Hello everyone…and I hope you are into full swing of snow-mobile season. I know that some of us powder hounds would like to see more, but if we keep up the snow dance…we might have a great February and March.
I would like to thank the White River Snowmobile Club in Meeker for putting on an awesome convention for first timers with a handful of members. The snow conditions were represen-tative with all areas in the state, leaving room for more snow, but we had a great time on the rides. Troy and Rhonda Hilkey headed up the array of volunteers locally, and from Craig to deal with all the activities including registration, banquet din-ner, breakfasts, and numerous rides over the three-day event. I heard there were 72 registered for the event. Thanks to all that attended and hosted the event.
Well this might be one of my last few articles in the Snow Scoop since this is my last year as President of CSA. My term will be up at the end of the fiscal year, on April 30 this year. I feel that CSA is in a great position both financially and as a viable organization to promote and preserve the sport of snowmobil-ing. I know that CSA will be in very capable hands with Scott Jones as the President Elect starting in May. Everyone should be very familiar with Scott with his outstanding achievements in land use and access for CSA and COHVCO. Scott will continue his passion in Land Use/Access while performing the duties of
President and I will be available to him at a phone call or stone’s throw away. I have accepted a position with COHVCO as a board member representing CSA, at the request of Scott Jones and the COHVCO Board. I would like to thank everyone in CSA for the privilege to lead CSA for the past four years, and the numerous words of encouragement by everyone that I have worked with in CSA. I will be giving up the position, but the friendships and commitment to CSA will last indefinitely. Thanks again, and we’ll see you on the snow!

Why is winter trail grooming important?
An important component of snowmobile rec-reation is the grooming of trail networks through-out the country that provide public access a wide range of winter recreational opportunities in the backcountry. For those that are not fa-miliar with these actions grooming is performed by snowcats, similar to those used by ski areas, which tow a wide range of equipment in order to provide a well maintained and identifiable route through the backcountry. This is an important resource for all users, but is valued for differ-ent reasons throughout the country and unlike summer motorized routes, winter routes must be built from scratch every year. In the Western United States, these routes are relied on to ac-cess high quality backcountry opportunities in large bowls and other areas. In the mid-west and northeast, the trail network is the recreational opportunity that is sought by users.
Traditional snowmobile recreational activi-ties based on the groomed trail network provide a significant economic driver to a wide range of local communities. In 2012, snowmobile recre-ation in the United States accounted for $34 bil-lion direct sales of units, clothing and related services which resulted in over 100,000 jobs to
a wide range of communities. Snowmobile rec-reation provides an important income bridge for many businesses who more directly target sum-mer recreation, but need to keep employees on the payroll over the winter. Snowmobile sales fills this niche. Many of the communities that significantly benefit from snowmobile recreation as an economic driver are smaller communities that have lost more traditional sources of rev-enue such as timber, mining and agriculture. This make snowmobile recreation a very impor-tant revenue stream to these communities and their ability to provide basic services like road maintenance and schools, and local communi-ties very interested in maintaining this activity.
At first glance, the groomed routes provided by the snowmobile community are mistakenly believed to benefit only the snowmobile users. While state based snowmobile registration pro-grams provide the overwhelming source of fund-ing for grooming, these groomed routes support a wide range of non-motorized activities, such as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fish-ing, hunters and dog mushing, free of charge. These activities that may not be directly related to snowmobiling but provide addition revenue
and jobs to local communities that are more traditionally identified as summer recreational activities. Many of these users and communi-ties would not be able to pursue these activities without the trail network provided by the snow-mobile community.
The groomed trail network further provides significant safety to all users. The trails and maps provide a uniformly identifiable naviga-tion system and waypoints for all users and access for emergency response teams to safe-ly access the winter backcountry to aid those members of the public that may have become injured or lost. The grooming equipment further provides the specialized equipment in many ar-eas for emergency responders to gain access to the backcountry and undertake rescue activi-ties in a timely manner.
Snowmobile recreation and associated grooming is a major benefit to local communi-ties and many user groups that are not directly associated with motorized recreation. A more complete understanding of these benefits is of-ten a critical component of any discussion that is addressing changes in grooming activities in any area.

February is here and our snow season is already half over. The snow has been a little on the scanty side this season, but hopefully every snow lover has found the time to make it out and play.
Our club has had quite a season this year. If you haven’t heard, we had a slight “mishap” with our groomer. As a club, we had to pool together our knowledge and resources to get the cat back on the trail. Two of our members spent most of a 35 below night stranded on the mountain with the groomer. Through this event, we, as a club have learned the importance of teamwork and communication.
Do not take for granted that just because you have a cell phone that this small piece of equipment can save your life. When you are in the mountains, cell service is spotty at best. Our groomer is equipped with a SPOT. This piece of equipment can let people know that you are “safe”, “in trouble”, or there is a “911” emergency. In this case, the groomer became stuck and inoperable, including no heat. The end re-sult is that everyone made it home safe and sound, and we have all realized what a valuable piece of tech-nology SPOT is.
Through a huge amount of teamwork and access-ing the local network of “helping hands” our groomer came down off the mountain, traveled to Grand Junc-tion for some repair, and is back grooming our trails.
We can’t thank enough all of the club members and others that helped us out. Axis Steele, Wagner out of Hayden, Prinoth, Anson Excavating, Greg Knez, Mike Bailey, Darren Zamzow, Mark Borbeau, Billy Dines and Mike Swinsick all from Steamboat Lake State Park, Steamboat Lake Snow Club, Scott Cook for his donation, Routt and Moffatt County Search and Rescue, and Classic Air Medical with their rescue helicopter. I am sure there are people that we have forgotten, but everyone that helped in any way is truly appreciated! On to other things. We held our annual avalanche training with good attendance! A lot of new information was shared with all who attended.
The NOWECOS Poker Run was also held this past weekend, January 31. Another successful year! Snow levels were a little less than we would have liked, but still had a great turnout and riders of all ages attend-ed. Our club members love to put on this event, a good time for everyone in the family! Shane Zimmer-man had the best hand of the day to claim 25 percent of the purse, while Karson Fedinec and Harold Brown also took home cash prizes. Prizes and awards were handed out at the O.P. in Craig, which provided a very good meal for all that attended. This is the event that provides local scholarships for graduating se-niors. Hopefully, we can have another good turn out next year!

Greetings from Grand Lake!It is snowing as I write this. It has been a long time in between storms here. We
have had a number of rides in late December and January. The Trees N Trails ride had about 10 riders who explored some of the side trails
and meadows. We had a few stucks, but everyone had a good time anyway. New Year’s Eve we rode up to Eagle’s Perch to watch the fireworks over Grand
Lake at midnight. It was somewhere in the range of -10° that night but 13 hardy snowmobilers rang in the New Year and enjoyed a clear view of the fireworks.
We followed that event with the Steak Ride. It was near Whiskey Park with 16 people in attendance. The steaks were delicious! Charles Stoyer manned the grill for us.
The first ever Ladies’ Ride was January 10. The idea behind this ride was to pro-ceed at a more leisurely pace and take frequent thumb breaks. Something a lot of us guys fail to do on a ride. We are looking to repeat this ride next season with more participants.
The Long Ride was on January 24 and 14 riders traveled from Grand Lake to Gould via the Illinois Pass Trail. I have to say now that I have never had a smoother ride over that pass. Kudos to the North Park and Grand Lake groomers for an excel-lent job! Debbie Mason drove over and brought a trailer for a “sag wagon” in case anyone had a sled problem or just couldn’t ride that far back. The ride is near 100 miles round trip. We enjoyed a tasty lunch at the Clark Peak Cabins by prior ar-rangement. Thank You Millie and Gerry! They also have premium fuel without etha-nol for any day trip riders who travel that way.
Tonight we will have our Moonlight Ride at Hatchet Park and enjoy brats and hot dogs. There will be a fire to hang out by and socialize. The moon may show up; we never know from year to year. The groomer will be there to give short demo rides and explain how they get the trails so smooth.
Upcoming events are the Poker Run on February 21, the Overnight Ride and the Yahoo Ride alternative.
The Poker Run will be a little different this year. We will have two causes to ben-efit instead of one. Flight for Life and the CSA Right to Ride fund. Some of the funds raised at the silent auction will be earmarked to go to Right to Ride to help support CSA’s efforts to keep our riding areas open. This ride is a joint effort organized by Mile Hi and Trail Blazers Snowmobile Clubs. Without both clubs, this event would not be the success it has been. Please come to Grand Lake on February 21 to have fun riding and support these worthy causes at the same time. Sign up begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday. There will be a Happy Hour get together at Gateway Inn on Friday and an after party at Pancho and Lefty’s Saturday evening. We still need more vol-unteers!
The Overnight Ride has been rescheduled to March 6-8 and will be at Steamboat Lake. We will be heading up on Friday and stop off at Rabbit Ears for a ride. Lodging is available at Hahn’s Peak Roadhouse, but you will need to sign up soon because they fill up this time of year. Call the Roadhouse at 970-879-4404 to reserve and then contact Sam and Judy Eberly to let them know you are coming or for more info about the ride. Be sure you mention Trail Blazers when you reserve. Contact: [email protected] , Sam at 316-655-3818 or Judy at 316-259-2503. This will be a couple friendly ride with great scenery and riding.
The Yahoo (alternate) Ride will be March 12-15 at Grand Mesa. Frank Stehlik is the contact person. His cell phone is 303-927-8732. He would appreciate to know if you are coming. Contact Alexander Lake Lodge for reservations. You can check it out at alexanderlakelodge.com. Great riding on the Mesa. Meals and gas are available.

Holy Cross Powder Hounds
Lance Trujillo
Hello Sledders, December was a solid month for us in
the Vail and Eagle valley as we received some good snow. But that was it; snow has been hard to come by since. With the 2015 World Ski Championship taking place in Vail and Beaver Creek during the first two weeks of February, I’m a little embar-rassed for all the tourists from all over the world visiting Colorado. Hopefully some of them will be trying snowmobiling for the first time and will learn how awesome this sport is. As I type this we are expecting a storm, but we could use several.
We had our first club ride in February and had a great time riding out of Yeo-men Park in Eagle. Fourteen riders joined in and made the trip exciting as we had all levels of riders. Our next ride will be planned for February...stay tuned.
The Powder Hounds are currently working hard to understand why the Vail Task Force and Forest Service are asking for more money at Vail Pass. While this is a very busy area, we feel that the current funds are not adequately used and that snowmobiling is not always represented as well as it should be. Parking lot plowing is sub-par; snowmobiling terrain has been taken away and many have complained of USFS workers skiing during the day. We would like to see concrete proof that ad-ditional dollars are needed. This is one of the only fee based areas in the state even though there are a few other locations that compare in volume of users.
On the bright side, the Powder Hounds have more members than we have seen in several years. I attribute this to many ex-isting members reaching out and bringing their friend to the club. Our SledFest party always seems to attract new Sled Heads as well. We are always looking for ways to get more members, but I think anyone read-ing this understands the difficulty in this. If you know someone with a sled, get them to register it and get them to join a club. Don’t forget you can also join other CSA clubs and will only pay the local club fee (minus the $22 CSA fee). You only need to join CSA once. I’m a member of a couple clubs myself.
Anybody that wants to try riding ter-rain in our area, check our website (www.holycrosspowderhounds.com) for rides and events. We welcome any new riders and you don’t have to be a member to ride with us. Most of the new riders that come along join the club. Have a great February and let it snow!

The Snow Country Explorers have been busy riding thanks to some good snow high up in the mountains. The first ride of the season was up to Bristol Head. A week lat-er we rode the Lake City trail system; they have some really great snow above Spring Creek Pass. Tomorrow we venture into the South Fork Powder Buster trail system: up to the top of Fox Mountain. It is currently snowing here in Creede, so the snow on the mountain should be great.
Highlights of some upcoming events in-clude a snowmobile ride to Love Lake and Copper Ridge on Friday, February 13, at 10 a.m. This ride is in conjunction with Creede Cabin Fever Daze. Events for the Daze will take place all weekend long (Fri-day-Saturday-Sunday). Everyone is invited to partake in any of the events. For infor-mation on what will take place, visit www.creede.com.
Another exciting event is the three-day ride on Black Mesa over February 23-24-25. Anyone interested in joining in with the club on this adventure can call Leslie Dustin at 719-658-0184 for more informa-tion.
Our last meeting was a terrific chili and stew dinner (complete with homemade biscuits) hosted be Ed and Nancy Knight. What a great meal and Ed and Nancy were terrific hosts. Dinner was followed by a business meeting where membership, a new snowcat, and upcoming events were discussed.
The next club meeting will be a dinner at Kip’s Grill on Thursday, February 19, at 6 p.m. All club members come out and en-joy dinner and support the club’s newest business member, Kip’s Grill.
All club events are posted on the CSA web site calendar and are open to every-one. For more information on the club or events, please call Leslie Dustin at 719-658-0184 or email [email protected].

FEBRUARY! It looks like we are at the halfway point of the snowmobiling and grooming season. Moth-er Nature has not been kind to our area. The snow has been on the shy side of good so far. We have had our groomers out on the Uncompahgre Plateau and Owl Creek a couple of times and only once on the Little Cimarron due to the lack of snow. (Dirt and rocks don’t do our groomer any good.)
The off-trail riding has been minimal because of rocks and stumps. (A-arms are expensive.) We are looking forward to a much better second half of the season.
Mark Hollingshead and I attended the CSA Annual meeting in Meeker hosted by the White River Snowmobile Club January 22-25. They did a wonderful job hosting the convention and the Town of Meeker and the Meeker Chamber of Commerce went all out to make us feel welcome and have a good time.
Troy Hilkey and his daughter Nicole lead us on a interesting ride on Yellow Jacket Pass on Sat. There were 26 riders on the ride and a lot of off trail riding. Every time we reached a stop-ping spot there were 10 riders and they had to go looking for 16. They must have felt like they were herding Cats. They got everyone back before dark so the ride was a success. Thanks for a wonderful time.
Next time I am sure there will be more, So long for now.

Raffle SummaryThank you to everyone for another successful year of selling raffle tickets and congratulations to all the clubs who
participated. A total of 7,830 tickets were sold this year resulting in a gross revenue of $39,710. We almost hit that $40,000 mark, maybe next year we can accomplish that goal. The net proceeds for the 50/50 split to the clubs was $1.71 per ticket sold by that club.
The drawing was held at Front Range Arctic Cat in Ft. Collins, Colorado on December 20, 2014. The M8000 was won by Kyle Marick from Ft. Morgan, Colorado. He purchased his winning ticket from the Colorado Blizzards at a raffle selling event at Sportsman’s Warehouse in Loveland. Kyle happened to be at Sportsman’s Warehouse again when we called to tell him he had won the sled. He came over to Front Range Arctic Cat in Ft. Collins right away to pick up the sled. The winner of the AR120 was Albert Villard from Craig, Colorado. He purchased in ticket from Northwest Colo-rado Snowmobile Club.
Below is a summary of the top eight clubs who sold the most tickets:1. Northwest Colorado Snowmobile Club – 1,500 tickets2. Western Slope/Snowskippers – 689 tickets3. Colorado Blizzards – 498 tickets4. Uncompahgre Valley Trail Riders – 401 tickets5. Delta Snowkrusers – 400 tickets6. North Fork Snowmobile Club – 389 tickets7. High Country Snowmobile Club – 361 tickets8. Mile High Snowmobile Club – 328 tickets
Thanks again to everyone who sold and/or purchased a ticket. The portion of the 50/50 that remains in the CSA raffle account pays for grooming insurance and the Royal Collard scholarship fund CSA sponsors every year.

Team Arctic proved that green is gold at the 2015 ESPN Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo., capturing two gold medals, a silver and one bronze, with outstanding performances by 17 athletes and crew members.
Tucker Hibbert kept his incredible win-streak alive, taking his eighth-consecutive gold medal after a dominant performance in snocross. Hibbert now has 13 overall medals in X Games competition dating back to his first appearance in 2000, at which he won his first of nine career gold med-als. Joining Hibbert in snocross competition were Team Arctic racers David Joanis, Logan Christian, Cody Thomsen and Mike Bauer.
Ryan Simons scored his first career gold medal when he delivered a commanding win in Hillcross competition, an event that combined elements of hill climb and snocross. His path to victory included competition from teammates Kyle Tapio, David McClure, Rob Kincaid, Nathan Zollinger, Trace Tupper and Taylor Meuwissen.
Cory Davis captured the most medals of any snowmobile athlete at this year’s X Games, with a Silver in Long Jump and a Bronze in Speed & Style. Willie Elam and Brett Turcotte were the other Team Arctic competitors in Speed & Style.
Jeff Tweet was a whisker from collecting a medal in Snocross Adaptive. He finished fourth overall, with teammate Chris Heppding taking sixth.
“Everyone at Arctic Cat is proud of the 17 athletes and crew members who made this the most successful X Games in recent memory,” said Mike Kloety, Team Arctic Race Manager. “It takes a huge effort to just make it to X Games. With millions of viewers watching from all over the world, Team Green gave an outstanding per-formance that brought medals and great com-petition.”
Team Arctic snocross and cross-country racers hit the bullseye at national events in Deadwood, SD, and Park Rapids, Minn., capturing more wins and more podiums than any other brand.
Team Green kept their leadership position intact at the ISOC snocross national in Deadwood, where they won 7 of 15 classes while notching 20 of 45 podium positions, the most of any brand. Tucker Hibbert delivered one of the most memorable performances in snocross history, coming from last place to win the Pro Open #2 final, his 100th career Pro National victory.
Other top Team Arctic performances include Dan Benham’s two wins in Sport; Trent Wittwer and Kaden Woodie swapping wins in the Amateur classes; Tyler Adams’s pair of seconds in Pro Lite; Eric Downs’s win in Jr. Novice and Brandon Nelson’s win in Transition.
While Team Green snocrossers were shooting them down in Deadwood, the cross-country corps stamped out any battle that might have occurred in Park Rapids, tak-ing 13 of 19 class victories and 37 of 56 podium positions, including eight podium sweeps.
For the first time in his short cross-country career, Wes Selby achieved victory in the hotly contested Pro Stock class, while his teammate Zach Herfindahl led a sweep of the Pro Open final. Team Arctic proved its depth and talent with eleven different class win-ners, including: Lance Efteland, Dylan Stevens, Todd Frischmon, Hunter Houle, Ean Voigt, Steve Martinson, Tyler Brown, Savannah Landrus and Keaton Black.
“Our racers and teams are truly exceptional,” said Mike Kloety. “This past weekend was historic on so many levels, from the number of wins and podium finishes, to the key victories that define careers. We couldn’t be more proud of our racers, or the snow-mobiles they ride.”
The next stop on the 2015 ISOC National schedule is Feb. 6-7 in Salamanca, NY. The next USXC cross-country Feb. 28 – March 1 in Thief River Falls, Minn. The Soo International 500 enduro begins this week, with the premier-class final on Feb. 6.

Polaris snocross racer Kody Kamm (Hentges Racing) won one of the most exciting Pro Open finals of the season during a Jan. 30-31 week-end of ISOC National racing in Deadwood, S.D., and Ross Martin (Judnick Motorsports) reached the Pro Open podium both nights.
Kamm was the top qualifier prior to the Fri-day night Pro Open final, but it was Martin who got the holeshot to show he would battle for the win. Kamm passed Martin for the lead at the end of the first lap, then series points leader Tucker Hibbert moved into second and pressed Kamm for the remaining 21 laps on the tight, technical course. Kamm countered every Hibbert passing attempt, retained his speed as he worked his way through traffic, and won his first final of the season. Martin finished third, and three fellow Polaris racers also finished in the top 10: Jus-tin Broberg (Hentges Racing) was eighth, Corin Todd (Leighton Motorsports) was ninth, and Jake Scott (Team LaVallee) finished 10th.
In Saturday night’s Pro Open final, six Polaris racers earned top-10 finishes and Martin and Kyle Pallin (Team LaVallee) reached the podi-um by finishing second and third, respectively. Justin Broberg (Hentges Racing) was fifth, Jake Scott (Team LaVallee) was seventh, Andrew Lie-ders (Team LaVallee), took eighth, and Corin Todd (Leighton Motorsports) finished 10th.
After the weekend’s racing, Pallin was second
in Pro Open points, Kamm was fourth, and Mar-tin was fifth. Broberg was ninth in points, Scott was 10th, and Todd was 11th.
PRo LiTE: A finAL Win & THE PoinTs LEAd Polaris racer Ryan Springer (Carlson Motor-

In the Pro-Am 30+ class, Scot Adams (Never Enough Racing) finished third, and in the Pro-Am Women’s final, Tonie Sledz (Sledz Racing) finished third and Amanda Duitsman (Plaist-ed Racing) was fourth. In the weekend’s two Sport-class finals, Jacob Yurk (Team Vermillion) earned a second, and Durk Roper (Roper Racing) reached the podium with a third-place finish.

Joe Parsons Earns Silver Medal on the Same Day He Switches to Ride Polaris
Polaris snowmobile freestyle rider Colten Moore combined acrobatic freestyle moves with speed on the race course to win the 2015 Winter X Games Snowmobile Speed & Style gold medal Thursday night in Aspen, Colorado. Moore, 25, won the fourth Winter X Games medal of his ca-reer as he outscored fellow Polaris rider Joe Par-sons in the final round of the Polaris-dominated event.
Three of the four semi-finalists were on Po-laris snowmobiles and it was an all-Polaris final
as Moore beat Parsons 90.62 to 83 and won the third X Games gold medal of his career in snow-mobile events.
Thursday was the first time Moore competed in Snowmobile Speed & Style. He has competed in the Winter X Games since 2010, winning gold in Snowmobile Freestyle (2012 and 2014) and earning the silver medal in Snowmobile Best Trick in 2012. Away from the snow, the 25-year-old Texan also competes in freestyle competition on Polaris off-road vehicles.
For Parsons, the silver medal was his fifth Winter X Games medal in Snowmobile Speed & Style, and his first medal ever won on a Polaris snowmobile. He has now earned 14 Winter X Games medals.
Parsons and Heath Frisby both switched to Polaris snowmobiles on Thursday, the day of the Snowmobile Speed & Style competition. Both were still adjusting to the superior performance of their Polaris sleds as they advanced into the quarter-finals.
Moore, Parsons, and X Games legend Levi La-Vallee were the Polaris riders to reach the semi-finals. Moore beat LaVallee 87.75 to 87 in one semi to advance to the final, and Parsons won his semi 84.67 to 83.33 over Cory Davis to ad-vance.
Polaris riders and racers will also compete in Snowmobile Long Jump, Snowmobile Hillcross, and Snowmobile Snocross during the 2015 X Games in Aspen.
