just relax! This is supposed to be fun! Another big snare for a lot of people is their pace. If you normally walk at a briskpace while training, do so in the ring! Many dogs loose attention by their owners heeling at a snail’s pace when they nor-mally heel quite fast. This is a common handler error caused by your brain freezing up and time seeming to stand still. Al-so don’t forget to slow down noticeably when the Judge commands, “Slow,” and to speed up noticeably when the Judgecommands, “Fast.” This is the #1 area were points can get lost.

Are you ready?

The Judge will ask you this question before every exercise. Before you answer, take a deep breath, make sure that youand your dog are focused on each other, then reply that you are ready. Take your time. You paid for your five minutes inthe ring. Don’t rush yourself through it!

I survived! Now what?

Keep track of how your class progresses. When the last team is in the ring, a steward will start lining you up for the groupexercises, also known as the longest 1 and 3 minutes of your life. Try to look comfortable and at ease during this exercise.

Page 20: CSSA Fanciers Inc Volume 28 Issue 3 Fall 2015 - CSSA Online Home 2015 with covers.pdf · 2018-09-03 · August 2016 December 2016 Your executive may take these measures in order to

It will be hard, we know! Your dog will be looking to you for reassurance. If you stare at them and look fidgety, they willthink something is wrong and come over to reassure you that they are ok. If this happens, just remember that we have allbeen there! So try to act relaxed. This is your mantra: “My pooch knows this exercise and he will stay for me. I havenothing to worry about” Smile as you say this over and over in your mind J

One last bit of advice -

After the class is over and you have collected not only your green qualifying ribbon but also that coveted blue, go up andtalk to your Judge. Ask them where you lost points and were you could improve. They are always happy to talk with anexhibitor who wants to improve upon that day’s performance. If you don’t like what they have to say, just remember it’s on-ly one person’s opinion. But keep the information filed away. You may hear it repeated again someday and discover that itreally is an area to be worked on.

Also, don’t forget –

Check the score sheets after your class. They will be posted next to trophies in the obedience area. Keep track of yourscore, arm band number, Judge and day and place of the trial. It is a rare occurrence that a qualifying score doesn’t getcredited to the right person, but it does happen. A lot of paperwork flies around the day of a show. A score could get en-tered in the wrong column of the Judges book or the CKC may later overlook a qualifying run in a dogs showing record.

And be sure to check out the trophy table -

There are several trophies being awarded today that you may be eligible for. For example, there is a trophy being offeredfor highest scoring Terrier in regular classes. Did you show a Terrier? Did you get a qualifying score today? That trophymight be yours! Hang around for the end of the trial to see if you and your dog came out on top today! Trophies are occa-sionally offered that require the handler to register in order to win. Are you a senior handler or a junior handler? Theremay be a trophy waiting for you.

Any time you have questions during the show, please ask us.We are here to make sure that your day runs smoothly.

Good Luck! We know you will do well in the ring today!by Norma Hamilton

An Excellent Publication! At the CSSA MB meeting held in July, Manitoba member Jean Paterson brought this colouring book to share with us. Published by the American

Veterinary Medical Association in a bilingual (English and Spanish) format, this colouring book is an excellent educational resource for families

with children who either have a dog or who are exposed to dogs. Inside the covers are 24 page cartoon illustrations of children interacting with,

or in the presence of, dogs. While many of the captions may seem obvious to us, children who are not raised with dogs may not intuit correct

behaviour around our canine friends.

Jean also provided us with these links to share:
