The Nick Palumbo Memorial Award ($50 Gift Certificatefrom Tilt’n Hilton) was presented by Nick’s daughters Sarah& Marissa to Corey Beaulieu of Sault Ste. Marie, for his low-ered 1971 Chevy C-10

Best in Show ($100 Esso Gas Card from Highway 17E Trad-ing Post) honours went to Fred Tucker of Sault Ste. Marie forhis 1963 Coupe Split Window Chevy Corvette.

The music was hot too, as Flathead Ford, sponsored by River-walk Condominiums, had people dancing in the street withtheir own classics from the 50’s and 60’s.

We caught up with Caroline Miller, one of the organizing vol-

unteers, who was eloquently grateful in her praise of theevent, its attendees, participants and of course, all of the vol-unteers who made it all happen. She told us “The SpecialEvents team is overwhelmed with the incredible generosity ofour sponsors who covered the costs of advertising, dashplaques and decals as well as the countless gifts and prizes. This event is 100% volunteer operated. We would like tothank each and every person and business for their contribu-tion, big or small. The Village was bustling and had a realcheery vibe.” she beamed.

We think we can definitely agree with her on that!

Fiddlehead Soup Serves Up a TastyMusical Treat.

EASTERN ONTARIO FOLK TRIO FIDDLEHEAD SOUPbrings their eclectic collection of music to Richards Landingon Tuesday August 2nd as part of the ‘Just PassingThrough’ concert series.

The trio joined forces in 2013 when three members of a celticceilidh band got together to learn some songs outside of thetraditional celtic fare – creating a unique sound.

Intrigued by the odd rhythms of Scandinavia and other tra-ditional music and fascinated by the tones and intricacies ofdifferent languages, the trio quickly amassed a set of eclectictracks in 9 different languages and spanning several cen-turies. The trio also began writing their own music, drawinginspiration from events happening around them.

The Lions’ Den Rolls Out the RedCarpet – For You!

The St. Joseph Island Lions’ Club invites new members. If youhave a little time and a lot of enthusiasm, the Club invites youto help make the Island community the best it can be.Lions orchestrate a variety of fundraising events that includepancake breakfasts, arts festivals, and are involved in commu-nity nights. Events that would benefit from new members’ in-volvement. These activities are largely fun times but alsoinclude highway clean-up and Pet Cemetery maintenance. Youcould even be appointed Vice President in charge of corn pop-ping at events if you wish! Opportunities galore await you.

Who we are and what we do.

Lions’ Clubs International comprise the world’s largest serviceclub organization and celebrate the motto “We serve” in everycommunity where they’re established. The St. Joseph IslandLions’ Club is one of 46,000 clubs, located in over 200 coun-tries, that represent over 1.3 million members. Meetings areheld once a month to keep tabs on activities, occasionally to hear a guest speaker, and receive newsabout international counterparts. There is also an optionalmonthly social gathering.

Best part – all public donations – 100% – go to a varietyof charities and bursaries. The St. Joseph Island Lions are par-ticularly proud to participate in the annual Purina Walk forDog Guides. It raises several thousand dollars each year and100% of those donations are sent to The Lions FoundationCanada Dog Guides Training Centre in Oakville.

We could do more….we would like to do more…..so we needmore volunteers. Please consider joining the Lions tomake the Island an even better place to call home.

WELL, FOR A THIRD YEAR IN A ROW, the Teddy Bear pic-nic was a soggy one. The morning started out with a hugedownpour; not the thing anyone likes to see when hosting anoutdoor event. Eventually the rain ceased, but the skies were adeep grey, the temperature a little cooler but still humid. Itlooked like at any moment there could have been a down-pour but thankfully for 3 hours we were spared.

Lots of brave children and their parents arrived and enjoyedthe activities we had planned for them. Just as the afternoonwas coming to a close, the rain decided to join us as well.

In our haste of packing up as the rains came, I did try tothank all those who helped, however I would like to repeatthis in case it was missed. It takes a lot of volunteers to havean event, especially the picnic. There are lots of activities thattake extra manpower, so I do like our volunteers to know justhow much they are appreciated.

Thank you to the board members and volunteers who helpedout with the various activities. The museum’s three summerstudents who helped with the prep leading up to the eventand then also the cleanup after. Emma from the children’s li-brary who helped out with story time, The St. Joseph Town-ship Fire Department for bringing their firetrucks andSparky along. Aardvark, great show as always, Parks Canadafor bringing some fun activities and finally a big thank you toall of the children and parents who decided to take a chanceon the weather and come to the museum.

In other museum news, something new this year we areworking on is the Artifact of the week. Each week we exam-ine the many artifacts here and as a group we collectively de-cide which item to devote some time to research. This hasbeen a fascinating little activity and we have learned so muchalready. So next time you visit the museum, be sure to see theitem of the week.
