70 YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP IN INDIA'S INDUSTRIAL PROGRESS

Page 2: Csir Technologies

t*ntetooral

The founding fathers of CSIR envisioned CSIR to be an organization that will create technologies for the growth

of the Indian industry. At the time of India's independence, the nation's industrial infrastructure was in shambles

and required considerable building. CSIR was a partner in this national goal. Many industries took roots, both,

in public and private sectors based on pioneering initiatives of CSIR. The birth and growth of India's chemical,

agrochemical, generic drugs, petroleum, petrochemicals and engineering industries can be traced to specific

interventions of CSIR. The first organic chemical company (Hindustan Organic Chemicals ), the first

agrochemical company (Hindustan Insecticides Limited), the first generic drug manufacturing company

(CIPLA) and the first tractor manufacturing company (Punjab Tractors Limited) all owe their origins to CSIR.

Since the beginning of the nineties, when India began integrating into the global economy, in terms, of trade,

finance and business, CSIR redirected its energies to developing technologies that are globally competitive

and protected by non-infringing patents. A whole new set of industries (carbon fiber manufacturing, export

oriented speciality chemicals, technology for MSME's to enhance their competition globally) based on CSIR

knowhow, have emerged since then, catering to diverse sectors of the Indian economy and contributing to

wealth creation both within India and opening up new export markets for its products.

In the following pages, we document the most significant technologies that have emerged from the stables of

CSIR over the past seventy years which have made a commercial impact and brought great credibility to CSIR

as a trusted partner of Indian industries.

The aircraft has been designed by CSIR-NAL and Mahindra Aerospace Pvt. Ltd (MAPL). The all metal, fixed gear, provided by 10-540 Lycoming engine is powered by a 300 HP piston engine driving a 3-blade propeller cruising at a speed of 160 knots with a maximum AUW (All Up Weight) of 1525 kg. It is an ideal aircraft for air taxi, air ambulance, training, tourism and cargo.

The Maiden flight of prototype of CNM5 built by M/s Gipps Aero took place on September 1, 2011 which flew for 45 minutes was completely successful. The aircraft is now undergoing further flight trials.

The 30 m baseline Drishti model has been irrstallea at l.ucknow airport In November 2010.

Drishti Transmissometer for airport runway visibility

CSIR - NAL

It is a fast acting accurate instrument that automatically measures and reports the runway visual range and the metrological optical range. It facilitates automated measurements of runway visibility range RVR (0-3 km) and metrological optical range MOR (0-10 km). The Model II version of DRISHTI dispenses with the conventional chopper technology and incorporates electronic modulation of the lamp intensity. It is installed at different airports. This has lead to creation of indigenous capacity in the area of Aerospace.

Diabetic Footwear

CSIR - CLRI

CSIR-CLRI designed special footwear suitable for low-risk diabetic patients. A specially derived angle of slant has been provided in the sole to give the 'rocker' effect which is essentially used to offload pressure from the plantar surface of the feet. This would ensure that the patient does not experience areas of stress concentration in his underfoot and therefore he/she would not progress to the next stage of risk. The upper has been designed to take special care of fluctuations in foot volume and is provided with adjustable fasteners. The back is rigid with a counter stiffener for limiting joint mobility. The vital role of the footwear is very well described through the biomechanics of diabetic foot. The technology has been transferred to M/s MV Health Care and product has been named as 'Diastep'.

Recombinant Streptokinase (rSK) CSIRs second-generation clot buster

CSIR - IMTECH

After the introduction of natural streptokinase in the market in the year 2002, the CSIR-IMTECH team continued to work in this area and soon thereafter developed a facile process to manufacture a recombinant version of natural type streptokinase which is roughly ten times efficient as the natural SK production technology. This further lowered the price of the life-saver clot-buster drug. The most notable point regarding IMTECH's rSK production technology is that the yield per unit of culture-volume is several times higher than that for the natural system developed earlier. The product was launched for the Indian markets on July 10, 2009 under the brand name 'Lupiflo' being marketed by Lupin Chemicals Ltd. Shasun also continues to market this drug at wholesale/bulk mode to other market brands such as Piramal Healthcare.

Chiral switches - S.Amlodipine besylate and S-Pantoprazole

CSIR -NCL

Over the last ten to fifteen years drug chirality, particularly the use of single enantiomers versus racemic mixtures, has become an area of considerable interest. As a result of advances in the chemical technologies associated with the synthesis, separation and analysis of the individual enantiomers present in a racemate, together with regulatory requirements the number of chiral drugs presented for approval to regulatory authorities as single enantiomers rather than racemates has increased. These so-called Chiral Switches have resulted in a number of agents being commercially available as both single enantiomer and racemic mixtures at the same time. CSIR-NCL has developed two such chiral switches.

Gene 'D'cfer is a gene prediction software to determine gene candidates among all possible ORF's of a given DNA sequence by using a peptide library and an artificial neural network. Proteome calkulator is a powerful computational application developed for complete genome sequence analysis of model organism. It allows simultaneous study of several genomes by performing set theory operations like union, intersection, difference and inverse. The characteristic feature of the tool is that it carries out multiple analyses on a wide range of bacterial strains. Seapath is a unique software tool specially designed for the prediction of virulent proteins. It focuses on identifying adhesins or adhesin like proteins from newly sequenced genomes. It is capable of identifying potential targets (bacterial and viral surface antigens/adhesin) for new vaccine formulations and developing therapeutics against drug-resistant pathogens.

A unique software tool designed for the prediction of virulent proteins (Adhesins). MAAP: Malarial Adhesin species specific prediction software.

The Swing technology is a new concept altogether, whereby active ingredients, oils and oleoresins from fresh/dry spices are recovered without resorting to drying resulting in enhanced yield, lower cost of production and superior quality products. This technique has been employed in the spice oil and oleoresin technologies transferred by NIIST to 3 oleoresin companies.

Strategic Sector High density carbon carbon composites

CSIR - NPL

Carbon fibre reinforced carbon (c/c) composite is to-day one of the most important high temperature materials, finding many and varied applications especially in defence sector and therefore the technology for this material is not available to us at any cost. A scaled down nose tip was made with the carbon-carbon composites developed at NPL. This was tested at DRDL, Hyderabad using L.P. exhaust test and was found satisfactory.

C-band 60 W space TWT (with BEL) for ISRO's communication satellites.

CSIR - CEERI

Successfully designed and developed jointly with BEL. Desired RF and electrical specifications achieved over an extended frequency range with an output power more than 60 W, overall efficiency more than 55%, 'Quality assurance' (QA) of the C-band 60 W TWT has been initiated for space qualification.
